The Passage (book) (in Off-topic)

Been a long long time since I read a book so engrossing.

Simliar to The Stand but very different in a lot of ways.

If you like a vampire type story that develops the characters and is beautifully written, check this out.

About 760 pages and it is the first of a trilogy. The next 2 books are due in '12 and '14.

Author is Justin Cronin.

Wiki link, Spoilers if you read too much:

Looks rather interesting.

I do.

I take it that it bears no similarity to crappy Twilight, correct?

The Passage begins in the near future and details an apocalyptic and, later, post-apocalyptic world that is overrun by vampire-like beings that are infected by a highly contagious virus. What begins as a project to develop a new immunity-boosting drug based on a virus carried by an unnamed species of bat in South America eventually becomes the virus that transforms the world.
Sounds very similar to I Am Legend/The Omega Man.

It certainly does.

However, all movies/books of this genre have the same type of setup. The military unleashes a virus, the CDC experiments and a virus escapes etc..

It is the way the characters are developed, the descriptions of the scenery, and the overall plot that sets this book apart from most.

It also jumps from the year the virus gets free to 92 years in the future.

I felt is was a great read and hope someone else does also.

I decided to go ahead and grab the book off eBay. I'm only about 230 pages into it, but the first 100 were very engrossing -- so much so that I ended up knocking out the first 85 pages in one long evening.

I forgot this thread was still active. Just an FYI, but the book is a worthy read. If you're looking for something to pick up, give it a shot.
