Why I hate Clans (in General)

Vaynard [Fees Dirt Cheap] April 1 2011 10:01 PM EDT

Okay, maybe hate is a bit of a strong word. However, I do feel strongly that clans are detrimental to CB and its players.

First of all, they are basically a necessity. If you want to grow your char, you need to be in a clan. People are forced into them or they lose cash, XP, and now ritual benefits. Being forced to join a group wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, except it comes with a wide range of other problems.

Clans encourage unhealthy play. Instead of an optimized fight list of the teams that best reward you that you can blow 160 ba on in 10 minutes, to be successful you should focus on the top 3 or 4 clanners you can hit. No matter if this means playing for several hours on end as you wait for your tiny list to refresh and other people to stop farming you. In my mind CB is a casual game that people play a little bit each day for the fun of it. Clans run counter to that notion.

Clans create a burden. You no longer play for the fun of it, seeing what you can do and how high your MPR can get. Now you are in it to support the team. Don't fight 2500CP a day? You're holding everyone back! A clan-member's worth is now based on how many jerks farm him constantly.

Solutions:
1. Stop letting farmers take away points from others. It's demoralizing, mean-spirited, and completely unnecessary. Let your contribution to the clan be purely that, contribution only. If not removed, limit it to something reasonable like no more than 50CP subtracted a day per person.
2. Stop CP gains if one team has a significant PR or MPR advantage over another. These fights prove nothing other than the reward system at the top is broken.
3. Have all clans auto disband annually. Let's make people meet new people on here. One clan practically untouchable? Well next year they'll have to rearrange. Everyone is affected equally and large amounts of discussion and strategy will be created.
4. Rebalance clan rituals. IDK about everyone else but the only thing I've ever seen cast is +5AC. Not much strategy or flair there.

That's all for now. I just wanted to share my rationale for exiting the infernal rat race known as the clan system. Good luck to those of you that feel otherwise. At least rest easy knowing that clans are safe with CB now being a stagnant game without changes, upgrades, or additions.

I've often thought that people should be assigned a clan on joining, with no movement allowed.
The fight list thing is certainly a problem though

AdminNemesia [Demonic Serenity] April 2 2011 2:15 PM EDT

You just haven't been in the right type of clan.

Lord Bob April 2 2011 2:30 PM EDT

I disagree.

Admiralkiller [Cult of the Valaraukar] April 2 2011 2:30 PM EDT

I agree with some of what you say.I would not nerf clans but boost being solo.

An idea could be a flat rate gain for not being in a clan. Like 7.5% bonus. Or based on the amount of BA spent on a % basis on the amount you have available weekly. So if you spent 100% of your BA you would gain 15% bonus, 50% of your weekly ba you would gain 7.5%.

Another could be unique rituals for those not in clans they could apply to themselves with a flat rate of points allowed each week. Or points gained from amount of ba spent. Something obviously not OP or able to abuse.

There should be advantages and disadvantages to both, after all IRL their are advantages and disadvantages to being in a group. (not saying this game should be like RL just trying to prove a point)

Demigod April 2 2011 2:53 PM EDT

I like my clan... except Sickone. He smells like cheese.

But I do agree somewhat with #2 and especially #4. Leviathan Scales (+5AC) is all we cast.

Windwalker April 2 2011 2:54 PM EDT

Ulmo! Nice idea. You could put a cost on such things as no backlash on magic cast. Have a whole list of things you could use to boost your solo guy that do not apply if your in a clan.

Sickone April 2 2011 5:10 PM EDT

Please, I smell like fresh Kashkaval !

I can't disagree with anything Vaynard said.
But I think simply solving #1 would be mostly enough for now.

Why is CB full of so many namby pamby's?

It's demoralizing, mean-spirited, and completely unnecessary.

It's a competitive game, where people try to kill you. Suck it up Susan.

QBOddBird April 2 2011 7:37 PM EDT

I agree, I hate clans.

But mine has an awesome name.

I do like having points taken away but would advocate a cap on the points on can lose to one character a day. Perhaps 250 per character. A "mercy" rule type of thing.

2. Stop CP gains if one team has a significant PR or MPR advantage over another. These fights prove nothing other than the reward system at the top is broken.

Since rewards are based upon things such as score and PR of your opponent, if someone wants to fight down to beat you, fine. They are losing on potential xp and $$$. But if there was a maximum negative per character this would stop the worst abuses.

3. Have all clans auto disband annually. Let's make people meet new people on here. One clan practically untouchable? Well next year they'll have to rearrange. Everyone is affected equally and large amounts of discussion and strategy will be created.

No way. What would happen is the same people would remake the same clan. And some clans are icons of the game. Totally against it.

4. Rebalance clan rituals. IDK about everyone else but the only thing I've ever seen cast is +5AC. Not much strategy or flair there.

I cannot comment on the rituals. But I suspect NS would be willing to balance them better if they be skewed.

Fishead April 2 2011 8:35 PM EDT

I agree with Titan, and I'm at a spot where the only way for me to keep out of the negatives is to buy BA every day at rediculous prices.

Boo hoo for me.

AdminNemesia [Demonic Serenity] April 2 2011 8:44 PM EDT

The Ritual system itself hasn't been completed yet. What is in use right now is a half made system. As for which rituals are most used right now it is pretty clear that the most used ones are Leviathan Scales, Solitude of the Seas and Insight. Most of the rest only see activation every so often.

Phaete April 3 2011 5:05 AM EDT

It was nice trying to autodisband a clan driving it to minus alot with combined effort of other clans (long time ago)

I think most can be solved with a 'personal fit'.
All depends on how much your clan asks from you, and how much you are willing to let that interfere with your normal fighting/daily life.

I surely won't apply to any topclan, as i cannot give what they want, but i have a good clan now where i can decide myself what to contribute, and when.

Sickone April 3 2011 6:13 AM EDT

"140 active users from the past 7 days"

Half of those are idle or outside of clans, and some of those remaining are too low to bother with score-wise as a clanner.
Guess what that means for clan warfare.

Phrede April 3 2011 7:05 AM EDT

Yes I agree lets do away with clans - also lets get rid of chat. Actually the auctions are a bit pointless also. Another thing that needs rebalancing is the amount of BA we have to use - lets reduce it to 10 per day.

Sickone April 3 2011 12:51 PM EDT

Yes I agree lets do away with clans

Nobody said that. Only that the current clan system is a tad bit too hostile compared to just about everything else.

Demigod April 3 2011 1:51 PM EDT

Just to clarify my stance, I like trying to shed attackers. It's great watching an attacker or two have to drop me from their list, but it's complete crap watching people who are done with N*Bs struggle to stay out of the negatives, ultimately dropping from clans when they can't seem to do it.

All it takes to fix that is to tweak the way points are calculated.
