RPG recommendations: PS2/PC (in Off-topic)

QBJohnnywas February 5 2009 7:40 AM EST

Ok, I'm after something fairly specific: an old fashioned RPG, in a Lord of The Rings kind of universe, wizards, warriors, elves etc. PS2 preferably, but point me in the direction of the PC so long as it's nothing overly graphics intensive.

I'm not looking for online play: I know where to go for those.

Ariac February 5 2009 9:08 AM EST

Baldur's Gate 1 $ 2 for PC
Icewind Dale 1 $ 2 for PC
Planescape: Torment for PC
(All of which are interplay games and interplay was one of the best damn gaming companies around)
I personally am a fan of wizardry on ps2. First person and you control up to 6 guys at once, but it's a lot of fun... even though the story is a bit lacking.
The Kings Field games are all really good for ps2.
The .hack games are fantasy-esque... also on ps2.
Diablo 1 for playstation/PC and diablo 2 are both good games even if you don't play them online.
Gothic 1-3. Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall are more good PC games...
So a list!
PS2:
Kings Field (1 and 2 were on ps1)
Wizardry
Diablo 1 (ps1)
.hack series maybe?

PC
Baldur's Gate 1 $ 2
Icewind Dale 1 $ 2
Planescape: Torment
Diablo 1 $ 2
Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall

I think my favourite RPG that hasn't already been mentioned would be Grandia 2. I played it on PC, but its also available on PS2.
The third is on PS2, but never came out in my stupid country.
The stories are all independent, so you needn't play 1 to play 3, etc.

They are JRPGs, but if you can forgive them for that, then you might like them.

I've been playing Spellforce 2 a fair bit lately. It's RTS+RPG, except that its actually combined in a REALLY, REALLY good way. You have traditional RPG sections that feel like RPG sections, not like RTS hero unit sections and RTS sections that are pretty good, but you can change between the two seamlessly, with everything done with the same interface. I bought the first game because I really liked the second, but haven't gotten to playing it yet. The first is on GOG for $7. Both are PC, but not too intensive.

It was already said, but.... Play Planescape Torment. Seriously. Do it. In fact, leave work right now and find a copy to play. (Don't leave work. You might get fired)

Diablo II ;)

Marlfox [Cult of the Valaraukar] February 5 2009 12:08 PM EST

Planescape: Torment is great; Fallout 1 & 2 are also very good. ;)

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 5 2009 12:12 PM EST

Seconded Torment. ;)

I'd also say give Shadow of the Colossus and ICO on the PS2 a try. They aren't RPGs, per-say, more like action/adventure games, but believe me, they are absolutely incredible.

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] February 5 2009 12:24 PM EST

Morrowind for PC, if you haven't played it you will love it, I promise.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] February 5 2009 1:04 PM EST

I didn't really like Morrowind. :o

Soul Eater February 5 2009 1:09 PM EST

As for the PS2 I'd have to say A Bard's Tale, .Hack// is a great series of games, Xenosaga is pretty good I've got all 3 games. The Dragon Quest Series. Beyond Good & Evil is another good one.

Haloki February 5 2009 1:13 PM EST

If you havn't played Gladius I highly recommend it, its by lucas arts but isn't a star wars game :)

Soul Eater February 5 2009 1:29 PM EST

A Bard's Tale is pretty funny too.

Soul Eater February 5 2009 1:30 PM EST

Oh ya and for PC the Thief Games are pretty fun.

AdminShade February 5 2009 1:55 PM EST

Any of the old games like Baldur's Gate I and II and Icewind Dale I and II and Planescape Torment are just great.

I must admit finishing all of these games at least 3 times and would start them again if I only could crank up their resolution a bit...

Anyway, a new Baldur's Gate themed game is on it's way :D

BadFish February 5 2009 2:27 PM EST

Let's not forget Neverwinter Nights 1&2. I bought 2 and my comp couldn't run it, but i've played the heck out of 1 and its awesome.

QBJohnnywas February 5 2009 6:40 PM EST

Thanks AG for reminding me of Morrowind. I bought it at the time for it's full price, but my PC was below par to run it, so I ended up taking it back.

Now I can buy it for a tiny amount, including all the expansion packs, and run it on a cheap laptop. Technology eh?

Anyway, it's pretty much what I wanted! Thanks for that. And thanks for the other suggestions everybody.

Hakai [Aye Phelta Thi] February 5 2009 6:56 PM EST

I find it insulting that not a single person has mentioned a single Final Fantasy game! Hehe

QBJohnnywas February 5 2009 7:00 PM EST

Lol, does anybody need to recommend FF?

iBananco [Blue Army] February 5 2009 7:44 PM EST

It's not fantasy, but I just have to mention it. Do yourself a huge favor and play Cave Story.

Zenai [Cult of the Valaraukar] February 5 2009 8:24 PM EST

If you want to go a bit old school the on the PS1 I highly suggest Xenogears.....its long but it is prolly one of the best games I have ever played barnone! Parasite Eve 1&2 is not far from it at least in story line gameplay is a little weird. The FF series is Mostly Fantastic, 7 is imo the best one so far. I am playing FF12 (of and on)so I dont have a full opinion on it yet. Planscape Torment is a great game! Baldurs Gate 1&2, Neverwinter Nights 1&2, Diablo II and the LOD Expansion, and Sacred Gold are all pretty good games imo.

Thak February 5 2009 10:07 PM EST

dragon quest was always fun.
then there is always breath of fire

Ariac February 5 2009 10:46 PM EST

Daggerfall > morrowind IMO...

Soul Eater February 5 2009 11:17 PM EST

Oh ya I forgot about Breath of Fire those games rock!

Marlfox [Cult of the Valaraukar] February 6 2009 7:10 AM EST

Ditto, Ariac.
And, how could I forget KotOR and NetHack?
