Character Images - Help (in General)

Demigod March 12 2010 5:39 PM EST

I have a problem, so it's up to you guys to explain it to me.

I made a simple .gif file that I'm trying to upload to my tourney character (.gifs are allowed in character pics but not user pics). The constraints are this:

"The image must be no more than 18,000 bytes and its dimensions must be no more than 120x120 pixels."

So I hacked and slashed the image down to tiny. ImageReady shows the image size as just 11KB, windows shows the size as 17.2KB (17,682 bytes), and the size on disk is 20KB.

Based on the tiny size, it should work. If the size on disk of 20KB is a problem, CB should automatically shrink the image size further. But when I upload the .gif to my minion, I get nothing. Technically, there is something. If I look really hard, I can see a pixel that represents my horrid creation, and the "delete" link appears that is not present with no image uploaded. I've tried a few times, but the result is the same.

What gives?

For your reference, I uploaded the stupid thing here: Photobucket

try using a PNG

Demigod March 12 2010 5:50 PM EST

ImageReady won't allow me to save the animation as a .png, and using Paint gives a static .png image.

CB lists .gif, .png, and .jpeg as the allowable formats, so the .gif should work...

AdminTal Destra March 12 2010 5:51 PM EST

CB hates .gif files. All .gif files get shrunken to a 1x1 image.

Thank you, come again.

animated gifs are shrunk to one pixel i believe, i also believe i see some text color changing in that.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] March 12 2010 5:57 PM EST

it has been on the known issue page as well, first item under cosmetic issues.

Dang. How'd this guy beat the bug?

either got in before it or has a small enough file... try downloading that file and reuploading it

Demigod March 12 2010 7:44 PM EST

I did. Didn't work for me.

AdminShade March 13 2010 7:41 AM EST

Why save it as gif while your original is .jpg?

Demigod March 13 2010 11:24 AM EST

JPGs are static, while GIFs can be animated. The GIF I'm trying to use has a gentle color changing effect.

AdminNightStrike March 13 2010 1:55 PM EST

It's not a bug, it's a limitation.

ImageMagick will flatten your animation, resulting in a significantly larger file size than what you think.

CB doesn't cater to animated images on purpose (much to the chagrin of Op-whatever-the-heck-his-name-is-now-Vines)

Demigod March 13 2010 1:56 PM EST

So how in the world in IxTab get one in?

Demigod March 13 2010 1:57 PM EST

I should really ask, how in the world did IxTab get one down to 7.11 KB (7,276 bytes)

AdminNightStrike March 13 2010 2:39 PM EST

Maybe he flattened it himself.

Demigod March 13 2010 2:49 PM EST

My understanding of "flattening" is that it takes the first image (or layer) and removes all animations. His is still animated. Could he have uploaded it before a limiting change?

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] March 13 2010 10:01 PM EST

well if it is not a bug, perhaps we need to make it clear that these images aren't supported in the text on the upload image page?

now it says this:

How would you like the world to see just a jigoro?

Upload your desired image --a JPEG, PNG, or GIF -- from your desktop computer system (note that you can't refer to an image elsewhere on the Internet; this image must be on your computer's hard drive).

Filename:
Use the "Browse..." button to locate your file, then click "Open".

The image must be no more than 18,000 bytes and its dimensions must be no more than 120x120 pixels. If you exceed these requirements, CB will attempt to correct for it, first by scaling to correct size, second by reducing to 256 colors, and finally by converting to a JPEG with progressively lower quality settings. (Image types besides {GIF, PNG, JPEG} will also be autoconverted to JPEG to ensure compatibility with as many browsers as possible.) After all this, if the filesize is still too large, you'll have to do some manual tweaking.

then we can remove that item from the known issues page as well!

Demigod March 13 2010 10:51 PM EST

There are also static .gif files that might be acceptable, so we can't just delete it. However, we should have a sentence stating animated files won't work.

Then you can remove it from the bug list. :)
