EVE is changing face, which one would you pick ? (in Off-topic)

Sickone January 11 2011 12:47 AM EST

The old character generator is about to become obsolete.

My current in-game portrait looks like this (and has looked like that for almost 5 years):
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/6547/akitatv1tq.jpg

The new character generator has been undergoing some pretty hefty changes (and it's not completely done yet, only by the end of the month, maybe), but with one of the earlier models open to the public I managed to pull this one off:
http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/2499/akitatv2.jpg
Granted, it's intentionally older for personal reasons, but I couldn't get it to resemble the original too much.

Gave it a try with the current almost-finished version but skipped the "old" this time, and I got something like this:
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/1452/akitatv3a.jpg
Sure, it looks more attractive, but, meh...

Would you say the latter one would be more appropriate, or does it seem to you that the "old" look is a bit more distinguished ?

Lord Bob January 11 2011 12:52 AM EST

That third one is sexy. And graphically, looks way better than the first one. I'd pick number three hands down.

QBOddBird January 11 2011 1:01 AM EST

Yeah, I'd go with the third one as well.

Sickone January 11 2011 1:04 AM EST

The first one will no longer be an option, everybody has to change it to the new models, the old type portraits are being replaced by generic exclamation mark placeholders.

The second and the third are basically the same character.
I could recreate the look in the second with the version in live testing now, but I couldn't have quite created the third back when I created the second, there were quite a few options missing back then (they were mostly just textures, clothing, eye colours and such, but also fine-tuning of facial expression and so on).
There are literally hundreds of parameters to tweak (if you ever played Mass Effect 2, well, THAT character creator is highly limited compared to the new one in EVE), and each have dozens of options, "age" and "scarring" are just two of them that I have chosen the exact opposites for in versions 2 and 3 of the portrait.
As for the actual face (as in facial structure and such), that's still changing in my mind :)

I was basically just wondering about what direction should I go towards with the look, "old, battle-hardened and dignified" or "young, attractive and playful" - that goes for both general look and also positioning for the picture.
I could also make it "young, battle-scarred with an angry look in a dismissive pose" if I wanted, for instance :P

Sickone January 11 2011 1:08 AM EST

To get a better idea of what's possible (my character's race/bloodline is different, so even with the same options it would look different), a vid made by some other player with an intermediate version of the character generator...

Lord Bob January 11 2011 1:15 AM EST

The second and the third are basically the same character.
Wow. Maybe twenty very rough years in between.

I still say number three.

Sickone January 11 2011 1:18 AM EST

Wow. Maybe twenty very rough years in between.

Yeah, that was the idea ;)

Canibus January 11 2011 3:56 AM EST

EVE the mmorpg? That game is sweet, if I had some extra hours every day Id re-start playing that. Go with 2nd, thats one brutal and secure female.

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] January 11 2011 8:56 AM EST

The first one is vaguely cross-eyed, so kudos to you for getting along like that all these years.

The third one appears to be storing suspicious items in her lady garments.

The crone with the great posture wins!

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] January 11 2011 9:05 AM EST

Looks pretty graphics intensive. What kinda system do you have? o.o

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 11 2011 9:43 AM EST

hmm, do you want to look sexy and sensitive or tough and intimidating?

Sickone January 11 2011 11:52 AM EST

Looks pretty graphics intensive. What kinda system do you have? o.o

Used to run it on an intel DualCore@1.6GHz with a 512 MB 8500GT quite nicely at max ingame settings except shadows and bloom effects (plus no forced AA) in 1600x1024 windowed mode, the vidcard fried eventually (rather small passive heat sink, hot and dusty room, you do the math), funnily enough NOT while playing EVE but Starcraft II, replaced it temporarily with a much cheaper (and slower) 512 MB Radeon 4350 and still worked somewhat decently FPS-wise (but I reduced it to 1600x900 because the ATI didn't support the other one).

Now I have an i5-760 with a 1 GB 460 GTX, ramping everything to the max including new AA support (and I force it to 32xMSAA) and with vsynch on (my monitor's refresh rate is 85 Hz, so I top-cap the FPS at 85 that way) it hardly uses a quarter of my CPU and about two fifths of my video card power.

Should work just fine for the next couple of years (if you don't ramp up the detail levels too high) on just about any video card that supports DirectX 9 Pixel Shader 3.0 (and you can find some for well under 50$).

hmm, do you want to look sexy and sensitive or tough and intimidating?

The problem is, I want all of the above (except not so much on the sensitive side) :D
I want it to look tough enough and not promiscuous for outsiders to discourage lame cybering attempts or "hey baby" idiotic remarks, but pleasant enough to not mind seeing it a lot while playing, especially once they introduce the "in-station" environments some time this spring/summer (the new character generator is the first step for that, rolling out one expansion earlier).

3

AdminShade January 11 2011 12:36 PM EST

I'd definitely pick the 3rd option, but that's because I like both red heads as well as a bit of facial freckles :)

Sickone January 11 2011 2:36 PM EST

Hair color and frecklishness can easily be adjusted either way on both character portraits :P

Sickone January 18 2011 6:32 PM EST

I went with something in between...

http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/3858/akitatcomposite.jpg

The "new TQ" one (TQ being the name of the live server, SiSi being the test server) is the one I have picked... for now.
It's by no means final and I can change as many times as I like, but it would cost me (thankfully I can easily afford to pay with in-game cash).

