Microsoft's last stand...
I don't see this competing for a number of reasons, the biggest of them is Microsoft's inability to market to consumers powerfully.
They aren't doing anything different that they've done with all their recent consumer offerings so far, and outside of the xbox line we know how those have gone.
The operating system running on both the ARM and Intel based systems is largely unproven. I'll be waiting to see if they finally get system management out of the hands of the end user. I've seen no evidence of a capability for this yet. Apple (and even Google's Android to a lesser extent) are amazing at getting the computer out of the way and giving users the applications they want. This is the primary reason I suggest Apple hardware to people like my Mother. The amount of time I have to spend helping is minimal.
A UI redesign with larger icons isn't going to give them a share of the consumer market, and with businesses suffering under the weight of old style IT I'm concerned that Microsoft is going to miss the boat and be left behind when it comes to the next generation of the bring your own device office.
