Refer a friend (in General)

Miandrital January 18 2010 3:59 AM EST

I thought one of the benefits of supportership was no more ads :)

noidraug January 18 2010 4:39 AM EST

It's not exactly a banner :) think of it like a matching service lol

Marlfox [Cult of the Valaraukar] January 18 2010 7:31 AM EST

It is somewhat large... perhaps we could get it shrunk and moved between "Help!" and "Home".

AdminShade January 18 2010 8:04 AM EST

or be removable when you are a supporter?

QBRanger January 18 2010 9:20 AM EST

Tis quite the eyesore.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 18 2010 10:12 AM EST

imho, when you use too many forms of emphasis on text it has the opposite effect of becoming an eyesore.

i would drop the exclamation marks and the asterisks. make it the same size as the text above it (it may be that already, not sure) and then try bold, italic or both but no more emphasis effects than those two.

Flamey January 18 2010 10:27 AM EST

Just lose the marks, Asterisk + bold + size is absolutely fine.

Soxjr January 18 2010 10:35 AM EST

Now are the people complaining about it using their phone a lot and it affects that? because on my browser version it really doesn't affect anything and is a good reminder to try to get more people to the game. Everyone says the game is dying and then wants to get rid of something that can actually maybe get more people here.. Just saying you can't have your cake and eat it too. I personally don't see a problem with it and hope it helps bring more people here.

Admin{CB1}Slayer333 [SHIELD] January 18 2010 10:41 AM EST

It is big for a reason :)

Lord Bob January 18 2010 11:06 AM EST

Tis quite the eyesore.

Agreed.

Yuck.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] January 18 2010 11:45 AM EST

Can we get rid of this? If we refer friends it should be out of willingness, we shouldn't have to be subjected to ugly text that commands us to do it.

Soxjr January 18 2010 12:01 PM EST

It's amazing how something so small can upset so many. it is what? 1/4 of an inch or less of space between help row and your char name. It's not making you click it. it isn't even close to where you click to fight or do anything. It's there to catch peoples eye and maybe get someone to try to HELP this game by attracting new people. It really shocks me that the admins continue to try to keep this game going when anything and everything they do is met with such criticism. This is something that can help the game by attracting more people to the game. it isn't like it's a different color text that just stands out above and beyond everything else, it is just a little bigger and bolder. Nothing more and nothing less, but it is there to help.

I will end with saying. Great addition. I could care less how it looks. I hope it helps bring people to the game.

QBRanger January 18 2010 12:06 PM EST

Wait,

Sox,

You mean your Refer A Friend is not flashing on and off every second in different colors?

[P]Mitt January 18 2010 12:13 PM EST

I don't think it's a problem.

We have long complained about/noticed a decreasing user base, and I personally think we should be thanking the Admins for doing something about it instead of complaining about something that really doesn't affect the way you play or affect your experience.

Kompton Kidd January 18 2010 12:31 PM EST

It really is an eyesore. Makes the simple interface not look so simple.

Flamey January 18 2010 12:41 PM EST

It's just text, want to relax a bit, guys?

Windwalker January 18 2010 12:45 PM EST

What's not to like? Is it in the way? Come on.

kevlar January 18 2010 1:05 PM EST

I'm all in with anything in-game/online that gets results promoting CB.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] January 18 2010 1:26 PM EST

Because there's no reason for it being there?

If I choose to refer people it won't be because there's giant unsightly text in front of my face every second. If I choose not to then the text will not serve as any incentive to do so. And I admit it doesn't get in the way of the game, it's just annoying to look at, like ads. But the only difference is that ads serve some sort of purpose, they raise money for the website, the text does not.

Last Gasp January 18 2010 1:31 PM EST

What a big storm for such a little teapot... :)

One suggestion nothing to do with the link but where it leads... ALl of these numbers should have a "0" added to the end. It's not really worth it to get a referral or two just for that piddly amount of CBD.

If they...

1. Sign up: you get $5,000
2. Finish tutorial: you get an additional $20,000
3. Challenge 300 battles: you get an additional $75,000
4. Become a Supporter: you get an additional $900,000

winner winner January 18 2010 1:33 PM EST

It's not like I don't refer, I try posting referrals on other sites but no one ever joins.