Admiralkiller [Cult of the Valaraukar] January 18 2011 6:40 PM EST

No offense that's the least appealing out of them all.

Sickone January 18 2011 6:44 PM EST

None taken :)

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] January 18 2011 6:50 PM EST

Just out of curiosity, why is your ma in character a girl? I've heard something along the lines of "if you're gonna be staring at a butt all day, it might as well be a woman's" but I always saw game characters as an extension of myself, which is why I would always play a male if I had the option.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 18 2011 6:56 PM EST

perhaps it is a feminine extension? ; )

Sickone January 18 2011 6:57 PM EST

Some people consider their avatar to be an aspect of or an extension of themselves, other people consider their avatar to be a different persion they direct or control to do stuff.
I find myself in the latter category, while you seem to adhere to the former.

Whenever I play a game that allows gender customization, there are about equal chances for me to pick any gender. I wonder though how you feel about some older games that don't allow you to pick a gender but impose one for you instead (either only one main character exists, like, say, in Tomb Raider... or the main character's gender being determined by class, like, say, in Diablo 2).

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] January 18 2011 7:17 PM EST

Yeah, that's when I meant, if you don't have an option of being a male, then obviously it's not something I worry about. So that's why I can enjoy Tomb Raider and games where gender is defined by class.

Sickone January 18 2011 7:32 PM EST

ROFL, people are going bonkers with their new portraits...

http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1450733
http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1450771
etc

...if you click on the portrait thumbnail a moderate-resolution version pops up, click on it and you go back to where you were before you clicked it.

If you're curious what other came up with (today was the deployment of it on the regular server).

Lord Bob January 18 2011 8:39 PM EST

I went with something in between...
I do not like her at all.

I'm still picking the hot redhead.

Demigod January 18 2011 9:11 PM EST

I'm sitting here trying to be supportive, but I just don't get it. She looks like she spent too many years wrangling horses in the open sun. I know that might be exactly what you're aiming for, but remember that you've got to look at that mug for the next few years.

There are only two acceptable choices in online games. One, a male with chiseled features that make you think "commander." Or two, space bimbo. From the looks of it, you've chosen commander bimbo. That's not acceptable.

:p

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] January 18 2011 9:41 PM EST

Well put, Demi. Commander bimbo FTL.

Sickone January 18 2011 9:43 PM EST

I know that might be exactly what you're aiming for, but remember that you've got to look at that mug for the next few years.

First off, I'd totally be willing to date a girl that looked like that in real-life, she looks ordinary and sort of rugged but somewhat pleasant :P
But yeah, I don't know what went wrong, I tried to recreate something closer to the "young gal" facial-structure-wise but it just wouldn't fit again like it used to.
Anyway, I can get a redo any time I want if I pay a little (either RL cash or in-game item purchased with in-game money)... and I could probably afford a few hundred "redos" at the level of in-game funding I can spare right now ;)

P.S. The game is freely downloadable right from their site and you can make as many 14-day trial accounts as you have email addresses (and you can make as many of those as you like, so, basically, unlimited trials), if you think you want to suggest a different look (mine was Caldari/Achura/Female - you have to work within the bloodline/gender you first selected), since you can play with the character creator as much as you like before you finalize and save any portrait :P

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] January 19 2011 12:50 AM EST

Aileen Wuornos? Really?

Demigod January 19 2011 1:08 AM EST

Lol, Sickone just can't catch a break. This is the last time he'll ever ask for our opinions. But she really does look like the serial killer prostitute... maybe I was right with Commander Bimbo.

Lord Bob January 19 2011 1:20 AM EST

Aileen Wuornos?
Heh.

Demigod January 19 2011 1:22 AM EST

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aileen_Wuornos

Check out the mug.

Sickone January 19 2011 1:35 AM EST

I admit to a very, very vague resemblance, but nothing else :P

Sickone January 19 2011 1:55 AM EST

Plus, I'd say the resemblance is better with any of these two:
http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/2524/whynotthese.jpg
:P

Demigod January 19 2011 2:06 AM EST

It's certainly not the first one... though she'd make a great avatar.

AdminNemesia [Demonic Serenity] January 19 2011 2:39 AM EST

There's nothing wrong with that avatar picture Sickone. If that's the avatar picture you like then go with it.

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] January 19 2011 9:14 AM EST

Photobucket

This is a "good" look for her. Feel free to check out Google Image with "Monster Charlize" for further likenesses.

Lord Bob January 19 2011 1:12 PM EST

Plus, I'd say the resemblance is better with any of these two
That avatar doesn't look anything even remotely like Alyson Hannigan or Christina Ricci. Far closer to Charlize Theron's Aileen Wuornos, or even the real Aileen than the two you claim.

Sickone January 20 2011 2:13 AM EST

You're gonna' make ma redo it, aren't you ? :P

QBOddBird January 20 2011 2:35 AM EST

that'll teach you to come to CB asking for opinions! We have them!

Sickone January 21 2011 3:55 AM EST

You know what, I like my serialkiller Irish factory worker, so I'm gonna' keep her for a while :P

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] January 21 2011 9:41 AM EST

If I made a girl i'd make her super hot.
