Why does it cost to change a characters name? (in General)

Novice's post brought up something I have been thinking about for years:

I never understood why it costs money to change a characters name. Why not make it like your user name, every month. Character are supposed to be crap (per Jon as stated in chat).

I know it can be strange not seeing that same character you use to fight day after day, but for me it is worse when someone changes their user name every 30 days. Or for some, even faster.

And why of all things, does it cost more the higher realm your in. Nothing in all of CB, except high score boards, use realms.

So anyone know why?

Well, some people change their usernames as often as possible. I think if that happened with characters it'd be a bad thing. At least it'd make it really hard to track down some characters.

If there was an AKA search for characters, then I think it'd be fine.

I never liked the charge to rename a charcater (especially as minions have no charge), and the increasing costs always caught me as strange.

The only thing I can think of is due to confusing opponents by changing your name.

But does that really warrant a 500K charge?

Wait, what? I thought it was 200k.

Character name is tied into so many things - for instance auction and transfers are linked to character not user: I suspect if you could change your char's name anytime you like it would be a little much for the server.

I just checked, so it's 150k for Gondor.

So I guess 100k for Lorien, 50k Rivendell

"Since you are in the realm of Gondor, there will be a fee of 150,000 for each Character renamed. "

Could have sworn it was 500K lol!

That's true Johnny, but the game just simply doesn't let you change your name (or retire), if you have and auction/loan attached to that character.

Would be no different if the fee was removed.
