Can somebody please trim the botcheck ? (in General)

Sickone August 17 2011 8:57 AM EDT

All those double-t and double-f words are pretty confusing, because they look so much alike. They're probably not identical, but to me, they LOOK identical.
And don't tell me I'll get used to it eventually, it's been years and I didn't, the damned "f"s look way too similar to the damn "t"s, I still confuse them at least half the time and have to GUESS which one is it based on whether I believe it might be a valid word or not.
This is a problem especially when both choices are a valid word.

For instance, puff and putt (like I just had one).
It was most likely "putt" but I entered "puff".

Thankfully, next word was clear enough, so I didn't get slammed, but still, it should be a matter of statistics before somebody with a similar problem gets double-slammed.

Can somebody PLEASE do a very quick trim of all words with "tt" and "ff" in it (or at least those that have both options as valid) ?
While you're at it, can you also be cutting out all words where changing "t" with "f" or vice-versa still results in a valid word ?

Ideally, one would change the way "t"s and "f"s would be displayed, to make them far more distinctive... if possible, please, do that instead.
But I believe a dictionary search and trim should be far easier than changing the text generation code, no ?

I think they should have less frequency as well.

I FREAKING HATE THEM!

Can I pay USD to have them eliminated for ever? or even an annual fee?

AdminNightStrike August 17 2011 9:08 AM EDT

Unfortunately, we've had users that have tried to abuse the site. The botchecks as they are proved to not even be a big enough nuisance for the user Dawg, who had his bot fail a bunch of checks and just kept paying the fines.

Admiralkiller [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 17 2011 9:10 AM EDT

I completely understand and know why it's there. Still does not make me like them more. Also I still offer money to stop them. (for only myself :-P)

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] August 17 2011 9:10 AM EDT

those letters used to give me trouble but no longer do so. the t's will not drop below the baseline for the text whereas the f's do go well below the baseline.

Guardian August 17 2011 9:47 AM EDT

I rule the botcheck

yeah yeah

Good advice.
Now if only the bottom word would ALWAYS allow for clear viewing, all would be peachy :P

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 17 2011 11:16 AM EDT

F and T is all about tails...

What do you mean about the bottom word?

Demigod August 17 2011 11:42 AM EDT

I think he means when the bottom letters encroach just perfectly so that Hs and Bs or As and Es look alike.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] August 17 2011 1:53 PM EDT

i took it to mean that even knowing a t doesn't have a tail, then if the lower word has like an L in it it can make the t look like an f with a tail.

that does happen occasionally but most of the time the tail differentiation works and for those other cases that is why we get two attempts now. ; )

This happened to me a few weeks ago.

What DAWG did was different.

He had a program that hit the C button followed by the space. Every botcheck was CCC and was missed.

If the botchecks were changed to the easiest in existance, DAWG would have still failed them the same exact way, and would have been flagged the exact same way.

AdminNightStrike August 18 2011 1:44 PM EDT

Not really. If they were easier, he could have been more inclined to make (or buy) a tool that would answer them correctly.

From Drop Box

Look at the difference between the T and the F in the word "Rift". I agree, the t's and f's used to trip me up, but they don't anymore, because while they look similar, there are definite differences that are easy to see. The f has a long tail out to the bottom left, but does not have a swirl on the top right. The t has a small tail facing to the bottom right, and a large swirl on the top. Print out this picture and tape it next to your monitor if you have to, but it's not that hard.

QBRanger August 18 2011 2:57 PM EDT

For me it is not the words, but the frequency-sometimes.

Just this AM I had what felt to be 10 botchecks burning 160 BA.

Other days I go the 160 BA without 1 botcheck. Not a problem when I have enough time, but when I am trying to get out in the morning, it can slow me down enough to be a pain.

AdminG Beee August 18 2011 3:49 PM EDT

It's all good and I don't think we need to edit the botcheck dictionary :)
You've only missed 16 botchecks all year sickone and only 3 of them were because you misread a difficult check (tend/fend, hash/bash, putt/puff), the rest were all typos.

Quyen August 18 2011 3:56 PM EDT

lol, when i was was burning ridiculous ba, i had like 5 in 70 BA or so :|

someone[onabreak] August 18 2011 4:18 PM EDT

Hmmm, can regular users see their own statistics as far as how many botchecks they've gotten/missed? Or is that something only admins can see?

As for me, sometimes when I'm feeling froggy, I'll miss one on purpose just to get a new one to add to the collection ;)

Sickone August 18 2011 5:34 PM EDT

Really ? Huh. Go figure...
Felt like a whole lot more.
:)

Phoenix [The Forgehood] August 18 2011 5:48 PM EDT

Can I ask how many I missed?

OT: Sometimes the bottom word will have a g in it and therefore make me think that a t on top is actually an f.

Admiralkiller [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 18 2011 8:43 PM EDT

I mostly miss them from getting up and doing something or going to another tab.

Reyth August 29 2011 5:00 PM EDT

Now that I'm getting bot checks I have found that Ctrl-Mousewheel to maginify the screen a bunch reall helps to see the hard ones.

smallpau1 - Go Blues [Lower My Fees] August 29 2011 5:16 PM EDT

I've also misread 'puft'. Pretty sure thats what the word was.. I agree with the cutting out of words with F's and T's

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 29 2011 5:18 PM EDT

All F's have tails, all T's do not...

Lord Bob August 29 2011 5:19 PM EDT

"Puft" always gets me!

Reyth August 29 2011 6:09 PM EDT

"You've only missed 16 botchecks all year sickone and only 3 of them were because you misread a difficult check (tend/fend, hash/bash, putt/puff), the rest were all typos." Hey Admin, do you have my underwear size?
