T28: Stop Being Greedy, SNK4R! (in Contests)
SNK3R
April 29 2008 8:01 PM EDT
This tournament will begin May 3rd, 12:00 PM and end on May 10th, 12:00 PM.
This tournament is extraordinarily simple (with a cheesy storyline -- hey, I'm bored!):
SNK4R has been greedy lately. All he wants to do is have all of the rares for himself. SNK4R is on the verge of crashing the CB economy and there won't be any rares left! Help save CB's economy by making as much money as possible during the tournament. This money will be sent to Jonathan, which will (in effect) bribe Jonathan to ban SNK4R's greediness. (Sweet justice!)
So, if you missed it:
The Goal:
- Obtain as much money as possible. The richest person at the end of the tournament wins! (Easy, right?)
Dude, SNK4R, who are you kidding? WHAT ARE THE DAMN PRIZES!?
- First Place:
- A Tattoo of Endurance lvl 1,540,150 27,936,667
- A Cornuthaum [0] 35,000
- $6,000,000 CB
- Second Place:
- A Rune of Enlightenment lvl 20 11,030
- A Pair of Elven Boots [10] (+21) 828,271
- $3,000,000 CB
- Third Place:
- A Sling of Death [5x35] (+10) 353,159
- A Pair of Displacement Boots [0] (+28) 661,513
- $1,000,000 CB
Rules:
- 3,000 BA limit.
- Auction-selling and auction-purchasing is prohibited at any time in the tournament.
- Everything else is allowed. Be creative!
Some things to think about:
- Should you go straight for a mage, and not spend money on anything to help you win?
- Should you go tank, upgrade some weapons, then whomp on all the lame mages to increase your rewards?
- Be creative to try to get the most money on that tournament character as possible by the end!
Good luck!

3/4 - the fact that the point of the tourney is to SAVE money makes it self-regulating. Think about it for a minute.

I was thinking more along the lines of getting a good deal, or perhaps an underhanded trade (Hey, could you buy this item for say 300k more?). Auctions is the best way to get cash fast :P

Problem:
Since auction selling and buying is banned, the only way to get equipment, most significantly tattoos is to buy from store. Since all tourney players have cooldown while playing from store, what stops other regular players from buying up all the tatts (which were sold) before any tourney players can get them? Also, what about people selling tatts to store just to buy them for their tourney?

lostling,
Direct from the manage chars page: Retired characters may be unretired after not less than 4 days and not more than 9. (This gives you a chance to change your mind.) They will show up here with an option to unretire during and only during that time period.
Retire any of your chars that have no items out to rent and you'll be able to unretire it after the tourney has finished - so long as you retire your touney char first of course. Assuming you have at least one character without the rentals restriction of course.
That would work for you - no ?

It is a strategic move but kind of underhanded. Can always sell it back tho and let bygones be bygones.
Now if you use your tourny character to buy the tats away from people then I don't see a problem.
well, you could have waited 20 minutes to buy one?
Cube
May 3 2008 2:34 PM EDT
Honestly, I think both sides are kind of underhanded. However, I will gladly send the tattoos back at the end of the tournament for free.
Other than that, I'm going to wait until an Admin gives me an answer to what is considered fair.
QBOddBird
May 3 2008 2:38 PM EDT
Of course both paths are fair.
*Be creative to try to get the most money on that tournament character as possible by the end!
Now, the clever thing to do would be to sell them one at a time, and watch to make sure no tourney players are on while you do it.
normally the rules stated in the first post are the only ones to follow. other than that, it is what your conscience allows!

Just a question. I've never payed much attention to the tourneys, this is my first try. My tourney characters "get more" ba is the same price as my NCB character. Does that mean the ba regen rate is the same also (8/20)? If that's the case, is an NUB's extra tourney ba free? Can non NCB characters buy their ba at a regular price?
I understand there is a hard cap of ba to spend but it would seem the difference would be if you could get free or cheap ba you have the advantage of definitely hitting that cap (spending as much as possible when you have the time to do it) where as someone else may not.
This is NOT a complaint post, just wondering. I only note the above paragraph because I figured it might come up in someone's answer.
Thanks!!! :D
You can't buy BA on a tournament character, and your refresh rate should stay at 10/20
Your main character should be unaffected
I'm not sure if you actually can buy ba for a tourney char. But I do know that if you can that is your regular buyable ba. Meaning if you buy for the tourney you can't buy for your regular char.