TheHatchetman January 18 2010 1:47 PM EST

Tis quite the eyesore.

Much like the "new" user interface... Caught a much bigger reception of boos than this, now does anyone even remember off the top of their head what the old one even looked like anymore?

If I choose to refer people it won't be because there's giant unsightly text in front of my face every second

Define unsightly? It's been there less than a night and I'm already used to it...

It's not really worth it to get a referral or two just for that piddly amount of CBD.

It is worth it for the sake of CB though, no? 10 seconds to grab and post the link is a lot to ask I know... But it is for the greater good.

AdminNightStrike January 18 2010 1:49 PM EST

LG - done. This will take effect after cache flush (I've stopped restarting the server after every tiny change.. I'm sure a lot of people like that :)

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] January 18 2010 1:54 PM EST

TH - you know what I mean by unsightly. And you picking apart the sentence for one specific word hardly changes the meaning of that sentence. My point is that the text will not be the reason anyone decides to refer people. If you want to argue against that point then go ahead, but I don't want to play a semantics game.

AdminNightStrike January 18 2010 1:55 PM EST

As for the link itself, it's buried away and rarely seen by new players based on server logs. Now, it's more prominent. I could do what most other game sites do and spam it everywhere, with bright flashy highlights and animated gifs... Ok, well, nobody uses those anymore, but you get the idea.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] January 18 2010 2:00 PM EST

I don't think I'd have so much of a problem of it if it were less attention-getting. It could be the same size as the Help! and Home and Settings text, but instead it's large, it's bold, it's got the asterisks, and !!.

TheHatchetman January 18 2010 2:01 PM EST

My point is that the text will not be the reason anyone decides to refer people.

Why do you say that? I've referred at least 40-50 people here... often too lazy or forgetful to grab my link, and they pass through the tutorial. As NS also pointed out, the link was semi-hidden and highly ignored, as seen by maybe a couple hundred referrals over the 5 years that the game is around... That's like what? One referral a week or so?

All in all, if this really is the end of the world and the CB skies are falling... Quitcher

TheHatchetman January 18 2010 2:04 PM EST

I don't think I'd have so much of a problem of it if it were less attention-getting.

The whole point is to be attention-getting. Your eyes will adjust. I'd almost entirely forgotten there was a link to my user until the Refer popped up. This will soon "fade into the background" like everything else has.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] January 18 2010 2:19 PM EST

I don't exactly see what you're trying to accomplish. Are you trying to tell me that my opinion is wrong and somehow try to change my opinion that the excessiveness of the text is too much? Because I doubt you will.

And "quitcher"? What? I don't get the right that everyone else has to post their opinion whenever they aren't happy with something? I'm sorry if you think the right of expression is one that you get to solely enjoy.

TheHatchetman January 18 2010 2:33 PM EST

All I'm saying is wait for the crap to settle at the bottom of the tank before complaining that it got murky for a sec when someone stuck their hand in.

Last Gasp January 18 2010 4:58 PM EST

Thank you NS! :-)

IndependenZ January 18 2010 5:04 PM EST

As for the link itself, it's buried away and rarely seen by new players based on server logs. Now, it's more prominent. I could do what most other game sites do and spam it everywhere, with bright flashy highlights and animated gifs... Ok, well, nobody uses those anymore, but you get the idea.

I totally agree with NS, and I actually like it on the sidebar. Just not on top, above the link to my own profile. I think if you were to move it underneath the fight feed, it'd look better. Quieter. More at ease. Nevertheless, NS, thanks for putting it up there in the first place. Good thinking!

Demigod January 18 2010 5:55 PM EST

Meh, I don't mind it's current location. I'm just glad that the weird second exclamation mark is gone.

BootyGod January 18 2010 8:53 PM EST

I swear, people are far too used to this game for their own good. Your personal happiness with the sidebar, IMO, comes second to the bettering of this game. Sorry if that hurts your pride.

Sorry, but if the cost of bringing in lots more players is annoying to people for now? Well, deal with it. I don't like it either (I can't even see the Fight Feed anymore) But guess what? I want more players. And I dang sure want to see this game bigger over wanting my old sidebar back.

AdminNightStrike January 18 2010 8:57 PM EST

What's your resolution set to that it pushes the fight feed down too far?

