There are some right donuts around.

Jason Bourne July 4 2005 12:47 PM EDT

what a loser...people like that should have their rights taken away and put in an asylum. i hate people that sue for stupid stuff like that, it makes the whole system look bad.

AdminShade July 4 2005 12:50 PM EDT

300 mil is just too much

Jason Bourne July 4 2005 12:59 PM EDT

yea, what is the basis for 300m anyways? maybe if it was 1m..maybe

Yah, I can understand "Hey, you screwed over my job." Unfortunatly, I doubt this person owns said comit. But who does? I wonder how owning stuff in space works? Is it yours if you can lay claim to it and defend it? Won't be far off now before that's possible.

My theory is that McDonalds in Moskow just ran out of coffee, and this was plan B...

I read about this before I saw this post. It turns out she tried to sue long before this but NASA ignored it and and the courts rejected, for obvious reasons. IMO, I would like to know why she gets the money, it's not like she owns the comet. If she wins, then I think she should give me the money for the grief I've suffered by reading about her pointless struggle.

Undertow July 4 2005 5:04 PM EDT

Does NASA own the comet?

bartjan July 4 2005 5:07 PM EDT

Well, they certainly are the first to put something on it. It's customary to plant a flag on new land. Let the International Law lawyers figure out if that 'NASA' logo on the object is enough to pass as a flag ;)

Really interesting case if you think about it - Religion (or beliefs) vs Science when it comes down to it. I'm sure in todays society, the Plaintiff wont win - but that doesn't mean it wont be an interesting case.

Undertow July 4 2005 5:36 PM EDT

I don't know, I think that the NASA people should at least be like "Yo dude, our bad."

I don't think they even bothered to think about it, and I don't blame them. But I mean, they did just ruin this guys career... at least for this year. Think about how many "2005 Astrology Guide"'s are thrown off by this.

Here are some more examples of stuff like this that could happen:

New weather controller putting meterologists out of work.

Anti-collision road system ends the need for insurance, also halves EMT budget and puts tow truck drivers out of business.

New "happy pills" stop the need for a police force.

All fictional, but you get the idea. Not sue worthy, but man it sucks.

Or like, being a robot with feelings that gets replaced. It's the way of the world, and the subject of many movies.

LumpBot July 4 2005 6:06 PM EDT

To think that they "ruined" this person's career is kind of silly. I could say, "Oh no, police ruin my career of bank roberies, let's sue them."

It is NASA's career to explore and learn more about our solar system.

I think this person is a nut, and deserves nothing since they got all the media attention they'll need for keeping in business ;)

tWIsTEd July 4 2005 6:12 PM EDT

i wanna explore space......

Maelstrom July 4 2005 6:27 PM EDT

Reminds me of the case where a burglar successfully sued the owners of a house he tried to burgle, after he fell through their faulty skylight and broke his leg.
