Easy photo-editing software (in Off-topic)

I'm trying to find a simple photo-editing program for my dad. All he needs is to learn how to crop and resize with ease. I don't want to install a copy of Photoshop on his computer as it would blow him out of the water. I haven't used GIMP, but I fear the effect would be the same. Simplicity is key, but right now I'm teaching him how to do this with MS Paint.

OS is WinXP. I expect there's freeware for something this basic, but I have no problem donning my eyepatch and swashing some buckles if need be.

For simple stuff, I just use the "fix" function in Windows Live Photo Gallery. Maybe it's not available for XP? I can straighten, crop, mess with some basic exposure issues.

Google has a free product that does basic editing... but I suspect it needs a good connection

Its called Picasa, and it can be downloaded for offline use.

It is insanely easy to do what you've described in GIMP. That's what I would recommend, even if you don't use the other features.

There's also Paint.NET, but I haven't used that yet.

Thought about Irfanview? makes cropping (even in series) and resizing very easy.

Photobucket. Simple editing tools to use, and would give him online photo storage as well to free up space on his computer.

i work with about 90 percent retired and elderly and teach them how to use their computers. i have had most luck in the past with picasa and irfanview. picasa for the absolute novice and irfanview for those with photo software experience.

picasa has even allowed some of my customers to figure out features for themselves, such as emailing a photo, which is amazing for those that were able to do this, including one with alzheimers. ; )

Thanks, guys. I downloaded a copy of Windows Live Photo Gallery on my own PC for testing, and while I haven't had much time to use it, it looks very promising. I'll take a closer look at it tonight, and then I'll check out Picasa next. The "absolute novice" comment is what I seek. The only features he'll need are resizing, cropping, and maybe an "autofix" button. Anything else is just going to add confusion.