QBRanger January 18 2010 9:00 PM EST

GW,

Instead of ranting on people complaining or their thoughts on the change, why do you not read some of the actual threads.

Nobody says the betterment of the game is a bad thing.

However, the current location of the Refer A Friend link is a bit of an eyesore.

For those players who will use it, those already in the game, why does the link need to be at the top? Why not at the bottom, or somewhere in between?

I am very sick of your soapbox moments every time someone does not agree with NS or Jon on something. We, as players, have the right to state our opinions. You seem to believe everything Jon and NS do is perfect and should never be questioned. If that were the case, the game would not have 1/2 the current features it does.

Just imagine if we did that in Real Life with our government. Wow.

Salketer [big bucks] January 18 2010 9:09 PM EST

Buisness links get burried by the chat since the refer a friend link appeared... I'm only at 4 lines too! That gotta go :( Please, NS supporters do know about the referral system and I'm sure most of them know where to grab their link if they need it. Make it possible to turn it off in settings? Plus, the link ain't burried that much, it shows up in the Community menu. I am now missing the links Tattoo artist, Black Market and Rentals. They aren't the links I use the most but still.

May I suggest putting the link on the home page instead? Somewhere at the top to make sure it is visible? That could work pretty fine, and make it an animated GIF if you want, as long as it goes away (or take a lot less space) from my sidebar.

Thanks!

Salketer [big bucks] January 18 2010 9:12 PM EST

Sorry for double post, I thought my resolution info could help out a bit... 1280x800.

And... after some thoughts, if I am part of a very few amount of people that gets this problem, leave it that way I will make a GM script to fix it for me.

QBRanger January 18 2010 9:21 PM EST

Now I seem to have lost both my user homepage link and the referral link.

QBRanger January 18 2010 9:28 PM EST

got it back, false alarm it appears.

BootyGod January 18 2010 9:28 PM EST

"GW,

-------------------------

You're kidding, right?

A) It needs to be at the top to be a constant reminder to players to try and recruit players. And for new players. While I can see why players may not like it, I see no reason for it not to at least temporarily be there, as a way of advertising the new stuff for referrals.

B) When I talk, it doesn't mean I'm on a soapbox. More likely, it means I think you all are doing something ridiculous. Posts consisting of "Yuck" are not helpful.

C) The ideal Republican, Ranger. You quote your right to say what you wish, while complaining that I see what I want! Beautiful. Absolutely magnificent.

Lastly, I understand that Jon and NS are not perfect. Trust me, I complain about tons of things (Jon. Really. The tutorial is -bad-.) But I get sick of the constant knee jerk reactions from people about things like this. Look behind the "It's ugly." to something besides that.

Oh, and since I'm a big fan of "eye for an eye" I'm getting sick of you complaining about my soap boxes. I'm just as entitled to them as anyone.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] January 18 2010 10:04 PM EST

Yes, you're entitled to your opinion as everyone else, but we're not the ones who tell you to stop stating your opinion.

It seems kinda of hypocritical for you to say you are entitled to your opinions but in your previous post you just told us to stop complaining and suck it up. No one is even telling you you're not allowed to complain, you're the one telling us not to complain.

BootyGod January 18 2010 11:09 PM EST

Let's assume all I did was tell people to stop complaining. How is what Ranger did different at all?

QBRanger January 18 2010 11:17 PM EST

You are the one who told everyone to stop giving their opinion on the location and appearance of the new referral link.

That our pride was hurt. That our personal happiness with the game means little.

We do not want to hear you tell us how to like or not like something.

If we want to give our opinion, darn right we will.

QBRanger January 18 2010 11:17 PM EST

Sorry, their Negative opinion.

BootyGod January 18 2010 11:28 PM EST

Giving your opinion is one thing.

But there is a line between giving an opinion and just complaining. One helps, one doesn't. And while you're more than welcome to do both, I'm more than welcome to think people childish for it. And comment on it.

QBRanger January 18 2010 11:32 PM EST

So you are criticizing the criticizer?

Is that only a waste of forum space? Just let people give their opinions on the subject at hand. Give yours for all I care.

But leave the criticism of the criticizer off these pages. Otherwise, to me at least, you come off a preachy. And divert the thread from the subject it should stay on.
