10M Prize: Help me with Camera/Computer Recording! (in Contests)

QBPixel Sage December 18 2009 10:52 PM EST

Hey all. So, one of my latest toys is a Canon T1i. It's a camera that records HD video, which is super awesome.

I also use a Mac. I'd like to use iMovie to record videos, but I want to record these videos using my T1i, straight into iMovie. When I try to connect my camera to my computer via USB, my camera basically just shuts off and thinks that I'm importing pictures, and iMovie doesn't detect the T1i.

The T1i has three outputs - One is for a controller, the other is the USB (labelled A/V OUT DIGITAL), and the last one is HDMI OUT. My Mac can take USB, Firewire 800, among some other inputs...

$CB 10M to the person who can help me solve this! Whether it be helping me apply some correct settings, or getting the right cable... help!

What mac? Can you take an expansion card? If so you then need to buy an HDMI video card from a company like BlackMagic Design which will give you HDMI input from you video camera.

It's a great camera btw... I own one as well and love it except for the fact that you cannot shoot video in broad daylight with a video tap so that you can view what you are shooting! Works fine for basic family stuff though.

HDMI capture card + HDMI cable = fixed.

You'll need an HDMI mini to HDMI cable as the connector on the T1i is a mini.

I'll probably be splitting the prize a little bit =P. Anyways, I have a MacBook Pro, 15". Is there any hope for me?

Have you tried contacting Canon if they have information about this problem?

iBananco [Blue Army] December 25 2009 3:56 PM EST

Looks like the 15" doesn't have an ExpressCard slot. Ouch.

QBPixel Sage December 27 2009 6:06 PM EST

@Shade - It's not really a "problem," per say. There's nothing wrong with what I have.
@Bananco - Poo... that's the info I needed. Thanks!
@Viperboy - Ha ha. Ha.

here is a thread regarding getting the video into final cut, it might work though to take it into imovie as well. it sounds like you need to import it into iphoto first though.

I'm pretty sure he wants live input to iMovie. Otherwise, he could just use the USB output.

Thanks to you all for help. Here is my following 10M distribution:

Last Gasp - 9M (thorough explanation)
Bananco - 1M (mentioned cable and that my 15" has no ExpressCard slot)

Thanks guys!
