I don't even like Maxim, but free is free. Likely only available for U.S. residents.

Everyone else get the "Thank you for taking the BCS Clues Challenge. Unfortunately, due to our limited quantity you will not be able to receive the complimentary Maxim subscription." message?

Got this (today) about 3 weeks after I completed the quiz thingy...

Demigod November 4 2010 1:47 PM EDT

I got the same message, but the person who sent it to me already received two issues.

And yeah, they don't have a large enough quantity of free year subscriptions, but they have a special offer of $5.99 for that same year... lol.

Pwned November 5 2010 7:56 PM EDT

would this be in a junk email folder? I haven't received the mag or a email.

A lesson in magazine fulfillment that applies even to far better publications like American Girl and Knitting Today:

There is no such thing as running out of future issues of a magazine.

Magazines are printed 90ish days prior to newsstand pub date.

Publishers consider how many subscribers they currently have, and guesstimate how many new subscribers they are likely to get, in deciding how many copies of any particular issue to print.

When you subscribe to a magazine, the publisher's fulfillment house goes to their stack of "supplementary copies" (the guesstimated overage printed) and mails you one.

When the supplementary copies run out, you have to wait until a new issue is printed to be mailed a magazine.

For most people this means, if you order a magazine on Oct. 15, you will receive the September, October, & November issues within a 7-14 days.

The December issue will be mailed to you "on schedule" to arrive in late November, even though it was printed before you subscribed.

You will have received 4 issues of your 12-issue subscription within the 1st 2 months of your "year".

*If the people who subscribed "not on time but before you" got all the Sept. issues, then you will get Oct. and Nov. Same again might mean you only get Nov. It is only when they have printed far too few "supp" or overage copies that you get the "sorry we're out" message -- which should only mean that you have to wait all the way to "the December issue" to start your subscription.

**If the offer to which you are responding was made not by the publisher but by an "agency", then it may be limited to the total number of "free or near-free" subscriptions it is allowed to process. This may explain "we're out" having nothing to do with the fact that magazines can be printed in (effectively) unlimited supply.

***For almost any consumer magazine, you can phone the toll-free customer service line and talk your way into the best possible subscription rate and the most fun/awesome/ridiculous freebies just by saying "I'd like your best possible rate and whatever you have in the way of fun/awesome/ridiculous freebies."

Um, out of morbid curiosity, what kind of freebies would a magazine like Maxim, which caters to the 17-25 male demographic, actually have? Even worse, knitting today?

This reminds me of the handful of Dr. Drew condoms I once got.
