I believe you can get reduced rewards if someone else fought them just before you did, and did most of the work.
So if someone leaves them with 1 HP, and you fight them, you wont get much for it.
I have run into the same bro, this is why I have learned to pay very close attention when I am clicking away. As soon as I start seeing the rewards going down I stop and inspect if someone else is fighting I stop and let them finish. I might as well pay attention if the next guy wont :/

It is as Daz says.
Check your opponents battle log. You will see someone lost to them just before you attacked. They did not have a chance to heal and took heavy damage from the first attack.
Since you only took out a portion of their character, you only get rewards for that amount.
