Chat rules (in General)

PearsonTritonRaveshaw January 20 2009 3:14 AM EST

I know I've requested this before, but I would like to see a list of chat rules. Just saying "stay PG" isn't enough. That is open to a considerable amount of interpretation to everybody, and the definition of PG to one person is more than likely very different than someone else's.

The last time I requested this I was told that it's just too easy to bypass rules by being clever, but what I mean when I ask for rules is just a set of guidelines for both chatters and administrators. Nothing has to be set in stone. It's just too easy to say "PG!" and shrug it off when someone gets kicked because they misinterpreted the single and only rule of chat.

Well, as far as I'm concerned... if what you said could be a line in a steamy "romance" novel, then it's more than likely not PG.

PearsonTritonRaveshaw January 20 2009 3:21 AM EST

Hacky pie, this thread has nothing to do with what recently happened in chat. I'm simply asking for a set of rules to guide people as to what's appropriate in chat.

three4thsforsaken January 20 2009 3:21 AM EST

somehow I doubt it's that simple

QBOddBird January 20 2009 3:22 AM EST

From the Official FAQ:

"# Q: Will you post a specific list of all non-PG terms and inappropriate acts?

A: No. New players and borderline cases will be given warnings before disciplinary action.

Use some common sense, people. If we had such a list, we would have to constantly be updating it or people would use "but it's not on the list" as an excuse. We don't admin this game because we enjoy being the police. Just respect other players and you'll be fine. Is that too much to ask?"

Hakai [Aye Phelta Thi] January 20 2009 3:24 AM EST

That's fine. But the problem with doing something like that is, if (and of course they will, no one can think of EVERYTHING) someone forgets to add something in the rules, it will be abused. Then when we kick them for it, they'll scream, "But it's not in the rules" or "Show me where it says I can't say ____ in the rules"!

Then we're right back here in forums.

PearsonTritonRaveshaw January 20 2009 3:27 AM EST

To me, that is a set in stone form of rules. When I ask for chat rules, I just want something as a guide while common sense still remains a factor.

That'll be 'stay pg' then...sounds like a guideline to me.

QBOddBird January 20 2009 3:31 AM EST

Check the Wiki.

Chat FAQ contains a simple set of guidelines. This is what you were looking for, right?

I do believe in the use of common sense as opposed to cuthroat use of rules

PearsonTritonRaveshaw January 20 2009 3:34 AM EST

That is mostly a common sense "yeah everybody knows that" set of rules. I'd really like to see more of a "You cannot harass other players This here, is considered harassing another player, and this is not. (Gives two examples for both)

How long have you been playing?

Sickone January 20 2009 3:54 AM EST

Translation : "I feel like I'm being unnecessarily persecuted by the mods and would like to get an enforced ceasefire on the basis of clear-cut rules which I intend to push but not overstep".

Face it, Rave, you're pretty much the only person complaining about the way the only chat rule is enforced.
I gave you the benefit of doubt in the past, but... I'm starting to lean on the other side.
Yes, some mods might still hold a grudge, but they're only human. I am absolutely sure that if you wouldn't try to push the limits and apologized nicely a couple of times, you wouldn't have problems anymore.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 20 2009 9:28 AM EST

it has truly been years since i have been in chat, do they fine you for these infractions or do you just have "alone time" for a bit?

A Lesser AR of 15 [Red Permanent Assurance] January 20 2009 9:44 AM EST

Would be nice to see the number of kicks and kills this year.

{cb2}ShadeSlayer January 20 2009 10:00 AM EST

Here are some rules to go by... lol

1. Admins and Ops are always right.
2. If they are wrong refer back to Rule 1.
3. Never Argue.
4. No Excessive Foul Language. (The F-Bomb and such... Things you don't want your two year old saying)

I think these are good... lol but what do i know :)

Lady Die January 20 2009 10:08 AM EST

I agree, also derogatory statements and insults should be avoided.

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] January 20 2009 10:28 AM EST

Don't annoy the OPs.
Don't troll, because those who won't take the bait will ask that you be removed. At which point ... you are annoying the OPs.

DrAcO5676 [The Knighthood III] January 20 2009 10:56 AM EST

I will say that if an op has a feeling about kicking you over questionable content, then it is not smart to continue on the road and make it a blatant case of walking over the line... If you have any questions on what might be considered pg before you speak it, ask an active op... for if you just go by what you think is proper PG it differs from what others think is proper PG.
