Vanguard Saga of Heroes: worth the clams? (in Off-topic)

Since I've come to realize WoW is nothing but a terrible fanboi game, I've decided to move on to a different MMORPG. However, I'm having a tough time deciding.

One that sticks out to me in the past few months I've been looking is Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. However, I can't really find any reputable reviews of it, nor can I find any compelling screenshots (item screenshots are usually the most important to me). The game SOUNDS really interesting and refreshing, but who knows- it might be a WoW clone with boats.

So has anybody played the game?

Also slightly related, has anybody played another enjoyable MMORPG besides WoW? I've heard plenty of great stuff about Warhammer Online but frankly I doubt my computer can handle it. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

If you dont mine retro graphics, give Diablo 2 a try, it is pretty fun, the classes are cool, solo / group play are both possible. Its also free online after you buy the CD.

God Bless you!

Jesus Loves you!

I've beaten D2 to hell. I even mod it. ;)

I've played a ton of free MMOs, and to tell you the truth, most of them are horrible. Don't be quick to turn down WoW, the truth is most games are trying to be WoW and you'll see the similarities when you try them.

Personally, the whole hardcore community of WoW is what is a turn off for me, but the mechanics are pretty good. Personally, I've probably loved free RO severs the most. Many of them are kinda silly (especially the high rate ones) but do some searching and you might find one that's right for you. The classes are versatile and the attribute system is create for customizing your character. Also worth noting is the vast amount of info about the game in the net that allows you to strategize unique builds much like we do in CB.

I've tried Flyff, DOMO, RF online (something like that) and a few others if you want to know about them.

I've played a lot of them.

They ALL have problems.

City of Heroes is a brilliant game, I love it to bits. I don't know if I'm ever going to play it again, though. The game can get hard to solo and the 'story' has no draw whatsoever. This means the only draw comes from wanting to play as a superhero and save people, which I already do in PnP RPGs...

Guild Wars is great. I love that a lot, and still play it regularly, even with active accounts for other MMOs. It has it's drawbacks, though. Getting the high-end stuff requires a crazy amount of repetitive play, for example. The story is really good, though. Rare for an MMO.

I have a friend who swear by lotro, but I can't really speak for it.

Anyway, I just went back to WoW yesterday and I've been having fun thus far. But I can see myself getting bored with it again fairly soon :P

i have heard that vanguard is a grindfest, much like the original everquest. that is hearsay though so take it for what it is worth.

i am really impressed with warhammer, it does have some pretty good ways to step down performance for older computers. i love the direction that the devs are headed in as well as their quick response, good understanding of their own mechanics and willingness to listen to players in an intelligent manner.

i will see if i can find a buddy code of some sort to send ya for it so you can try it before you buy it. just pm me an email address if you are interested and i will look through my stuff.

i like it. it does however compare to WoW but unlike WoW its entirely free.

dudemus: I've heard that Vanguard has really gotten a lot better since October, but no doubt it's still a grindfest.

I really want to play WHO, but I simply don't think my computer can run it. If I gave you my system specs would you be able to tell if I could or not?

Also, is there a "referral bonus" like there is in WoW? I referred my brother and we both got triple experience for three months, which made leveling a lot less of a grindfest.

Vanguard is basically WoW with a tiny facelift. It sucks.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] December 31 2008 6:45 PM EST

i have no idea regarding the bonuses, but the level cap is 40 and to hit level 20 is easy. i would add though that if you think wow is a grind, the everquest type grindfest is going to really get you down.

wow is quite easy to level in compared to the previous generation of mmorpgs.

as far as the specs go, i really do not know what it would take, but they may have it on the www.mythicentertainment.com web site. i have 3 referrals though and will get more the longer i play, so if you are willing to download i don't mind ya using one of them, i probably use one a year for situations such as this.

i did check and they need your first name, email address, destruction or order, and which server you want on, in case ya have friends playing. so if ya want to try it send me a pm with that info. i do not feel that it is that much difference in system requirements than wow with burning crusade, or performance difference for that matter on my current system. i have not tried lich king though but if you were playing lich king even with graphics on low i would think you would be okay.
