Tenuous claim to celebrity. (in Contests)

AdminG Beee April 10 2010 4:31 AM EDT

$500k from my admin char to the person who either makes me laugh or impresses me most with their most tenuous link to celebrity. The more tenuous the better, and I'll trust you to be truthful.

Example of my very own tenuous link:
I was brought up in the same small village as Susan Boyle. I now live in the town next to where we grew up and until recently drank in the pub opposite Susan's house where she would perform karaoke at weekends. I have never met her, nor do I have any recollection of ever having seen her in the pub. We must have been there at the same time on more than one occasion however, and I must have heard her sing given that according to many of the other locals she "always used to be here".

Now, what's your tenuous claim to celebrity?

ControlFreak April 10 2010 4:53 AM EDT

Hmm.. (given your avatar)..

I managed to hitchhike to the Nadi airport with what turned out to be Fijian golfer Vijay Singh's former golf teacher. He completely misjudged my physique and commented I would probably make a decent golfer.

Also did military duty with a guy who received 50$ from Tiger Woods steward (for guiding him 100m from the private jet to the airport terminal).

QBJohnnywas April 10 2010 5:21 AM EDT

I'm not sure that it's celebrity, but my dad worked as a film and tv extra in the 70s. He's one of the captured submarine crew in The Spy Who Loved Me and various British tv programmes and films (Z-Cars, I Claudius and other stuff most people on here won't have a clue about).

But the one thing he did that I'm guessing everybody on here will have at least heard of is..Star Wars.

My dad was a stormtrooper!!

Meanwhile I know GL and he was on TV!

QBJohnnywas April 10 2010 5:24 AM EDT

No, he wasn't the one who bumps their head.

(Back left on the lift when the Millennium Falcon is first docked in the Death Star. And one of the same four (same day of filming) who are guarding the Falcon and move out to investigate Vader and Ben fighting.)

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] April 10 2010 5:34 AM EDT

My great uncle who I've only seen a handful of times in my life spent a period of time as chairman of Norwich City Football Club.
He therefore became good friends with Delia Smith and sent me a match program with her autograph on.
So I now have a famous persons autograph who I don't even like, let alone have met.

IIKlutzyKatII [KlawedBellows] April 10 2010 6:04 AM EDT

1) I live in the same town that Matthew McConaughey grew and that his brother still lives in (was thirty minutes to late picking up hubby at job and missed being able to get McConaughey's autograph)
2) Lucky or unlucky enough to live in same town George W. Bush grew up in
3) My first name and maiden name is the same as an actress that I dislike very much (thus why I started going by a different name when males decided to make comments)

AdminG Beee April 10 2010 6:17 AM EDT

JW, I don't think you can claim a link to your father as "tenuous". LOL

From the TV and movies he's been in I would definitely say claiming celebrity is fair though : )

Soxjr April 10 2010 7:30 AM EDT

I was raised in the same hometown of Pitching legend Nolan Ryan. I played baseball with his middle child Reece Ryan. Some games his dad would actually come onto the field and chat with us players. So in a way I have played ball with a Hall of Famer!

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] April 10 2010 9:25 AM EDT

I'm gonna bow outta this one, a bit to easy for me to win (Depending on if you're just interested in 'current' celebrities! :P). ;)

But I'll leave you with;

I was a star in an Adult Movie at the age of three. ;)

Mythology April 10 2010 9:30 AM EDT

My first proper girlfriend (of 4 years) was obsessed with becoming an actress and all the celebrity crap, we eventually broke up, she now lives in London and writes for a very well known magazine (in this country) basically doing a bloody terrible Celebrity gossip column talking about whos been seen with who and the like, basically the worst type of news imo, going to those parties and just trying to get gossip and red carpet sitting, ugh...

So yeah thats pretty tenuous link :D

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] April 10 2010 9:38 AM EDT

In a kind of 6/7 degrees of Kevin Bacon, I'll get the ball rolling seriosuly.

At school, one of my teachers was Robort Stamp, brother of Terrance Stamp (also my Dad went to Gramar school with both).

From Terrnce Stamp, take your pick. Michael Caine (his roommate). Jolie/Morgan Freeman (Wanted). Jennifer Garner (Elektra). Johnywas's Dad (Star Wars, well ok only Episode 1! :P).

