Inverted Tattoos (in General)

three4thsforsaken May 12 2009 1:40 AM EDT

In a world littered by familiars, I feel the introduction of nonfamiliar tattoos would greatly benefit the game. But where do we start?

What if we gave normal tattoos the versatility of familiars by allowing them to switch to a inverted counterpart? Or maybe we can just introduce a whole bunch of tattoos I call "inverted tattoos".

What is an inverted tattoo? It's a tattoo with it's abilities swapped or twisted, providing new possibilities when building a strat. Some tattoos (especially the defensive ones) show incredible offensive potential but face an interesting detriment when their secondary effects are "inverted".

Note that not all these proposed tattoos are exact opposites of their counterparts as I wrote them with game balance in mind. I wrote the reasoning behind tattoos on the bottom as to not clutter the post.

---------------------------------

Rune of Malice (inverted Rune of Solitude):

adds 50% level to equipped minions EOs
reduces entire teams EDs by 40% tattoo level

---

Tattoo of vigor (inverted Tattoo of Augmentation)

50% level boost to Dex
30% level boost to str
33% tattoo NW boost to footwear (intended for DBs)

---

Tattoo of Balrog Flame (inverted RoBF)

Reduces GA damage and physical damage
Deals 20% tattoo level whenever damaged directly to source (like old cloak)

---

Tattoo of Resistance (inverted Tattoo of endurance)

approaches 40% Direct damage reduction
provides all minions with AP (aura affect)

Yeah, what do you think?

The Rune of Malice's ability to boost EO would be very effective in shutting down a teams offense, and if used properly can provide much potential to challenge up.
That's why it has a detriment to EDs cast by your own team. It prevents a team from mixing the efficiency of EDs with the offense shattering powers of a boosted EO.

The tattoo of vigor creates a more defensive flavor of tank. Combined with DBs you have the ability to add a mini-tank with great dodging potential. Probably wouldn't make a great principle damage dealer unless you invest a ton of your own str. CB needs more dex based characters :D

The Tattoo of Balrog flame isn't meant to be a principle damage source like its rune counterpart. But it creates a great defense for the damage dealer you do have with a little ability to recoil effectively. The GA reduction is the opposite of AMF reduction. I can see this being an interesting choice for VA based tanks.

Tattoo of Resistance is nothing too interesting. I feel AP is more useful for an antimage tattoo because of SG.

the Vigor tat would be used by a single mage with dbs and evasion

OR, even better! you could get some BoF and AoL with the tattoo of vigore and try to get your leadership up enough for an instant 1 hit KO with decay! :D

Untouchable May 12 2009 2:38 AM EDT

I dig

Eliteofdelete [Battle Royale] May 12 2009 2:43 AM EDT

Or I guess you could also go for a CoC so big that it 1 hitted the entire team. xD

Pwned May 12 2009 2:46 AM EDT

but you still have to wait for melee combat

Wizard'sFirstRule May 12 2009 3:55 AM EDT

I like to see weird combination of abilities.
Like:
33% boost to STR, 20% boost to DX, 20% boost to DD (CoC archer anyone?)

or

trains 100% XP in FB on tattoo holder (so you can boost it just by training more FB, overwrites other DD), 25% direct damage prevention aura. (so you sort of get around the penalty of fireball, but still fries them a bit)

Instead of pointing out the problems with the tattoos (which I thought up in like 5 minutes) try giving some constructive criticism about the concept of inverted tattoos in general.

Do you think this game could benefit from inverted tattoos? Or just new tattoos in general? Do you think strats that require normal tattoos will benefit with this strat flexibility?

I feel looking at inverted tattoos is a good place to start looking at what new tattoos could be like without stepping too deep in uncharted waters.

Brakke Bres [Ow man] May 12 2009 5:46 AM EDT

yeah I love the vigor tattoo.

Lets a mage or a tank train evasion and use a huge pair of EBS add 33% of nw to the EBS to boost evasion even more and you get the free dex requirement from the tattoo. And you get free encumbrance from the tattoo making evasion mage very powerful. Ow I can hear Ranger complain already about it.

tattoo of vigor = elven tattoo? It's pretty much the tattoo of evasive tanks. I like it!

Maybe give it elven qualities (ie dex and skill bonus) rather than the 50% dex level boost? Elven qualities + the ST boost would make it a pretty good tattoo for UC guys and girls?

BootyGod May 12 2009 8:55 AM EDT

I like these ideas, actually. I like most new ideas though :P I really like them all, the more I think about it.

three4thsforsaken May 12 2009 12:25 PM EDT

Another interpretation of an inverted ToA might involve adding the NW to the X instead of the PTH. But personally, I feel the footwear boost is more interesting.

I want to see more dexterity and finesse in our tanks :D. Such a tank would probably be more melee orientated using BL as a way to deal damage regardless of less str.

Does anyone have any other ideas of what an inverted tattoo would be like?

How about this:

---
Rune of (insert word here) (inverted Rune of Enlightenment)

Equipped minion receives no exp. Other minions receive the exp this minion would have gained.

---

This would be useful for a 2 minion setup. Equip it to your killslot and it allows for your big minion to grow in exp concentration while still using body armor and a cloak.

Lovely Idea. ;) Would give me a two minion set up with a 20HP anti Decay minion while keeping Single minion concentration and letting me use a TSA (and MGS on the 20 HP minion).

I wants. ;)

AdminTal Destra May 12 2009 12:33 PM EDT

Rune of Ineptness (Inverted Rune of Enlightenment)

Untouchable May 12 2009 8:45 PM EDT

bump so admins can take a gander

Marlfox [Cult of the Valaraukar] May 12 2009 9:15 PM EDT

I like them. But, methinks, the Known Issue page comes first.

three4thsforsaken May 13 2009 4:00 PM EDT

But I want new stuff now!

QBRanger May 13 2009 4:03 PM EDT

Rune of Ruin.

Once a week changes into a random familiar/rune/tattoo. Has 50% more experience than normal. Cannot be changed by the tattoo artist. Does not change to RoE.

Grows at normal rate.
