Almost 10 years since I started (in Off-topic)

Josh [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 26 2011 3:43 AM EDT

I just logged in to see how things were going and noticed that in January it will be 10 years from when I first played this game. Although, I haven't been active in nearly 5 years.

I get the impression there are very few, if any, people left from the very beginning of CB1 when protestboy hadn't even reached 100k yet. Or if any of these people would even remember me but I just wanted to say "hi" to all those that do.

A few things I remember/miss from the original game were:

Math problems for bot checks.

Store camping. Nothing beat the rush of finding a rare item spawn in the store. Absolutely nothing.

The server going down for a few minutes every night. This was especially fun when an auction was ending during the time period but you could never be sure exactly when it would go down. This was also when you could auction snipe because there was no time added for last second bids.

Todd. If I'm not mistaken he was the first admin besides Jon and likely the creator of the USD market on CB.

Finger of Death. Easily the most frustrating and fun spell. If it hit you, it was instant death, but it had an impossibly low hit chance.

The very first tournament. I played in many of the original tournaments. Unfortunately, I regularly finished in 2nd or 3rd.

Loch Axes and Heavy-Crossbows being the end all be all weapons. If I'm not mistaken I was the first to pay 1mil+ for a Loch.

Adamantite Plate, Elven Cloak (maybe Shadow Cloak), Steel-Shod Boots, Cestis, Armets, and Tower Shields being the best options for armor.

Also, briefly having a top 3 character.

The game evolved a lot over the years. However, as it evolved I feel like it became a lot less fun for people familiar with the original game. At least that's true for me. Maybe it was leveling the playing field with CB2 and NUB/NCB. Maybe it was just the removal of many things players loved (store camping for sure). As friends left and things changed it became harder to stay interested.

However, I want to thank Jon for creating a game I loved for many years and still have fond memories of to this day.

unlucky it isnt possible to have CB 1 and CB 2 on different servers

Demigod August 26 2011 7:26 AM EDT

We had CB1 and CB2 running concurrently for a brief time. It didn't fare well.

i remember when the ranged weapons used to have BOLTS ... for each kind different bolt.
it was cool

Ya I totally +1 the store camping, I want it back or at least doubling the size of the auctions.

I fondly remember my arrow/bolt storage character: "Shark Cage"

I also remember the 50 hits to one character per day rule.

Wow what a name drop! Good to see you still around! (I was just a budding CBer when you left the scene) Come back and join the fray!

Admiralkiller [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 26 2011 9:22 AM EDT

I remember all these things! I even remember selling you that loch for 1+ MILL first one ever. You were new at the time I think.

My name was (Admiralkiller) then. Do you also remember creating CP?(cruel punishment) a clan with benefits that was not actually part of CB. Cool to see you check in and you should give CB a go again I am sure we would love to have you back.

Welcome home!

Lochnivar August 26 2011 11:45 AM EDT

With all this talk of a 'Loch' being sold for 1 mil I suddenly feel like Demi Moore in 'Indecent Proposal'...

Hiya Josh!

Atomicboy [The Knighthood] August 26 2011 1:02 PM EDT

I was in cruel punishment ! totally forgot about that. DIdn't we have our own website and all.

Josh [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 26 2011 4:22 PM EDT

Haha. I completely forgot about those chat clans back in the day. Thank you for reminding me.

AK, now that you mention it, I do remember it being you that sold me the Loch. For some reason I've been thinking it was Zannhart. Maybe Zann gave me the loan so I could afford it. I wasn't new though actually. I had just been reinstated after being banned and emailing Jon a couple months later to let me back.

I didn't include ammo for ranged weapons cause I hadn't noticed that it was removed yet. Ammo was quite fun. Having your defensive ammo super upgraded so you couldn't be farmed was probably my favorite part.

In fact, back in the day, I kind of started (or at least was a large part of) the Compound Bow craze because the + to hit was so much cheaper to upgrade or forge that you could get multiple hits over x-bows.

Which reminds me of the introduction of forging and how it was actually viable for everyone to stop and forge at times since there was no worry of a NUB/NCB catching up to you.

Also, I miss the large change months every other month that almost required everyone to revise their strategies and constantly adapt making the game much more competitive. As well as regular introduction of new items.

Also, I miss the large change months

Don't we all

Welcome back Josh!

Josh [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 27 2011 11:15 AM EDT

I some how forgot about 'carping.' Or in general, people actively chatting.

Admiralkiller [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 29 2011 12:10 AM EDT

AB yes we had our own website lol...I actually was president and leader...lol I had to quit the game and it fell apart eventually.

Good idea, nice and organized but because my play stopped I was not able to keep what I promised.

Josh [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 29 2011 1:26 AM EDT

Honestly, I think the basis of the clan was basically the ability to feel comfortable loaning and to work together to boost each others score/rewards. Now the game has clans and a loan system for that. We were way ahead of our time.

I feel like we had registration fee and used the pooled money to help someone when they needed it. I'm not imagining this am I?
