How is this - determined?
(I realize I am taking dmg because I have under base VA)

You yourself stated the reason. You are under base VA and therefore can take damage.
Once you learn it enough to keep it over min level, you will start to leech.
Actually min level will also drain a bit. You need some over min level to start gaining life. I believe it's around level 1500.

I think AK was asking not why he was losing HP, but how the amount of HP lost was determined. Why [-11]?
It's a % of the damage done. The lower the level of va without hitting below 0 the higher the % of damage done to yourself.
I don't actually want to drain life I don't want to incorporate it into my strategy. I want to understand how the negative HP's work and how to maximize them best.
Don't ask me why. It's unimportant anyway.

i believe the lowest VA that would give you leech was 3000+-, under that would get you negative leech? :S
