Last week, quite unexpectidly, one of our two cats, Sammy (the younger of the pair) was diagnosed with having an innoperable tumour at the back of his throat.
He seemed to pick up a little at the vets, on a drip and eating watered down food, so we opted to bring him home to spoil him for a while.
Over the last couple of days, while being hungry (keeps running to his food bowls), he won't eat or drink anything anymore, no matter how watered down it is, and is slowly detriorating. So it's time to take him back for one last visit to the vets, to put him to sleep.
I'm crying my eyes out as I write this.
I'll miss you little geezer.

Friend of mine had 5 cats, 3 of them died in the past few years but the most cuddly one still lives. It'll be a sad day any day when a lovable cat dies...

I hadn't cried for 6 years: Parental Divorces, Funerals, Deaths of close friends, you name it. Had to put my cat of 17 years down and was like Ron Burgandy in the Phone Booth. Nothing I can say to change the pain, but I definitely feel for you and you have my condolences.

Mrs_Beee and I remember Sammy well.
We've had cats and went through the same. Until you've had a pet and lost it, it's hard to appreciate just how upsetting it can be.

You never fully realize how much they mean until you have to say goodbye. It's best for Sammy.
Yeah, while it's a hard thing to do, especially as he's still affectionate, purring his little heart out, and wanting company, it's the best thing for him.
As he's obviously in discomfort, and not going to get any better.
Its always sad when a pet dies and sometimes worse if they need to be put to sleep.
Having lost too many pets over my life, I know how deeply it hurts and you have my deepest sympathies.

Thanks all, and I've a sneaking suspicion I'll be changing my user pic over the next couple of days. ;)
Taking him today, and handing him over was one of the hardest things I've had to do.
But we're under no doubt about it being the right thing now. When Sam was examined, the tumour had spread from his throat, all down the right inside of his mouth.
Claire didn't want to be present when the proceedure was done, so we left with a little clipping of his hair.
Goodnight Sammy.
Hurts to lose a pet when you're close to it. R.I.P. Sammy
