Observations on the MgS (in General)

Carnt Spall July 17 2005 9:25 PM EDT

I have noticed that my +33 MgS blocks an awful lot more than the 33% magic reduction advertised so I decided to run some tests. I fought Luke several times, these were the results (with irrelevant info removed)

Lukey's Cone of cold hit Eater Of Other Bad Stuff [16393], Eater Of French Toast [22564]
Lukey's Cone of cold hit Eater Of Other Bad Stuff [31269], Eater Of French Toast [64722]
Lukey's Cone of cold hit Eater Of Other Bad Stuff [25012], Eater Of French Toast [63518]
Lukey's Cone of cold hit Eater Of Other Bad Stuff [31841], Eater Of French Toast [32822]
Lukey's Cone of cold hit Eater Of Other Bad Stuff [17813], Eater Of French Toast [52017]
Lukey's Cone of cold hit Eater Of Other Bad Stuff [13991], Eater Of French Toast [24072]
Lukey's Cone of cold hit Eater Of Other Bad Stuff [27444], Eater Of French Toast [57453]
Lukey's Cone of cold hit Eater Of Other Bad Stuff [31062], Eater Of French Toast [63299]
Lukey's Cone of cold hit Eater Of Other Bad Stuff [25212], Eater Of French Toast [63589]
Lukey's Cone of cold hit Eater Of Other Bad Stuff [29189], Eater Of French Toast [45454]

Eater of Other Bad Stuff is my MgS tank and Eater of French Toast is my TBF tank, both had the same "+" AC when I did this test.

The average damage sustained by my MgS tank was 24922.6 and 48951 for my TBF tank. This gives a magic reduction of 50.9%, far more than 33% and probably outside the realms of random error for a sample this size.

This means that either the MgS does not work as we think it does or the MgS is buggy and is giving a flat 50% reduction regardless of size.

I'd love to see someone else do the same test with a different sized MgS and see what results they get.

did you figure in the extra ACyour tank has? the+ AC points help block some DD damage.

Carnt Spall July 17 2005 9:34 PM EDT

Yes both had the same "+" AC when I did the test.

From the Wiki:
"It absorbs up to 2.2k points of damage per enchantment level, with a minimum absorption of 1% per enchantment level. This reduction is capped at 50% of the damage dealt"

I read this as:
A +1 MgS will absorb 1% of magic damage up to a maximum of 2.2k damage.
A +30 MgS will absorb 30% of magic damage up to a maximum of 66k damage.
The MgS will never absorb more than 50% of damage.

Am I reading this right here? Looking again it does say "a minimum absorption of" so my thinking could be off.

so your MgS is large enough that it absorbs 50% of the damage done it makes perfect sense to me. so its absorbing more than 33% which is the minimum but less than 2.2k per + on it.

Carnt Spall July 17 2005 10:19 PM EDT

Ah yes I understand now. Thanks

QBRanger July 17 2005 10:19 PM EDT

2.2 times your +33 MgS is over 65k. So your shield is absorbing the max it can which is 50%.

The extra .9% may be due to armor differences. Remember that only the + on the armor not the whole AC is used for magical damage.

Therefore a Adam thats 40+10 is not equal to a MCM thats 28+22. The MCM is far more effective in that example vs magical damage.

Gasp!! I'm in a test!!!

*Lukey begins to cry*

I..I..I'm so honored...

Moral of this story is simple. Next time you make a post exactly like this one you should take this sentence:

"Eater of Other Bad Stuff is my MgS tank and Eater of French Toast is my TBF tank, both had the same "+" AC when I did this test."

and do this to it:

"Eater of Other Bad Stuff is my MgS tank and Eater of French Toast is my TBF tank, both had the same "+" AC when I did this test!!!!!!"

This way people can stop asking an already answered question. :)

i am not sure if the max is at 50% i have look at the changelog.

Max is 50% because Jonathan thinks it is too expensive otherwise, as far as I can tell.

GSV, you ever watch Red Dwarf? You sounded like Kryten correcting Cat when he made a silly observation. *smile*
