This bill has been reported by a committee and is currently waiting voting in the senate. As I read it, it really only ups punishments for already illegal activities. But, I may be reading it wrong judging by the reactions by certain websites like this: Overreaction?

What do you guys think? Good bad? A little over reaching? I think it might be a little harsh, but I'm never really against harsh penalties, so I'm a little bias.

Full marks to the law makers here!

If the war on drugs has taught us anything it is that you can create social change by putting more people in jail. It must be rewarding to see your leaders learn and adapt so easily.

Yeah, I actually don't have a problem with it, b/c the law this upping/replacing doesn't currently do anything, why would this one. ( I know this is a bad thought to have, but let's face it, it's probably true. )

Must obey MPAA and RIAA overlords!

The notion that harsher penalties stops bad behavior is a well-repeated failure. And like many people, I'm generally against any of the self-serving agendas from MPAA and RIAA.

the short version is yes i agree laws could be toughend up ... but only if other things were lessened. The film and music industry has way to much influence power wise (publically and behind the scenes) and it should be reduced as much if not as more as they wish online laws should be tightened if not way more.

*the above is the shortened and slightly unsober version the next glass and reply would be the more explained/slightly longer and possibly more fine worthy as it would include my stance/actions lol
**the sober version may follow but patents/drugs/right+wrongs/greed/blah+blah seem a tad depressing right now

S:978 ... reminds me of one of those religious text thingies lol

Saw a report years ago about how Germany's courts could push manslaughter charges for drunk driving accidents. Said upping the punishment to that standard cut on drunk driving accidents. Can anyone confirm that?

Dunno about that but I do know a few countries out there are extremely harsh and guess what you have extremes from the people as well. They are either very compliant or completely rebellious. Meh, you can't win them all I guess.

The more you try to hold the Genie in the bottle, the angrier it is when it is finally unleashed.
