why is it that my FF hits my own minions? I'm not sure if it is every time but I've been noticing it a lot

That is a downside of fireball in general, in melee it backlashes fireball damage onto your own minions (but not itself).

Okay, that explains a lot. Thanks a million DoS.
Usually you're better off with Magic Missile if you absolutely need a ranged damage source and you have multiple minions.
