Why I hate moving (rant enclosed) (in Off-topic)

So, I promise to keep this PG somehow....

I am in the midst of moving and the term 'unmitigated disaster' is beginning to come up all to often in casual conversation.

Time line:

Sept 18th:
Sign lease with move in date of Sept 25th.
The lease included an addendum with a pro-rated payment for the additional days in September.

Sept 22nd:
Receive call from rental agency claiming the re-painting of the apartment was a little behind and there is an issue with doing the move in on the 25th... may be a couple days.

Finally get it agreed that we'll get the keys on the 25th and they'll have the painting 98% done by the end of Saturday and finish up on Monday so we can move in on Tuesday.

Sept 27th
Visit apartment which is supposed to be 98% ready... seems more like 90% but heck, they'll finish up on the 28th right?

Sept 28th
My folks came down (3hr drive) for a visit and to help with moving. Arrange rental of moving van for the 29th... spend day getting things packed up and ready to go.

7:00pm... visit new apartment to check out finished paint job.... AND...

THE APARTMENT IS NO WHERE FREAKING NEAR READY.... actually looks worse than the day before. Call rental agent who apparently had no clue that the painting was unfinished.

So... in conclusion.

My new apartment won't likely be habitable fully until the 30th. I am seriously contemplating introducing 'apoplectic rage' into the lexicon of a certain rental agent... at very least I am getting back every penny of the extra money I paid for the september usage.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed that... I haven't devolved to profanity or violence as yet!

I just spent two weeks and $1500 moving .... still waiting for phone service.

I will say this since I have been on both ends of this equation bro. Sometimes the Rental Agency has no clue what the Remodeling Contractors are doing and Vice Versa and all of it is tied into Red Tape. One cannot move or do anything without the go ahead of the other :-/

To say Moving in any other word I will say: GAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

That should sum it up.....lol

PS: Since I was a Mover for a while and I can fit a 3 bedroom House in a 24ft Box Truck all of my friends call me to help when they are moving. Don't ask sometimes I don't even know how I manage it, it's a Cursed Gift.

Fortunately it is only a 2 bedroom apartment.

My brother actually spoke to the painters on Saturday and they said they'd finish on Monday.

Anyway, my main issue here is that the rental agent who is running this whole thing seems absolutely clueless.... ah well, I'm trying to not be overly passive aggressive in my dealings with them.

Rental agents are usually a combination of greedy and clueless, Loch. They're oblivious to problems with the unit, but they damn sure know about anything and everything that you can be billed for.

Still, that's moving for you. I've been lucky in that all of my moves were to apartment complexes that catered to students and adhered to strict in/out schedules. You'd probably never see your deposit again, but at least you didn't need to worry about your new place being ready.

Is that it? We waited many months for our move. Yours looked like it went smoothly

I just left the best landlords I've ever dealt with. I'm afraid it will go downhill from here if I have to rent again. Seems like a lot of us moving lately.

I'm still unpacking from my move a month ago, and waiting for my deposit cheque from the last landlords. We had similar problems with the condition of the house, but at least our new landlords had finished the day before we moved in.

Shower still doesn't work properly though, and phone and internet took nearly two weeks.

If you're renting through an agency then they don't own the property and usually have no contact with it except for viewings.
All they do is send your complaint on to the landlord who is usually the greedy pain in the backside.
When I moved here in March there was no hot water, it took a fortnight to eventually get a new boiler, we had to use the shower of the unoccupied flat upstairs during that time.
It took another week after the washing machine completely bust before he got a new one as he apparently needed his people to check 3 times to make sure.
Finally, when we moved in the spring mattress was already annoyingly lumpy and almost impossible to be comfy on yet he refuses to replace it, it has been 6 months now.
I'd say you've been very lucky so far and even if you do have a problem, don't go mental with the agent. If their requests haven't been met by the landlord, get his or her contact details and unleash your rage directly onto them.
