From the looks of it, it doesn't fire in ranged at all. If he got any closer, he'd knock over the target with the sling-chete itself.

Looks to me, from the video, that it fires in the last round of ranged only, when the enemy is too close to miss.

And then you spend 2 rounds retrieving the weapon.