Ok, I'm REEEEEEALLLLLY sorry to be cluttering up the thread, but it is all in the name of good will toward all.
I tried to check again about the ba with my tourney character but at some point the frame decided to not reload my ba. It confused my regular characters ba (showing) and my tourney characters. Which was interesting because while I still had 41 on my reg character AND it was showing 41 on my tourney char (I even logged out and back in) it wouldn't let me use them because tourney guy was actually down to 0 ba (which was correct).
HOWEVER, when it did finally refresh (tourney char) it appears that NOW I am indeed getting 10/20.
Sigh. I know this was all very confusing and this will be the last post about it.
/me sits in the corner with his dunce cap on and cries

Translation. BA showing can be a little screwy at times, but everything is working properly. In order to see your current BA, have a forgable item (the base weapon you bought to start will work), then go into the forge. you don't even need to spend a BA, just enter the forge, and your proper BA will be there. ^_^

Also, I'm guessing this is already working, but NUBs don't actually get the bonus do they? Because this is what the character page says.

Cube - forging during a tourney cuts out of your BA cap. I did this last tourney and barely won due to coming up 44 battles short of the cap. :)
From the wiki page on tournaments:
"Decay will not be allowed in most tournaments, unless otherwise stated, assume that decay may not be trained."
I notice that a bunch of teams (or at least a few notable ones) are using Decay this tournament. I see no rule stating specifically that Decay may be used. Come to think of it, I don't recall having seen a tournament thread say that in a while. Should the wiki be updated, as this seems to be no longer true?
Just a concern I have. I don't mean to get anyone DQed.

"some play fair, some play to win."
AFAIK, everyone played fair. Rule #3: "Everything else is allowed. Be creative!"
...and yes, each time I decided to do something creative, I cleared it with SNK4R first. I sent Hejin II off to MrsDi to ensure that I got the highest SCORE in the tourney - I already had won #1 in money.
i was merely speaking in generalities, if you are cool with how you played, why are you so defensive?
i will add however, that leniency in certain matters means that those who do not ask or feel that certain things are just wrong, such as buying tats with your main so that others can not have them, will eventually lead to tournaments being a competition to see who can bend the rules the most.
those wanting a fair playing field and to see who can come up with the best strategy for a given circumstance will likely stop playing entirely. personally i am not ready to give up yet on tourneys, but each tourney out of the last five or so have made me more likely to do just that at some point in the future rather than sticking around and having a good time.
i take more issue with tournament management at this point though than players. there will always be those who want to push the limits, whether they are allowed to do so is where the problem lies.
QBOddBird
May 10 2008 2:57 PM EDT
I was defensive because this line, which came after a reference to me:
"similar things have happened in all the tourneys so far. some play fair, some play to win."
insinuates that someone was playing unfairly. If that wasn't your intention, then my apologies I misunderstood.
my intentions were more to take issue with tat management in tourneys more than anything else. i have made a suggestion that in tourneys where tats are allowed, we each are given a lesser we can reink and that is our only option, so i will leave it at that.
as you stated, the other thing had no bearing on this tourneys results, when someone does it again and it does have an impact though what happens then?
QBRanger

"my intentions were more to take issue with tat management in tourneys more than anything else. i have made a suggestion that in tourneys where tats are allowed, we each are given a lesser we can reink and that is our only option, so i will leave it at that."
I completely agree. This is the one thing preventing me from doing tourneys. It becomes who can get the largest tattoo quickest.
I would state that in your scenario, where we are given a lesser tattoo to start, we are also given the free 1 time re-ink option on the first day. And of course, preventing T characters from buying tattoos in auctions or selling them.

Get over it dudemus, you got owned. I say props to OB for coming up with a creative advantage that fits within the given tourney rules.
Cube
May 10 2008 3:08 PM EDT
That sounds like a solid solution to the tattoo problem.
to clarify once again, the reason i am not ready to give up on tourneys is that i think this is a process we need to go through to create a more fair tourney system. it is the "creative" folks pushing the limits that will bring about issues where fairness can be achieved. where i will give up is when i see that we aren't actually moving in a "more fair" direction.
with that being said, i also propose this be added to tourney rules for future ones:
transfer of characters are not allowed during tourneys. self-policed by the community and admins so jon needs do nothing extra. if someone transfers beforehand, we can always see that in their fight logs and also benefit from it.
QBOddBird
May 10 2008 3:10 PM EDT
If someone else intends to do it with an effect that has an impact on the tourney's results, I would suggest that they do as I did and ask the Tournament admin first, of course.
I wouldn't have done anything that risked DQ'ing me, and I felt safe in doing this because it had no bearing on my final ranking. However, if it had the potential to affect a win/loss situation, I would either ask the T-admin and request a straight answer as to how legal it was or I would simply refrain from doing so altogether. :P
I assume all the other tournament players would do so as well.
Cube
May 10 2008 3:11 PM EDT
I don't really see an issue with transferring characters, maybe if the tournament is score based, but otherwise I don't think it's a huge problem especially since everyone will find that transfered character within 20 minutes if you are fighting it.
QBRanger
May 10 2008 3:12 PM EDT
In the interest of fairness, I cannot see many people complaining about that new rule.
However, in this particular tourney, there was a "no holds barred" type of rule.
OB may have stretched the rules, but that is what SNK was actually looking for.
For other, more conventional tourneys, things like gifting characters so you can have a great target should certainly not be allowed.
As well as having a "friend" attack you numerous times to "gift" you money and xp. That is one things I have a huge issue with.