How tenuous do you want to get? :P

AdminTal Destra April 10 2010 9:49 AM EDT

My grandfathers house was next to George W Bush's mother-in-laws. I have met the man while painting my grandads house... he asked(this was before his second presidency) my opinion on whether or not he should run again. I gave him my honest answer and said "I couldn't care less about this country or you and your politics, ask someone else"

Unappreciated Misnomer April 10 2010 9:49 AM EDT

Stu Barnes is a distance uncle who plays now for the Dallas Star in the NHL.

Meanwhile back on the home front Dan Aykroyd been to my town numerous times to promote his wines at our yearly wine festivals.

Other than that I think Im a big shot and my mom thinks Im cool :P

Zenai [Cult of the Valaraukar] April 10 2010 10:03 AM EDT

When I was a teenager I went to the Galleria in Houston. It was my first time there and I was there with my mentor to watch the first official Aeros game.

They were playing the Dallas Stars and well I didn't know who to root for since I was born in Dallas but raised in Houston. So I called foul for both sides when I saw some thing wrong.

Well I guess I called it right because one of the players said "Even that kid could see it!" Some of the Dallas Players got rowdy and started pushing the Aeros Player. Some one got hit with a stick and a shirt was pulled over a head.

Everyone on my side of the rink was bombarded with gloves and helments as both teams took to the ice and beat the crap outta each other.

Yup I was the one who instigated the first fight the Houston Aeros had......well kinda....lol

Demigod April 10 2010 10:08 AM EDT

One of my family members was the original drummer for REM while at UGA. My understanding is that he quit the band early on when he thought they weren't going anywhere. And I just checked Wikipedia, but he's not listed. I think he still maintains sporadic contact with one of the guys.

Another family member (same side of the family) owns a vacation home next to one of Jimmy Carter's vacation homes. He's seen secret service (and bears), but never seen the former president.

Admiralkiller [Cult of the Valaraukar] April 10 2010 10:28 AM EDT

I went to the same school at the same time as the singing duo Teagan and sara. I don't remember them when I look at then on thier music videos and I don't remember them when my best friend tells me that we had conversations with them. He had drama class with them and remembers then plain as day, but not I.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] April 10 2010 11:34 AM EDT

My wife went to school with the drummer from The Darkness, and used to have lunch at his grandma's. ;)

BadFish April 10 2010 11:36 AM EDT

The guy who robbed my parents' house has an uncle who played a dead body on Law and Order.

Lochnivar April 10 2010 11:58 AM EDT

I used to work at a marina, the guy who I replaced (but never actually worked with) once met Johnny Carson on his boat.

Best part is, he didn't even know who he was talking to.

But if you want really tenuous:
I lived in England for 2yrs when I was younger and I believe the Beatles were from England.... creepy but true I swear!

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] April 10 2010 12:03 PM EDT

I met a guy while playing a pool match who played football in his back garden with Jimmy Greaves after delivering groceries to Greavesies mother.
Is that tenuous enough a link for myself? :P
I also was friends with a guy who was drummer in a band who drank in the same pub in Kidderminster that a couple of members of Led Zepplin used to call their local.

AdminShade April 10 2010 12:12 PM EDT

I'm Jonathan's long lost brother.

Admin{CB1}Slayer333 [SHIELD] April 10 2010 12:24 PM EDT

I play a game called Carnage Blender with a guy named G_Beee who made a post about celebrities in which another guy named Gentleman Loser replied stating he went to school with a teacher by the name of Robert Stamp, brother of Terrence Stamp, who was in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, which is the same series in which JohnnyWas's Dad played a Storm Trooper in Episode 1!

I practically know a Storm Trooper!

Lord Bob April 10 2010 1:15 PM EDT

A friend of mine is a descendant of Thomas Culpepper, who was beheaded by Henry VIII for having an affair with Queen Catherine Howard.

Coincidentally, Culpepper will make his debut on tomorrow's season premiere of The Tudors.

Sadly, that's all I've got.

TheHatchetman April 10 2010 1:22 PM EDT

Herbert Hoover is my first cousin... 8 generations back...

Mikel [Bring it] April 10 2010 1:25 PM EDT

Ok. When I was younger, I was working on a co-pilot's license and logged my hours flying with a Private Pilot that flew for horse owner D. Wayne Lukas. Bill Murray is a good friend of his and sometimes we would fly out to where ever he was and pick him up and take them to the Kentucky Derby. (I won't comment on Bill Murray, but let's say he's not a pleasant person in real life).

Now because of friends that I had at the private access airport that we flew out of, I got to meet Bon Jovi, his wife, and the band. Couple of days later, he saw me at the concert and recognized me and gave me a high five in the middle of the concert and later I got an autographed shirt that he left at the airport for me.

