Fix the stupid NW contest (Attn Mian) (in Contests)

AdminNightStrike March 9 2010 12:09 PM EST

Ok, so apparently there's still another way to foul up NW's. Miandrital found 3 base MH's all with different net worth. So here's a contest for you all:

Figure out how to break the NW calculation. BS, forge, DE, make a wish, whatever. Find out what yields a wrong NW, and you'll win a cool million and whatever item you want (barring t-shirts that can't be created, or some other technicality that I've forgotten about... supporter items are fine.)

Oh, and Mian doesn't know it yet, but he's going to be running this contest. Thanks, Mian!

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] March 9 2010 12:27 PM EST

Alright, assuming that their NW was only $1 apart, I have figured it out. It has to do with DEing. When trying to DE an item, it rounds down when it gives you money back, but to make up for the money, it adds 1 to the NW. This only works once, sequential DEing doesn't add 1 to the NW. If there is more to this, let me know.

Areodjarekput March 9 2010 12:34 PM EST

While that may be true (I haven't checked, so I'll take your word for it) that can't be the only issue, because there were three base MHs with different NWs, not just two.

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] March 9 2010 12:35 PM EST

Also, the above bug doesn't happen with armor so far.

AdminShade March 9 2010 12:36 PM EST

one could be disenchanted from a higher NW to start with. If you do this trick a few times, (blacksmith +2 then DE 1 and 1) or (BS +3 and DE +3) etc. it could generate a different NW?

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] March 9 2010 12:41 PM EST

I've tested on a few armors, of even and odd NW, and have not replicated the DEing bug.

{EQ}Viperboy March 9 2010 12:47 PM EST

Soon all our base items will have a NW of 1 or approaching infinity, hehe...

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] March 9 2010 12:48 PM EST

Yeah, it definitely adds one to the NW, instead of subtracting one.

AdminNightStrike March 9 2010 2:26 PM EST

Sorry, I don't follow...

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] March 9 2010 2:28 PM EST

Ok, I'd really like some more info from Mian, but I'm certain now that items in the store are also spawning for different values, usually one apart. Using this bug, with the one above could give you 3 or 4 items of same stats and different NW. Here are the staff slings I own. DEable, and they spawned, no one sold them: A Staff Sling [2x3] (+9) 40,222 ; A Staff Sling [2x3] (+9) 40,221. I also checked the math when I was BSing them, it added correctly, they just spawned with different values. Also, these are non-DEable, so you know I didn't do that on them. I can only assume that auctioneer spawned auction items are the same way.

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] March 9 2010 2:29 PM EST

Ok, so basically I've found two things that result in different NW. If you DE an item for the first time, it adds one to the NW. Secondly, weapons are spawning with minor differences in their NW. I repeat, *freshly spawned items*.

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] March 9 2010 2:33 PM EST

As for why the store is doing this, I'm going to guess that when the store is spawning items, it uses the old formula for NW, or something along those lines. That would allow for items to be a good amount of later down the line.

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] March 9 2010 2:36 PM EST

good amount of difference later*

AdminNightStrike March 9 2010 2:45 PM EST

Ok, I will look at the spawning code.

Zhakrin [Knights who say Ni] March 9 2010 3:04 PM EST

I don't really know if it helps, but I found this:

Starting point: ELS x1 +0 NW 8135

BS to x1 +2
BS cost 1450
NW after BS 9586 (1 more than it should be)

Compare this with:

BS to x1 +1
BS cost 379
NW after BS 8515 (1 more than it should be)

Now using the ELS x80 +1 NW 8515
BS to x1 +2
BS cost 1071
NW after BS 9587 (2 more than it should be)

So if I BS to +2 at once I get a NW of 9586, if I first BS to +1 and then to +2 I get a NW of 9587 (with the same BS cost).

Miandrital March 9 2010 3:57 PM EST

So this is what I have:

A Morgul-Hammer [84x1] (+0) 7,603
A Morgul-Hammer [84x1] (+0) 15,423
A Morgul-Hammer [84x1] (+0) 23,243

I purchased these all from Rawr, so I don't know what happened, but I know that one of the Morg's was DE'ed from x4 +10. I have a feeling this might relate to the NW correction that was applied a few days ago, but I'm not sure.

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] March 9 2010 3:58 PM EST

^ Those are wayyyyy more screwed up than anything simple.

AdminShade March 9 2010 4:02 PM EST

I'll make it more complicated by buying one from Tournament Store:

A Morgul-Hammer [84x1] (+0) 7,602

=)

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] March 9 2010 4:03 PM EST

The one that Zhakrin posted is part of the old bug that never got fixed for the +. Each + upgrade adds one more than it should, x's are fine, and I think armor is fine.

Miandrital March 9 2010 4:04 PM EST

So I tried upgrading one of mine to +1, and then DE'ing it, and it restored the NW to 7603. I'm guessing it is one higher than Shade's due to the thing titan pointed out.

ControlFreak March 10 2010 4:59 AM EST

I posted my go at the solution in your chatmail last evening, NightStrike

AdminNightStrike March 10 2010 8:11 AM EST

I think CF wins this award (sorry, Titan).

ControlFreak March 10 2010 8:22 AM EST

Thanks to the admins who stopped my previous post in this thread that explained an exploit a bit too well.

Thanks to Nightstrike for fixing the exploit and giving me stuff :)

Areodjarekput March 10 2010 8:33 AM EST

Now that it's fixed, can we know what it was? I'm curious, and I'm sure other people are too.

AdminNightStrike March 10 2010 8:37 AM EST

I'm not really keen on advertising ways to exploit games..... especially as it seems that this one in particular was used with some regularity.

Demigod March 10 2010 8:40 AM EST

Dang, now I'm curious.

AdminNightStrike March 10 2010 8:59 AM EST

Ok, I reset all the weapons... now just have to do armor.
