Some help with WoW? (in Off-topic)

SimplyNic December 28 2008 1:34 PM EST

Yea I'm starting a new rogue. Just need some help on how to put the guy together. talent/skill wise that is.

Also could use some help with leather working x,x. Don't really get how it works

Rawr December 28 2008 1:39 PM EST

Leatherworking requires the skinning gathering profession. You skin the animals you find throughout the game and use them, sometimes with thread, to craft leather armor to fit your character (or others).

For rogues, the combat talent tree was the preferred leveling spec. This was during the Burning Crusade, but I doubt much has changed. If it has changed, someone correct me. Or you can troll the WoW forums, but that may take longer :P. Combat Swords was the specific specialization, which allowed for a chance for double hits with swords. This was the key talent points which made combat the best raiding spec and leveling spec. I believe there was a joke that you may get carpel tunnel from spamming one button (sinister strike) with combat O.o

I hope this helps, good luck.

Nah I understand how to get the leather, I just don't know how to make items and such >,<

[RX3]Cotillion December 28 2008 2:08 PM EST

You just open up the leatherworking page and select which item you want to make. If you have enough materials then it'll say a number next to the item. The number is how many items you can make with the material that you have.

Ooooohh okay cool :D Thanks.

Lol. I was going to find my Rogue build in about 10 hours so I can put it back how it was. I haven't logged in recently and I think there was a compulsory respec, so it's all lost. Got Lich King yesterday...

Combat Rogues are fun, but you so spam the same stuff all the time. And Death tends to happen if you fight too many enemies at the same time.

When i had a rog, this was awhile ago, lvl 60 max, i went combat aswell, for trade skills i went mining / herbalism, which turned out to be very effective since you can find both most anywhere.

i sold the herbs / ore at the auction house, smelting was a good idea sometimes, sometimes wasnt just check the prices on the ore versus bars to be sure.

God Bless you!

Jesus Loves you!

Anyway, with Rogues, Herbalism and Alchemy are the best bet, as it gives you a way to heal yourself, which is otherwise impossible (and it helps a lot).

Goodfish December 29 2008 5:11 AM EST

First Aid (arguably) gives you a way of healing yourself as well... although personally I only find First Aid useful in instances and PvP.

Alch/Herb is great PvE if you're Rogue, though, I'll attest to that. Herb/Mining is great if you want loads of cash, and is a very safe bet for a first character (create a cash cow, then twink the crap out of your next character).

LW/Skinning is also a possibility but I never really recommend creation professions for "new players". Gathering is much easier, much less expensive, and much less of a headache. Making 14k gold off of herbs and ores in a couple weeks (at high levels) basically means you can buy anything you want anyways.

Ultimately, I'd recommend Herbalism/Mining if you're a bit lazy, or Herbalism/Alchemy if you are active and don't mind a bit of tedium leveling up Alchemy.

My trial character was a Ranger, I used Skinning and Leatherworking as professions and I managed to max both (at 100 for trial accounts) in less than a day's worth of playing. (which was 4-6 hours I think)

If I could have continued beyond 100 I'm sure I would have been able to reach 200 on day 2 even. Made me a bit of money in the beginning but other professions might be better.

on my rog, i used bandages inbetween fights, worked out pretty good, they upgrade in healing power a lot as you get better materials to make bandages with.

using herbalism / mining, i always had a lot of cash to buy the cloth for bandages and any other gear i needed.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] December 29 2008 2:42 PM EST

don't overlook cooking either, it can give some nice buffs at the upper end of the scale and if you level it up as ya go it can cost little or just saving up the meat for cooking and cloth for bandages as you level and do it when ya get maxed or bored.

as far as saving stuff and making your life easier, set up a mule character (one that you do not play but just to hold things) and park it near the mailbox and bank in one of the big cities. if you get it near an auction as well, then you can just mail all of the stuff that you get from your main to your mule and use the mule to store and list it in the auction house.

Cooking and Fishing are staples for all of my characters, although they also involve a bit of tedium in leveling them up (Cooking much moreso than Fishing). Fishing is a fantastic way of getting some nice ingredients (both for Cooking, of course, but also for Alchemy). I also find the minigame kind of fun and relaxing after grinding mobs all day. :)

First Aid is a toss-up. I've never found it useful, personally, since I almost always go Cooking which has perfectly good healing items anyways. First Aid, like I said, is best in Battlegrounds and other "fast" areas (instances as well). Some players swear by it, but I'm not one of them...

BootyGod December 29 2008 6:59 PM EST

Serious players expect you to have maxed first aid. There is zero reason to NOT have it, so have it. Sure, 98% of the time, it won't be used. But when you die in the 2% of the time it would have, your group mates are going to let you know.

Goodfish December 29 2008 11:31 PM EST

Maybe at high levels (or in instances)... but generally, I find it more profitable to simply sell the cloth I get (unless I have tailoring... which I usually avoid anyways). If you need bandages, then keep a stack or two handy (and thusly make sure your First Aid is sufficiently leveled), but you hardly need to go overboard...

Nick, if this is your first character, starting out I'd recommend getting 2 of the gathering professions (skinning, mining or herbalism) and sell anything you gather in the Auction House. Money is horribly hard to come by for low level players. Once you have a nice bankroll stashed away you can drop one of the gathering professions and pick one of the crafting professions (leather working, alchemy, engineering or jewel crafting) and be much better equipped to advance those professions.

Also, don't throw anything away or pass up any loot. Carry it all back to a vendor and sell it, those few copper here and there for the low level grey stuff really add up in the long run.

"Money is horribly hard to come by for low level players"

Rofl not really :P. Level 16 and I already have about 10 gold xD. Yay for money hording and selling everything that's not important and/or useful.

Aside from that, thanks for the advice everyone! Appreciate it :)
