Movies I might have missed? (in Off-topic)

j'bob January 9 2012 7:29 PM EST

I just saw Warrior and I have to say, how did I almost miss this movie. If you haven't seen it and aren't put off by a movie about fighting (there's a lot of fighting but it's not JUST about the fighting just so ya know), see it. See it now! It's, in a nutshell, about 2 guys that enter into a big MMA (mixed martial arts) tourney.

Having said that... anyone else have any movies that didn't garner much attention that they feel are must sees?

The Maiden Heist

Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell.

IMDB has it at 4/10, but I loved it.

Warrior got a 10/10 from me. Was a _fantastic_ movie.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was excellent. I recommend it.

The original or the U.S. remake?

'The Peaceful Warrior' .. inspiring enough for me to give up smoking right then and there after smoking for 13 years.
*its not an action film and not an anti smoking flick, one line just made sense to me

Boondock Saints - awesome film (bit of violence with a little bit of cheese ... almost a cult classic but too mainstream).

Man of Fire - Denzil Washington ... a must watch honestly!!!

Queen of the Damned (vampire flick), Accepted (college comedy - one of my favs but not most peoples), Serenity (based on the short lived amazing Firefly seris -SCIFI! at its best), Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Starship Troopers (cheese and cheesy violence at its best), Space Battleship Yamato (a Japanese scifi sleeper with subtitles) and as you liked the Warrior i guess i should mention 'Never Back Down' incase you missed it (MMA around a uni backround).

I liked the Warrior but it didnt live up to the hype for me, the fights were pretty damn cool but the whole inspiring training montage passed with out making me want to hit the gym and i found myself not really caring about any of them much more than i would a character in any other average film.
Fightclub is still my favourite all time film :)

US. I haven't caught the original yet.

Serenity
Absolutely. Watch all of Firefly first, then Serenity. It's amazing.

A great big no for Queen of the Damned though.

IPoop January 10 2012 12:24 AM EST

yeah your prob right about 'Queen of the Damned' (definatly the last bit of the fim anyway) and to be honest as much as i found 'The Peaceful Warrior' inspiring its probably a film you have to be open to change at the moment your watching to get the most from watching it.

Off to watch the Maiden Heist so thanks for this thread :)

I'm not sure how you feel about foreign horror films, but there is a French horror film titled Martyrs that I must recommend. It got a decent amount of exposure in the horror community, but many people haven't heard of it. Just when you think you know where it's going, bam! You have no idea. Happens several times. I will say I like some strange movies and this movie certainly is NOT for everyone. In fact, I think most people (read: normal...lol) won't. But if you at all like horror and are willing to give it a chance, you will be rewarded with a shocking and thought-provoking experience :)

Moon, District 9

Martyrs

One of the best horror movies made.

Other movies in that genre include:

Audition
Inside
Ils
Frontiere

I've seen some of these, I'll seek out others. I'm open to all kinds of stuff. I'm looking forward to The Girl With/Who movies. I really liked the books and REALLY enjoyed the original movie. I can tell I really liked a subtitled movie if when it's done I go, "hey, was that movie subtitled?" :D

T-Beck January 11 2012 2:00 AM EST

That's two for Martyrs :D cool nice to know there's some other horror fans, Ranger. Audition has been in my instant queue on Netflix for awhile now (along with like 40 other movies I'm trying to whittle down, but end up adding more than I watch). I've heard good things. Inside I just came across recently and also looks interesting. I've been slacking lately because I haven't seen any of these yet, unfortunately :/ Is Ils an alternate title for Them? That's all that kept popping up. I've never heard of this one, but one of the reviews said if you like High Tension (aka Haute Tension, another French Horror film), which I did, then you'll probably like this one. I'll have to check these out soon for sure..
