For Mother Earth (optical mouse users only) (in General)

AdminG Beee March 29 2008 8:26 PM EDT

I talked with Jon regarding the thread created a few days ago on Earth Hour and he's agreed to put aside some of his time working on CB changelogs to make a CB gesture of his own. Basically the thread inspired me and I hope it does you too.

Don't worry, you don't need to do anything other than play CB.

Unfortunately unless you have an optical / laser mouse you can't really contribute - I'm sure you'll find an alternative way to "make your difference" though.
Here's what we need you to do if you are an optical mouse user.

NB. This is advanced warning - don't waste your time following these instructions until whacky EXP time on Tuesday. Nothing will be in place to support this effort until then. Idea behind the advanced post is to give Jon a chance to iron out any bugs or deal with any issues some of you may think about before the event.
That's it - simple as that. Once you have counted your keystrokes through the whole 6 hour whacky period post your number on this thread. Jon can then calculate approximate energy saved from the optical mouse movements that would have occurred and make an appropriate financial contribution.

With luck this exercise could become an annual event and may even rival the overall generosity shown each year with our childs play charity collection.

Don't different mice take different amounts of energy?

Dude, it sucks that I do not own on optical mouse, because this idea ROCKS. Granted, it's a small thing to do, but hey, the intention behind it is commendable. (Noble, even?) Anything that has CB doing it's part for the well-being of everyone is awesome.

Kudos to you.

Hehe. Good to know G Bee. Thanks.

Monsieur P - Don't feel bad, if you don't have an optical mouse then you're doing good every time you click!

I just wanted to test this out by trying to navigate through CB without a mouse, and it's definitely something you can do without too much difficulty. But as a refresher to those out there who haven't ever used keystrokes in windows, it's fairly easy, let this be your refresher course:

KeystrokeDescription
[Tab]Use this to move forward through all the clickable elements on a web page.
[Shift]+[Tab]Use this to move backwards through all the clickable elements on a web page.
[Enter]This is the equivalent to clicking the left-mouse-button.
[Space]This lets you select checkboxes on a web form.
[Ctrl]+[Space]In windows explorer, lets you select multiple non-consecutive files.
[Shift]+[Space]In windows explorer, lets you select multiple consecutive files.
[Ctrl]+[Tab]This switches between different tabs in most browsers that have tabs.
[Alt]+[Tab]This switches between different programs in windows.
[Ctrl]+[T]This creates a new tab in Firefox and some other browsers.
[Alt]This pulls up the menu for most any program you are using.
[Ctrl]+[F4]This closes the currently selected tab in most all browsers.
[Alt]+[F4]This closes the currently selected application.
[Alt]+[Left-Arrow]This is the keyboard equivalent of the Back button in most all browsers.
[Alt]+[Right-Arrow]This is the keyboard equivalent of the Forward button in most all browsers.
[Ctrl]+[Up-Arrow] or [Down-Arrow]This selects a different search engine in firefox, if you have the search box in the upper right hand corner selected.

I usually fight the whole way though with only my keyboard anyway. Unfortunately, my mouse port is in a tedious to get out position (As is anything else in there, which is why I can't be bothered fixing a few broken things).
The only button I actually use for CB is the enter key on my numpad until I get a botcheck. Well... until I actually do something other than fight in the game, which isn't that often.

Relic March 30 2008 11:47 AM EDT

I use an optical mouse and do not use my mouse at all during fighting other than to set the fight focus.

I'm with Glory.

AdminG Beee March 31 2008 1:57 PM EDT

Don't forget to get your counting heads on for the 6hr period through whacky EXP time.

PS. Yes Flamey but as I said, "Jon can then calculate approximate..."

AdminShade March 31 2008 2:26 PM EDT

I'm already only using my keyboard :p

[LittleRed]Calynne March 31 2008 9:25 PM EDT

My optical mouse is battery operated... does this mean I dont count?

drudge April 1 2008 1:23 PM EDT

roughly 420 keystrokes using TAB and ENTER and botchecks and checking out my money and trained exp.... that was a lot of work!

...i accidently left my mouse plugged in tho

Wasp April 1 2008 1:33 PM EDT

I always use my laptop whenever I can. That burns less energy then a standard computer, right??

drudge April 1 2008 2:04 PM EDT

i dont want to be the only one that counted! come on people!

N0seBLeeD April 1 2008 2:57 PM EDT

472. Give or take. ^.^ 160 ba.

BootyGod April 1 2008 3:08 PM EDT

Oh, wow... Umm.... Put me down for a thousand. Barely halfway through my BA too. After 1000 my crappy wheel mouse became way annoying so I want back to my good mouse =(

I click alot to check things. Going through wiki, checking fightlist. Etc, etc.

BootyGod April 1 2008 3:12 PM EDT

Odd. I think I got this really wrong in my head. I did one part right, but another part wrong. BAH. *cries*

I'm taking mass transit for a week to punish myself.

BootyGod April 1 2008 3:17 PM EDT

Did it the right way this time. Only had enough BA for about 200 keystrokes.

DrAcO5676 [The Knighthood III] April 1 2008 6:41 PM EDT

878 Keystrokes