While you did play it safe OB talking with the tourney admin first, imo that should not be necessary given the rules were clearly stated before the tourney began.

"I don't really see an issue with transferring characters, maybe if the tournament is score based, but otherwise I don't think it's a huge problem especially since everyone will find that transfered character within 20 minutes if you are fighting it."
if someone were to wait until later to start their character, and then not fight the transferred character until the last 100 battles or so it could have an impact on the results, score-based or mpr-based. that was my concern.
There's also a whole page of tourney rules to begin with that went entirely unignored in the first place...
Not sure why all the railing on OB though... Only thing he really accomplished with the store thing and the char transfers was to increase the margin of the victory he already had... He was on track to beat out first place, and the only reason he could have been passed was by my disenchanting...
Besides, is absolute randomness any better than sneakyness for determining a winner?
or is G Beee the only one allowed to sell rares to the store? :P
"Not sure why all the railing on OB though.."
i went back through the posts to see what you were referring to and i really do not see anyone railing on OB. is this going on in chat or something?

You had the time to make the post - you've been coming online and posting - so you had the time to send the prizes, SNK4R. It's been 2 weeks. There's a WHOLE NEW TOURNAMENT THREAD.
And that annoying 'retaliatory' attitude really gets on my nerves, especially when you abuse your powers due to your little quirks. "Just because you said something I don't like, I'll withhold the tournament prizes for another player."
Here's another example: You decide to /ignore me for a week. When it comes off, we're back to pals and you wanna talk. Then I disappear for a few days, you get pissed, and won't talk to me when I return. So I /ignore you, since you won't talk and are ignoring me. You kick me. I kick back, and you /kill me. There's a difference between a kick and a /kill, SNK4R.
Here's another example! You make a bot that repeats everyone's lines as l33t spam, someone complains, you completely quit Chat. Yet another "I won't do it anymore!" tantrum.
You make a contest, get some flak mixed with criticism for it (I got flak as well, but I wasn't saying let's never have another contest) and you say "I'm never doing this again!"
You got flak for the QB process, and yet again, we have SNK4R saying "I'm done with this forever!"
I even found a CB1 thread where people didn't follow the line of conversation you wanted exactly or directions or something, and sure enough, "I'm quitting this."
You get pissed at another player over a chat conversation, you fine them their money jokingly or chatban then? It's complete admin powers abuse.
As is your tradition, I'm sure this will result in another "I can't believe I got criticism! I'm quitting doing any tournaments forever!" trip, as well. Unless, of course, by me saying so you decide not to simply to annoy me.
Fact is, I put up with your crap. I talk to you even though when you get butthurt, you /ignore, /kick, or /kill. I try and empathize with you even when you do retarded things like entirely quit Chat because you got a little criticism for your bot that repeated everything someone said as l33t.
But I'm not going to just keep acting like it doesn't bug me, SNK4R - it does. Hell, I can't even get my tourney prize because you're too lazy to hand it out on time, and if I bring up that you might be too busy and another admin can handle it, you take the time to post that you'll do it yourself without doing it yourself!!!
Sorry man, but I can't be your friend if it means I have to act like a freakin' counselor, babysitter, and psychologist. I swear, you're driving me up the wall.
If you can do your job as an admin, do it. If you can hand out those prizes, hell, the tournament's been over for over 2 weeks, you might as well hand them out already. If you can act like a proper player without abusing what responsibility you've been given, then do it.
But if you don't have the time - if you truly are too busy - if you really can't control your wild impulses - then hand off the responsibility.
'Course, I don't expect that kind of maturity from you, but I'm making the suggestion nonetheless.

I suspect in the case of "Get Bent" SNK is referring to diving.
When one comes up for air without decompressing, one can get "the Bends". Which is an incredible painful condition which can lead to death.
Something very nice for an admin to say to another player.
BTW:
OB ROCKS!!!

Thank you, SNK4R. :)
Ranger --
My searching shows that "get bent" is actually much worse than you describe. It is a way of telling someone to bend over and get sodomized.
That's the tamest of the definitions I found.
SNK, you always go too far with your tantrums. You have out done yourself this time. You owe Ranger and all of CB an apology.

No apology to me is needed.
I have frequently done the same. Things happens.

Brent goes too far way too often....
Thanks CB for piling on to a guy like a pack of wolves.
Whatever the situation, the way the this was handled was weak.
