bartjan April 3 2010 12:12 AM EDT

Video of the previous record (5th gear) and a news report of an even faster record

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] April 3 2010 9:35 AM EDT

top gear in hd is one of the best things that have come over the pond since americans! ; )

AdminTal Destra April 3 2010 9:50 AM EDT

now i wanna do it... the fastest ive ever gone was 215 mph in a corvette, wonder if i could do it blindfolded

Demigod April 3 2010 11:43 AM EDT

Wow. This reminds me to the stories of blind men deer hunting.

And the fastest I've ever gone was 115mph (185kph) in my little old Infiniti. After that, I realized how stupid it is to speed on the freeway.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] April 3 2010 12:01 PM EDT

Wow, Tal has broken 200... I'm going to go cry into my regret pillow for a few days

AdminTal Destra April 3 2010 12:08 PM EDT

yes novice, ive done it twice

once on my busa, got to 214 before i got scared

and then in the vette it just wouldn't go any faster

Lochnivar April 3 2010 2:21 PM EDT

ah top gear....

Bringing us entertaining TV such as:

Oh, and I've been over 700mph in a 747 with a tail wind... beat that!

QBRanger April 3 2010 2:26 PM EDT

Unless it was a very heavily modified vette, the top speed of a ZR-1 is 205 MPH. The Z06 has a top speed of 195 give or take a MPH.

I seriously doubt Tal you did 215 mph in a vette.

The fastest I have been is 145 in my 2000 Audi S4 racing a M3 on I95 on the FL east cost.

Scared the poop out of me as I came up to traffic.

I did the Richard Petty Experience and rode shotgun in a stock car up to 180 MPH in Daytona. But that was just making left turns for a few laps.

I assume those numbers are on flat land? would the incline/decline of the road have any effect on this?

I know my old scooter topped out at 55, but i couldn't beat 45 going uphill and have gotten just over 70 on the way down

QBRanger April 3 2010 2:49 PM EDT

I seriously doubt there is a place where a decline is long enough, flat enough and straight enough to get over 200 MPH. I could be wrong however.

The only "safe" place I know of, aside from race tracks built for this specific purpose is the Autobahn in Germany.

AdminG Beee April 3 2010 3:14 PM EDT

Other than for keeping it legal, I'm sure you don't need to go to Germany to reach these kind of speeds "safely" Ranger. The Autobahn is generally just like many other major highways, it's just that the crazy Germans don't do speed limits in certain areas : )
I've had a few friends over the years who claim to have pushed 200mph on bikes here in Scotland.

Allegedly there's a guy who was given a speeding ticket for doing 242mph in Texas..! Certainly the UK speeding ticket record is 201mph - ouch... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_ticket

Anyway, am I the only one that recognised the irony in the fact the driver was presented with a certificate (with lots of writing on it) afterwards... I'd have thought a trophy would have been more appropriate.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] April 3 2010 3:32 PM EDT

Tal has a busa?

AdminG Beee April 3 2010 3:34 PM EDT

I thought that was a typo Novice and he was bragging about having a bus.

AdminTal Destra April 3 2010 3:37 PM EDT

Ranger, you don't know the kind of people I hang out with. The only thing to do down here is race cars and modify them to the breaking point.

Yes Novice, I OWN an 05 Suzuki Hayabusa. Wanna take it for a spin?

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] April 3 2010 11:34 PM EDT

i was just going to say that there are some pretty impressive grades on i10 in texas as you drop down from the great plains into the hill country.

i wish i knew where that record was set in texas but with 50 miles of my house would be my first guess.
