New Players in Chat (in General)

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] January 25 2010 9:36 AM EST

Why aren't new players put into chat immediately? I think they should be put in both carnage and new_players? Can any of the devs or admins explain why it is the way it is?

I'd say let's give it a try!

in the past, this prevented newb spammers.

Should we just nuke the New Players chatroom and start everyone with PM and Carnage?

Are you new here?

New Players is nice to greet newcomers, but you have to be there when they are, you have to be not-afk...It also makes the chat bar incredibly bloated.

I loved the mentor system for that reason. It made it easy to say "Hey! Welcome!". I could have done without New Players at that time.

As for strat advice, I don't see why it couldn't be given in Carnage.

New Players down.
Mentor System up! (Yeah, even though it hasn't shown to increase retention. Maybe we weren't intense enough in it's use?)

Jon did some studying and evidently the retention level between those who had a mentor and those who did not was similar. I say why not throw them into regular carnage? People are often talking in carnage. I think that if they got thrown into chat immediately they would get the "community" experience first hand.

I've always thought it was not the system which was inefficient, but rather how we used it.

Lol, sorry, didn't read it in enough detail, I'm in class :). I was always surprised that he said they didn't work that effectively. I feel like a NUB would appreciate it. Hmm, we need to do something :).

Having Mentor and talking with the community right away made all the difference for me. Don't get me wrong the game is addictive but it was the community that got me hooked.

However I feel that the tutorial is necessary.
I would also delay the NUB 2 weeks and let them run a Tutorial Char in the mean time for the learning curve.

Just my opinion....

I don't understand the redundancy of starting new players with both the New Players chat window and the Carnage chat window. Since most of us have ditched the New Players window by now, it ends up being void of chatter. I fear it will end up making people think we don't have an active community.

That's also why I'm also against Shire. I know we split the community into different groups to let new players feel like they were advancing the ranks quickly, but when I rejoined CB, it felt like the game was dead. I actually remember looking at the Shire logs and seeing that only myself, AdmiralKiller, Rrowland, and Gols were really playing. A few weeks ago I got a CM from a new player asking if this game was still "active" because of it. Is there any problem grouping Shire with the next group... Lorien, I think?

Great idea Demi, that's truly an amazing idea. As of now there is only 3 weeks difference between Shire and Rivendell. Why not put the two of them together. Definitely would have a lot more players, and the realm would seem much much more active. As for the new players room, I kindof agree with you. Why not eliminate np and just put them into carnage, immediately. If they have a lot of q's, who cares, it will liven up chat even more, and I'm sure that we won't mind answering them. If it really becomes a problem later b/c we have 20-30 new people in chat at once we can deal with it then. As for the mentoring program, I don't see how a little one on one could hurt.

never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down.
