Car Question - Remote Start (in Off-topic)

Demigod April 9 2010 11:41 PM EDT

I bought a 2008 Avenger SXT today, and dealer only had one key (non-electronic). That means I have to buy an electronic key blank Thing thing.

The question is, how can I tell if the car has remote start installed? I can't give my VIN to a dealer this late at night, but I know there are ways to find out, possibly a model number listed somewhere.

Any of you car guys have a clue?

Also, if you know of a cheap site to order those keys that's not Ebay, I'd love to hear it.

For the SXT 2008 Avenger, the remote start was an option and not standard.

You would most likely have to have the invoice from the car to see if that was installed on this vehicle.

Since you have the VIN, perhaps a Carfax report may have the options it came with. If not, perhaps calling Dodge customer service and giving them the VIN may help them tell you if the remote start was on this particular vehicle.

Another thing,

I know you bought this used. But typically you get 2 keys for the vehicle. Since the one key that you have was non-electronic, it is likely the remote start was not on this vehicle. Typically you get 2 keys with any vehicle and if it had the remote start, both would be electronic keys. Then the one you have would likely be the valet key.

Try this key in the glove box. If it works on it, then this is one of the main keys. If not, most likely both electronic keys are lost/missing (valet keys do not work on the glove most).

Apparently my key is electronic in the sense that it's a chipped transponder key. I meant to say that it doesn't have buttons to control the locks or trunk.

Now that the dealership's open, I called and gave the VIN, but the parts guy doesn't think it has the optional remote start (which I wouldn't use anyway). At least I know which key to get.

Ah,

Then you do not have the remote start.

I believe you can get an after market remote start installed.

I won't bother installing one, as I probably wouldn't use it often. But I did go ahead and buy a key online. I'll still have to take it to a dealer to have it cut and programmed, but it shaved off a bit of the cost.

it really helps on cold mornings though, you should look into it. warm up your car and not leave the comfort of your house, w00t!

Also really helps if you think you may have made the Mafia angry with you.....

You know what else helps? A garage. Living in Georgia also helps with those "cold" mornings. If anything, I'd use it on the the insanely hot July afternoons to roll down the windows before leaving the office. But I can't validate installing it just for July and August.

If anything, I'd install the MyGig system, the LockPick hack, and a backup camera.