Fast Forward later in life, I worked for a company that sold Movies to companies and I met a bunch of celebrities thru them.
Afternoon lunch party with Chrisine Taylor-Stiller (the new Marcia on the Brady Bunch Movie).
Partied at Burbank's BBq with Hillbilly Jim (a WWF old-school star).
Dinner party with Cynthia Rothrock (Five time world Karate Champion and actress).

I met a few more actors/actresses during the mid '80's and late '90's but most of them I don't remember who they were.

Lord Bob April 10 2010 1:42 PM EDT

I won't comment on Bill Murray, but let's say he's not a pleasant person in real life.

How disappointing. I'm a big fan of him.

BootyGod April 10 2010 1:42 PM EDT

One time (Just one time) I was watching CNN. It was quite by accident. And they had some story going about past world leaders. And they showed a picture of Bill Clinton. My jaw dropped and I whispered to myself, "I've just met a former president.". Then I changed the channel.

Have met two guys from Bonethugs"n"Harmony then Roy of Siegfried & Roy on the same night in Vegas. Meaning shook hands with not just saw and gasped as goes for the rest mentioned. The driver of the original BigFoot along with Gravedigger's driver before my teens. Wasn't a signing event with a crowd or anything ,but Bigfoot's driver was nice enough to take a polaroid of me in the tire of that monster truck so kind of memorable. Robert Gates, Billy Gillispie, Clyde Drexler, and Jeff Bagwell. There are four actors/actresses I merely saw from afar, of which names I can't remember currently, so I won't include them.

Annnnddd that's about it.... Anything else would be family blood line stuff.

AdminShade April 10 2010 2:43 PM EDT

Originally Jerry and Ben and me made a special kind of ice creams which were fair trade and we just didn't make enough money for the 3 of us. Also we had problems naming the brand. Dennis Jerry and Ben's just didn't sound right.

Anyway some years later, I saw a new brand of ice creams in the supermarket called Ben and Jerry's. Wonderful stuff it is!

Kompton Kidd April 10 2010 2:44 PM EDT

I played with Fred Durst daily on COD MW2. One point we had a huge lobby going and there was this kid that was ticking me off. I started to make fun of him because of his loud squeaky voice. Spent a good 15 minutes ripping on the kid, I then asked why he was playing the game with us, Fred told me it was his kid.

BootyGod April 10 2010 5:11 PM EDT

Was a joke NS. Get it? "Hey, I saw him on the news. That makes us friends!"

ControlFreak wins with his tenuous link to Vijay Singh's celebrity.

AdminG Beee (AdminBeee) ControlFreak (Death-Eaters) $500000 -- msg_id=00329l 5:40 PM EDT

The winning entry struck a particular chord with myself given that I also have a tenuous link with Vijay. I've had dealings with the odd nightclub bouncer in Edinburgh over the years :) and I often used to frequent the Amphitheatre nightclub in the town way back in the late 80's when I first started going out with wifey. Vijay Singh was a bouncer at the Amphitheater over a 4wk spell in 1987. Now that's what you call tenuous... :D

PS:
I've been out drinking a couple of times with GL in London.
GL knows JW.
I practically know a Storm Trooper too!

Admin{CB1}Slayer333 [SHIELD] April 12 2010 12:40 AM EDT

I know this one Storm Trooper who claims to have a tenuous link to G_Beee, what an honor!

ControlFreak April 12 2010 12:41 AM EDT

Thanks for the price and the contest (fun to read all the entries).
Once again proves to me that hitchhiking gives memorable experiences, while cab riding gives a lighter wallet.

[Redneck RV] Truc April 14 2010 1:23 AM EDT

Too late I see, but here goes:

A bit of background first: Esther Rolle, the mom on "Good Times" (think "DY-NO-MITE!!") is on my short informal list of really bad TV actresses. She is joined by Vicki Lawrence (Mama on Carol Burnett)and anyone who ever appeared on "Hee Haw".

Now the story:

I sold computers for many years, most recently for Gateway back when they had retail stores. One day I was selling to a gentleman who worked for "The Urban League of Minneapolis" or some such inner city group. As I processed his order it came to light that his last name was Rolle.

"Any relation? I asked, somewhat warily.

"Why yes, Esther is my cousin!!" he beamed with familial pride.

I suppressed a chuckle and sensed a small geyser of bile forming deep within.

"And the talent doesn't stop there!..." he continued.

I braced myself.

"... my nephew is the Green Power Ranger!!"

Talented family indeed.
