Does Decay work with a Mage Shield? (in General)

Does Decay still cast normally when using a Mage Shield?

The mage shield reduces it to base - which works normally. The only thing raising decay above base does is decrease amf reduction.

Perhaps I need to clarify my intentions for this thread:

Decay still works with a Mage Shield, it will be a base 0/1000 Decay, but still doing damage.
Fireball, Cone of Cold and Magic Missile casting at 0 will do no damage.

so a Mage Shield doesn't have a 100% magic penalty after all, and in my opinion it would be sort of an exploit to have Decay (being a very powerful spell, especially for higher mpr characters) to still work.

Imagine a wall living up to melee rounds and starting to cast decay in addition to blocking lots of damage.

However: put a nice AMF opposite of it and you have a wall that damages itself hugely...

hmmm

QBJohnnywas October 9 2005 4:33 PM EDT

When used versus Decay, the damage inflicted is based upon the AMF % multiplied by 1/2 opponents Hit Points at time of casting.

From the WIKI.

It's very very easy to nullify base decay - it only takes a tiny AMF. And a wall is next to useless if it loses half it's HP in one hit.

I had decay on my wall for a time - which was fine as most of my opponents have DM. But against anybody with AMF and I lost my wall in the first two rounds of melee. Not a good thing for a wall!

But it's not the only thing that a mage shield doesn't completely nullify. The shield actually reduces spells to base: on most that is ZERO. But protection at base casts at (4). So you can put a base protection on a wall as well...

AdminShade October 9 2005 4:37 PM EDT

hmmm yes you're right.

but a base protection doesn't have the impact a base decay 'could' have.

anyway like I said, a base decay VS puny AMF = byebye wall :)

i thought it reduced it to 0 cuz i put 4000 exp or so in CoC onto my wall and it reduced it to 0 because of the MgS

QBJohnnywas October 9 2005 4:40 PM EDT

What the mage shield seems to do is reduce to base all spells and enchantments, which isn't the same as cancelling them out. Base for DD spells, AS, AMF etc etc is (0). But base decay is (1) and base protection is (4).

AdminShade October 9 2005 4:41 PM EDT

Cone of Cold, Fireball and Magic Missile do damage based on their spell level.

so a lvl 4000 cone of cold with a Mage Shield will have a level of 0 and do 0 damage

Yes,

I have used a base decay on a minion that had a MgS equipped.

That is what I use on my strat and yes Decay does continue to work even when a MgS is equipped. Secondly I do get damaged with the smallest AMF. I receive 1.00 damage from AMF or in other words 1/2 my life off.
