My Open Letter To eMusic (in Off-topic)

Some lead in: I have been with eMusic for more than a decade. I have really enjoyed the changes in the digital music scene (I have been all MP3s since around 1997). eMusic had TMBG Online for a while, and introduced me to Neko Case, Alkaline Trio, Freakwater, gah, I can't name it all. Always defended it.

Then iTunes came along. Decent. Nice deliver, OK quality. encumbered, though. Man, that sucks.

Then Amazon MP3s came along. Cheaper. Better. Unencumbered.

But eMusic was still there, helping me find new stuff for a mere $15 a month for 75 fricking tracks a month. That's a lot. I could barely keep up.

Tonight I log in to eMusic and am told about great, new things. New tracks. New catalog. New look...

New pricing scheme.

What?

Fifty tracks for mroe than I am paying now (or close). A 33% reduction for me, to get some crap. Crap that was the very reason I went to eMusic in the first place.

No thanks, eMusic. Here's your Dear John:

===========

Guys, wow. I have to spend a bunch more for less tracks? No thanks. Amazon.com has all I need now. But I kept eMusic because it helped me find new things. Oh, guess what -- lotsa tools for that now, too. The new pricing scheme is ABSOLUTELY SCREWED UP. You're insane.

This is hard for me, as I have been an utterly avid eMusic fan since...1998? A decade of service. Now you are nothing more than an also-ran. Sad.

I'll never directly disparage eMusic on any forums but I'll tell folks what's up on all this. You guys are nothing now. The new rates are ridiculous. I couldn't care less about your new crap tracks in your new crap catalog. It's crap-tastic, and not worth my eardrum-wear.

Bye.

Why must you turn my office into a house of LIES?

Thanks for the heads-up, Joe. I got a "25 free MP3's" offer from these guys the other day. Looks like it's going into the dumper after all.

Heh, I suppose I did lie a little... But posting this isn't really disparage material. I am not just going around saying "DON'T USE EMUSIC!!!!!!" I tell the tale, but some folks might think they need those new crap-tastic tracks. Who knows. More power to them.

I am not going to just be a hater. I'll be fair to them. If folks can find what they want, do the math, and think eMusic is still the thing they need, I will wish then a decade of fun like I had.

But yeah, I guess I'm projecting a bit. It's hard to lose a stalwart service like that. To me, eMusic WAS the Internet.

And now the Internet is gone for me, at least in that regard.

Thats a touching story Sut, may CB never go in that direction.

QBsutekh137 June 6 2009 12:06 AM EDT

For some reason, Nayab, that is the funniest thing I have read in a long time! NICE!

I don't think CB can go in that direction, though... I hope! And it to put it in perspective, I was on eMusic almost twice as long as I have been on CB1/CB2! CRAZY!

Lord Bob June 6 2009 12:06 AM EDT

Wow, go Sut.

QBsutekh137 June 6 2009 12:11 AM EDT

Oh, I'll go... Right into eMusic's wastebasket, I assume. They've made their business choice, and I can't even say I want them to fail... I just won't be part of their constituency. *smile*

Glad i could make you laugh :)
