CB2 is now blocked at my job! (in Off-topic)

Joel January 22 2010 12:25 PM EST

Yep! I missed a lot of BA last night, because I didn't know that until I got there and I didn't burn all my BA before I left home. This means that my growth rate will be slowing down, measurably.
That is, unless, there is a way to bypass the Smartfilter that is being used to block CB! If any of you guys have a sneaky way to get me through the Smartfilter, please tell me!

If that way isn't feasible, then, please tell me the best Smartphone to play CB2 with. I may be getting one soon.
Thank you!

Does a proxy work?

There are tons available, such as www.hidemyass.com

Admin{CB1}Slayer333 [SHIELD] January 22 2010 12:28 PM EST

I wouldn't risk your job to play CB :)

iPhone! Though I have no doubt that novice will back the droid :)

TheHatchetman January 22 2010 12:32 PM EST

phone is definitely the best bet. any smartphone really. CB is awesome but a few extra BA ain't worth a job with the way things are atm :P

Joel January 22 2010 12:32 PM EST

The first time it was blocked I tried to find a proxy but they were all blocked...

I'll be looking at the Iphone, but I'm wondering what that Google phone will be like.

Joel January 22 2010 12:34 PM EST

I guess I can stand missing those BA, but I work 12 hour shifts on the weekends and I won't be able to participate at all in Saturday Wacky Exp. time...

QBRanger January 22 2010 12:36 PM EST

The iPhone works great.

Demigod January 22 2010 12:41 PM EST

If your company isn't overly strict about it, keep trying proxies. My company had a stint of blocking tons of sites, but I still managed to find a few proxies that passed eSafe.

And a question for someone's who's more tech savvy than I -- Isn't there some method of dodging blocks that involves just using the numerical address?

Joel January 22 2010 12:44 PM EST

I tried for a whole hour to find a proxy that wasn't blocked and I even tried the Google Translate trick, but the Smartfilter labeled it as an anonymizer!
I was wondering if one of the Admins could make some kind of loophole site that I could use.

Wasp January 22 2010 12:44 PM EST

I use a nokia 5800 at work... Works fine with cb :)

Joel January 22 2010 12:46 PM EST

I would use my PSP, but I can't find a reliable hot-spot at work.
If I could get a cheepo phone that'll play CB well, then I'll get that one. Anyone know the cheapest phone I could get that still plays CB well enough?

renamedname [The Forgehood] January 22 2010 12:54 PM EST

Any phone with a reasonable display will do just fine. I'm playing on an old WinMobile device (HTC Hermes) with GPRS, so no 3G is even an option. Just be sure that you can answer the bot check quick. ;)

QBRanger January 22 2010 1:00 PM EST

If you get a cell phone, be sure to get unlimited internet access instead of pay by the GB download.

kevlar January 22 2010 1:06 PM EST

That stinks, Joel. But ya be careful don't get into trouble... and like Ranger says get an accommodating plan that takes care of data/web or you could get into a ridiculous phone bill.

AdminNightStrike January 22 2010 1:23 PM EST

ssh tunnels

renamedname [The Forgehood] January 22 2010 2:02 PM EST

ssh tunnels will only be of use if he has access to port 22. Most likely he will have only a http(s)-proxy. And someone seems to be looking at the access log, if carnageblender is blocked all of a sudden, so be really careful with tunneling tricks.

AdminNightStrike January 22 2010 2:03 PM EST

eh.. I ran my ssh server on port 443 (I'm sure you can intuit why)

Revs January 22 2010 2:23 PM EST

I've run into this before, just login via the IP address and it should bypass the server filter (if it's filtering based on vocabulary in the web browser). Try logging in with 67.58.96.34 and see if that works.

QBRanger January 22 2010 3:12 PM EST

Have you tried another browser?

Salketer [big bucks] January 22 2010 3:13 PM EST

Revs, the IP solution would have been great but it does not work...

The best proxy to use would be one you own, it will not get popular enough to be known by the protection. Only way to be found is by a human looking at the log.

Revs January 22 2010 4:20 PM EST

Salkateer, worth a shot though. It's always worked for me. And it seems the simplest solution for a first attempt . . .

http://www.torproject.org/torbrowser/

QBRanger January 22 2010 4:27 PM EST

That link novice is blocked at my work, while CB is not.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] January 22 2010 4:29 PM EST

Buy your IT dept lunch... they're doing a good job.

AdminG Beee January 22 2010 5:25 PM EST

CB was blocked at my place a few years ago. I went through the same exercise back then that you are trying to now Joel.

I failed.

Both myself and Vicious Cat (we work at the same place) ended up purchasing internet enabled phones simply to allow us to continue burning BA without interruption.

It's sad how we're all caught on the same hook...

I'm currently using a Nokia N97 to play and it works well.

QBJohnnywas January 22 2010 5:44 PM EST

Just gotten online for pretty much the first time today. Because of the alert over Internet Explorer this week my company's IT dept have blocked almost everything online, including CB.

And I've lost internet access at home thanks to a dodgy laptop. Borrowing my father in law's right now.

Anybody had experience of a laptop not being able to get online thanks to problems with DHCP.

Demigod January 22 2010 6:18 PM EST

Joel, I don't know what type of business you do, but if you feel comfortable with any of the IT guys, you could always just ask nicely.

At least with my company, the IT dep't is only concerned with introducing viruses into the systems. They really don't care about time-killers.

Joel January 22 2010 10:03 PM EST

I'm going to try all of those tricks if what Demigod just suggested doesn't come through. After CB2 was blocked the first time, the IT guy for the data center that I guard unblocked it for me the day after I told him it had been blocked! The complication may be that the boss of my boss is the one cracking down on "excessive" internet usage. If only I could find out what they consider to be excessive! I would be able to balance my time wisely and stay out of trouble.

I just now got my new laptop and I'm going to walk around my job-site trying to find a hot spot. I found one with my PSP about 3 months ago, and my PSP sucks at getting good signals or even reading a hotspot in the area, so I'm hoping my laptop is able to pick them up better and with a stronger signal. If that fails, then I'll just have to get one of those phones that you guys suggested!
Thanks for all the help guys and wish me luck!

QBsutekh137 January 23 2010 12:46 AM EST

Sure, G_Beee, you and Vicious Cat "work at the same place"...

I haven't heard such a great multi excuse in a long time.

:P

Admin{CB1}Slayer333 [SHIELD] January 23 2010 12:55 AM EST

He tried that wife excuse for a while too.
