Yo dudes, one thing we're missing in the forums... (in General)

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] July 19 2010 12:06 AM EDT

It's been brought forth before, I know...and IIRC, what we all (most of us) thought about the idea was "AW HELL NO!"...

...but forum siggies would be nice. Make em unchangeable for a month like user names. Make em subject to PG rules, why not? Make em restricted like Tweets. 100 characters maximum, that sort of thing. No pics if you find that annoying, even.

The bottomline is: I want to show everybody else the obscure quotes that take up so much space in my memory. Come on! They have to be there for a reason! I need to show off my illusory individuality! I want to let CB know I've seen Blade Runner/read Watchmen.

Y'know?

I agree. Sigs are great.

Eh... I can't imagine that improving the forums. Right now, we have simple text that's easy to read and flows well. Making it janky with tons of signatures just doesn't appeal to me. I think the forums are one of the few areas where CB beats the rest of the web.

Agreed.

To me it's a matter of dosage. Of course, if you allow 10000x100000 pics, the posts are gonna be lost in a sea of sigs.

However, I think by making the rules clear we can infuse a bit more character into our writings. Right now it's pretty much 'oh yeah, that's the guy who likes Exbows'...

...which is fine if said guy posts ten times a day, but is less awesome for more casual posters. (Like me, but also like a lot of interesting, less known players. Not that I'm interesting or anything, I mostly post to say some stuff is "awesome". LOL amiright folks?? )

AdminShade July 19 2010 1:15 AM EDT

In other words, what you want is a 1 line, ~50 characters maximum signature?

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] July 19 2010 1:18 AM EDT

Why not? I'd certainly take that over nothing.

A Lesser AR of 15 [Red Permanent Assurance] July 19 2010 1:31 AM EDT

I object and raise you wacky animated user pics.

Wraithlin July 19 2010 1:47 AM EDT

signatures would be interesting and flavorful for about 3 threads and then it'll become long and tedious trying to follow a conversation that is 3x longer because every post has 2 additional blank lines, two more lines of a signature (that you've seen 10 times already) and then another blank line.

Ankou July 19 2010 2:16 AM EDT

Forums that allow large pics or funky text in their sigs can detract from the overall thread; if your post is one line, and your sig is 45 lines worth of blinky pics and really hard to read text, then it doesn't matter what you had to say, I'm not going to read it.

One line formatted exactly the same as current posts (same font, color etc.) will not detract from the main body of the text and should not become an eye sore, even for small posts.

-----------------------
I vote for one line worth of sig separated by a line, box or other minimalistic separator from the post. A single line or so should be enough characters to have a unique and distinguishing signature.

Ankou for president!

If sigs are implemented (and text-only, limited # of characters is the way to go), I would suggest them being automatically formatted in a smaller text size and dark gray text to help keep them "separate" from the flow of the actual messages and easy to ignore.

Maybe even an option to turn their display on/off (it could just be a CSS change, really).

ScrObot: Exactly.

ScrObot July 19 2010 3:00 AM EDT

Not even a nod for Secretary of State? Hmmph. ;)

Shadow Ruler July 19 2010 3:08 AM EDT

I affirm your wacky outlandish proposition for sigs in the forums however the forums itself will have to be easy to read. Maybe something like a pic with stats in it like MPR/PR/funny detail like a mage holding a fire ball. I duno how admins/mods are guna do this but it would be cool to use to post under other forums with, get some fresh meat into CB
