Glenn Beck is shady, but that was obvious :v

AdminNightStrike July 29 2010 1:24 PM EDT

Interesting.. I tried to buy gold from Goldline, but they couldn't give me a competitive rate on bullion. They never offered that French stuff.

QBRanger July 29 2010 1:50 PM EDT

Simple enough.

When buying gold or thinking about it, do your shopping and get prices from many different companies. Then choose the best.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] July 29 2010 2:05 PM EDT

Heh, buyer beware indeed.

What you're really saying is that the people stupid enough to buy at those rates deserve to be exploited and ripped off. This is a show on a news channel telling you the economy is going to crash and hyperinflation is just around the bend all while spamming your brain with ads from a particular company... this is a scam. It's a great example of how much respect Beck has for his viewers.

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] July 29 2010 2:08 PM EDT

Investing some of your money into gold is ummm how do I put this... um... great advice? Maybe buying it from Goldline, not so much, I can't personally say, never tried to buy from them.

QBRanger July 29 2010 2:20 PM EDT

Ah, now I found it:

http://www.sequenceinc.com/fraudfiles/2010/06/01/barry-minkow-debunks-the-glenn-beck-and-goldline-international-fraud-connection/

2 sides to every story.

It is not very strange that Mr. Weiner, a very liberal Demoncrat is going after Beck, a very staunch "conservative". They cannot beat him in the ratings, then cannot debunk his theories of corruption in the Obama/Demoncratic administration, so they take a page out of Alinsky's book and try to go after him so more peripheral way.

Here is their full report on this sham:

http://frauddiscovery.net/Goldline%20International.pdf

The key part if you do not want to read 100 pages: Their conclusion:

The problem with this kind of investigation is answering the motive question. That is, it is rare
for a United States Congressman to come out with such a strong condemnation against a single
company in private industry, a business that happens to support one of the Representativeメs
biggest political enemies. In the opinion of FDI, politics has hit an all-time low. It is clear from
the evidence that Goldline International is a respectable company in the gold-coin selling
business, have treated their customers well, and corrected any problems along the way.
The report issued by Congressman Weiner lists a total of nine people who endorse Goldline.
However, Glenn Beck is mentioned no less than eight times, while the others are mentioned on a
per person basis, twice. However, each person mentioned share in common the fact that they are
all public people, who, for the most part, host successful and nationally syndicated radio shows
(including Dennis Miller and Laura Ingraham) or who are conservative political personalities
such as former presidential candidate and actor Fred Thompson.
Each also shares in common political views, which are for the most part opposed those of
Congressman Weiner. Most listed in Congressman Weinerメs report also make frequent
appearances on the Fox News Channel and, as already noted have been or are currently paid
spokespersons for Goldline International.
There is little doubt that the primary target of the report is Glenn Beck, which goes back to
motive. However, when it comes to that issue, the Fraud Discovery Institute, Inc. moves out of
its field of expertise. Theories are nothing more than conjecture. What can be known for certain
are two things: first, the Fraud Discovery Institute, Inc. does know how to identify, infiltrate and
proactively uncover fraud schemes and secondly, based on that knowledge and experience and
evidence weメve gathered, we can state that Goldline International is no fraud.

This is the same Rep who wanted to haul in all the big companies who stated they were going to have to post Billions of dollars of losses after Obamacare was passed. Asked to see numerous internal documents on a witch hunt. Then, after finding they were doing what they were required to do, cancelled the inquisition and skulled back into the hole he lives in.
Politics as usual, nothing to be seen here, move on....

None of that actually answers the simple question of why a news channel is making claims of hyperinflation and impending doom right before they show an ad.

A Lesser AR of 15 [Red Permanent Assurance] July 29 2010 2:38 PM EDT

Welcome to Ranger's spin zone.

AdminQBVerifex July 29 2010 2:39 PM EDT

But it does beg the question: Ranger, why are you defending Glenn Beck?

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] July 29 2010 2:43 PM EDT

They're not the only one's predicting hyperinflation nov. It is a "news" station.

A Lesser AR of 15 [Red Permanent Assurance] July 29 2010 2:52 PM EDT

There's predicting and then there's spamming constant fearmongery to get that buck in the collection plate.

QBRanger July 29 2010 4:09 PM EDT

But it does beg the question: Ranger, why are you defending Glenn Beck?

Maybe because he is right on this point.

As I would defend any liberal if they were ever right :)

QBRanger July 29 2010 4:10 PM EDT

None of that actually answers the simple question of why a news channel is making claims of hyperinflation and impending doom right before they show an ad.

Because more than a few economics believe this will be the case if the current path we are on stays the same.

Demigod July 29 2010 4:20 PM EDT

It is a "news" station.

I fully agree with the added quotes. And in journalism, there's a saying about the appearance of impropiety...

AdminQBVerifex July 29 2010 4:26 PM EDT

Journalistic impropriety doesn't apply to Glenn Beck, as he is an entertainment and opinion show. Which is the ultimate fallback position in this debate. Bam!

AdminQBVerifex July 30 2010 5:18 PM EDT

Journalistic propriety, at least as far as most people are concerned, means reporting news and making judgments about a story. When you demonize and proselytize during a serious story about a problem, such as Beck's attack on the Tides Foundation, you move over from the side of serious journalist that demands respect, to loony blowhard who just says whatever to draw attention to himself.

An example of why journalists and the media should tone down their demonization and proselytization is here: Mentally unbalanced felon attempts to go on shooting rampage at Tides Foundation HQ. Crazy people just need a catalyst to get them going. That's why people get angry about people using violent rhetoric, because it incites people who aren't quite smart enough (or stable enough) to know better, to do stupid and crazy things.
