Can you find the change? (in Changelog)

AdminNightStrike September 18 2009 4:53 PM EDT

Try searching....

BootyGod September 18 2009 4:55 PM EDT

Great change!

I typed in Blood Vials and didn't get either A) Nothing or B) Blood donor stuff.

Hoooray!

TheHatchetman September 18 2009 4:57 PM EDT

very nice ^_^

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] September 18 2009 5:01 PM EDT

thanks nightstrike! ; )

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] September 18 2009 5:02 PM EDT

if you go to the specific forum, it still uses the old search though. ; (

AdminNightStrike September 18 2009 5:05 PM EDT

4 replies before the first complaint........ new record?

FYI, dudemus, I was waiting to see how it worked out wholeistically before trying to segment things per-forum. It's much more work than the 5 second deal I did for the complete forum search.

BootyGod September 18 2009 5:07 PM EDT

When you're drowning in the ocean and someone throws you a life preserver, it's rather silly to complain that you're still in the water.

Of course, the ocean is rather cold...

QBRanger September 18 2009 5:08 PM EDT

Or you have no arms to grab it :)

BootyGod September 18 2009 5:09 PM EDT

Well, that's silly. Who jumps into the ocean armless? Even Lieutenant Dan wasn't that crazy.

QBRanger September 18 2009 5:09 PM EDT

Or if someone threw me a life preserver and then went on their merry way, and I was still stuck in the middle of the ocean, I would still be upset.

It only delayed the inevitable.

AdminQBVerifex September 18 2009 5:11 PM EDT

I like that so much, I think you should put it on the "home" page! :)

kevlar September 18 2009 5:14 PM EDT

I agree... I like the touch of color it adds! Sweet change, and can't wait until it is tweaked out. Might want to add some other "colorful" stuff to some different pages like that... I'm no artist, but should be able to do something neat like that?

BootyGod September 18 2009 5:16 PM EDT

Themes, Kevlar, themes. How we mourn them.

QBRanger September 18 2009 5:17 PM EDT

Gosh I miss the old SNK3R theme.

kevlar September 18 2009 5:19 PM EDT

link to themes? or wait, I'll try the google search! :o

BootyGod September 18 2009 5:19 PM EDT

Yesyes. Green and black and awesome.

Last Gasp September 18 2009 5:19 PM EDT

Ranger.... only upset for a bit... then dead. So then you'd not care at all! Problem solved!

TheHatchetman September 18 2009 5:25 PM EDT

SNK3R theme ftw!

kevlar September 18 2009 5:36 PM EDT

ok I found one that was light blue, kind of UNC colors... pretty cool! http://cb.dontpanic.nl/themes.php?/NeutralMood/
couldn't find the SNK3R theme :(

Ok so, you can't do this? Just very curious. I remember Novice's post that came up on search that was recent, but it looked so intense to get things changed.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] September 18 2009 5:54 PM EDT

hmm, i did a test search to see how it works and am confused. if i type in:

pot kettle black

i get no results, however if i type in kettle i see entries with all of three of those words. i would think that the same entry would come up with all three words as well?

the way i understand is that with 3 words it should show the more relevant entries first (more instances of the words) and so on down the page?

Flamey September 18 2009 7:26 PM EDT

I remember suggesting this and probably along with other people, but yes, cool. I didn't think it'd be hard.

QBsutekh137 September 18 2009 7:49 PM EDT

What is involved with getting the Google-specific thingamajig going? Is it just allowing Google to deep-search and they searching by base URL?

Pretty cool...

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] September 18 2009 8:28 PM EDT

well i can use or to get it to work with those three words, but it should also work with just the words...weird!

AdminNightStrike September 18 2009 9:55 PM EDT

You'll have to use the search the way you would with any normal web page. All the free version consists of is essentially a normal search on google.com with "site:url" included in the beginning, with some advanced wildcard support.

When you pay the annual fee (which I did not), you get additional features like the ability to force a daily indexing of your site.

This probably works better as a search feature for the wiki, simply because of how the links are replicated. Google has to spider the forums by starting with each monthly index, and it's hard to make it smart enough to do so. It's not like I can edit the google code.

I don't know if it's possible to get a little more control using a spider configuration file. But even then, it's questionable how up to date google's search is.

I'm not advocating that this is a perfect one-size solution for us. It's just that it was instant, free, workable, and better than the current situation (since I only added a search box where none prior existed.)

QBsutekh137 September 18 2009 10:25 PM EDT

Definitely worth a try, if nothing else to experience the Google power "locally". Love it!

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] September 18 2009 10:55 PM EDT

i love it as well and did not mean to seem as though i was complaining. adding or works fine, i just didn't expect to have to do that as you do not for a standard google search and wasn't sure why.

Demigod September 18 2009 11:00 PM EDT

So the X in the top right... is that just a benign carry-over?

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] September 18 2009 11:04 PM EDT

The X clears search data, and goes back to forums view.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] September 18 2009 11:04 PM EDT

i think the x is an easy way to clear the search field of text.

PearsonTritonRaveshaw September 19 2009 2:28 PM EDT

I say next change includes a free espresso machine.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] September 19 2009 2:44 PM EDT

Wicked! Thanks NS! ;)

smallpau1 - Go Blues [Lower My Fees] September 19 2009 3:35 PM EDT

There a way to make it so it opens in the CB window, like normal forum thread links? Not a big deal, but would be nice. Like the search outcomes so far, =)

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 11 2009 10:05 PM EDT

did we lose this "feature" already?

Brakke Bres [Ow man] October 12 2009 6:40 AM EDT

This change didn't got moved onto the new server?

AdminNightStrike October 12 2009 10:05 AM EDT

Looks like Jon didn't do an svn ci before moving stuff. I'll fix it.

bartjan October 12 2009 2:14 PM EDT

Another reason why svn export exists ;)
