Gun: Chat banned and fined $1m (in Public Record)

AdminG Beee September 28 2011 10:04 AM EDT

Gun has been fined $1m and is serving a 30 day timeout from chat as a result of CM misuse.

Reyth September 28 2011 10:15 AM EDT

Welp...

Quyen September 28 2011 10:18 AM EDT

A Lesser AR of 15 [Red Permanent Assurance] September 28 2011 10:53 AM EDT

Wow. If that picture was too much someone could have just said so. o.o cya

Kefeck [Demonic Serenity] September 28 2011 10:59 AM EDT

So instead of 10 active chatters we now have 9? =(

Xenogard [Chaotic Serenity] September 28 2011 11:19 AM EDT

I knew I should've mentioned you might not get away with that pic..

Thanks for the tats o.O

Demigod September 28 2011 11:30 AM EDT

Why do I miss all the fun stuff?

Elf X.7plus35k September 28 2011 11:37 AM EDT

All I'm going to say is you better return!!

Lochnivar September 28 2011 11:55 AM EDT

Dude... now almost nobody will get my god-awful puns in chat!

Dang it Gun, you'd better get back in chat asap.
(otherwise, after 6months of essentially punning to myself, i will end up locked away in a mental institute...)

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] September 28 2011 12:42 PM EDT

Wait, we can get banned for CM misuse? Did it involve forums or chat in someway? B/c from what I've always gathered about admin's responses is if you pissed someone off enough that their cm's are getting bad; that's your fault.

QBOddBird September 28 2011 12:43 PM EDT

idk what Gun did, but Titan, did you know that I could spam your CMbox until all the messages in there are gone due to volume, including any that may have held information you considered useful and didn't expect to disappear within the next 30 minutes?

=D

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] September 28 2011 12:46 PM EDT

Did you know you could also fill someone else inbox up in the matter of minutes with obscenities and know one seemed to care?

QBOddBird September 28 2011 12:48 PM EDT

My point was simply that there are various ways to abuse things well beyond their intended use, and there are varying degrees of violation as well.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] September 28 2011 12:48 PM EDT

Gun was punished for sending unsolicited quasi-unpg images to another user, the context prior to the cm is the reason he was punished.

Ignore is always the best way to handle cm based disputes, and will continue to be the preferred solution going forward

If someone has Gun's cell text him and tell him to log on...

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] September 28 2011 12:50 PM EDT

Yeah I mean there's a ton ton ton of things you can abuse on CB. And many of them can and are punished for. I'm just wondering why we suddenly go from not caring at all about CMs... to giving someone a 1 month ban... That's quite a jump right. From not giving a damn, to a punch in the face.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] October 5 2011 2:47 AM EDT

Gun has been unbanned

I believe that were I NS and saw what he saw I would have acted similarly. Since then I've spoken with both Gun and NS, while the consequences of the actions taken here aren't entirely clear I hope that unbanning Gun will increase the likelihood of his return to chat.

Of all the fixtures in chat, Gun easily means the most to me, he was in chat the day I arrived, and I hope that the last time I get to sign into chat, a thousand eons from now that he'll still be there, being himself.

Come home soon bud!

AdminQBVerifex October 5 2011 5:59 AM EDT

I'm sure he will find out soon enough. We've been playing MC actually. ;)

Reyth October 5 2011 6:07 AM EDT

Wow the admins here care so much, I think I'm starting to cry...

No wait I think its my allergies...:o

Admiralkiller [Cult of the Valaraukar] October 5 2011 6:25 AM EDT

I personally don't care what Gun did. I just know I prefer him around offensive or not. How can I ever get over 10 points without him?

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] October 5 2011 9:08 AM EDT

I prefer him around offensive or not

Well there's only one type of Gun, best leave the women and children at home :P

Elf X.7plus35k October 5 2011 11:37 AM EDT

I'm sure the goat will be very happy to have him back

FINE PRINT: as will others....

Xenogard [Chaotic Serenity] October 5 2011 1:01 PM EDT

I love lamp.

Err Gun.

Phrede October 5 2011 2:20 PM EDT

OK - so we can get people back and reverse admin decisions for people who have broken the rules just by "voting" in forums - great.

Wish I known that for Moto

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] October 5 2011 2:29 PM EDT

OK - so we can get people back and reverse admin decisions for people who have broken the rules just by "voting" in forums - great.

This was anything but a vote of the public. More along the lines of admins changing their minds b/c the punishment dished out to Gun wasn't inline with the punishment that has been dealt out in the past year (pretty much none.) It is nice that they at least gave him a timeout, b/c I feel a few of those could be handed out more often.

Xenogard [Chaotic Serenity] October 5 2011 2:42 PM EDT

Timeouts I understand.. But banning one of our already extremely small/dwindling community members from chat for a month.. ehh a tad too harsh IMHO.

Glad to see the decision was changed, and Gun got a nice ol' time out instead.

QBRanger October 5 2011 2:57 PM EDT

OK - so we can get people back and reverse admin decisions for people who have broken the rules just by "voting" in forums - great.

Freed has a point. And I know it is solely and admin decision.

The application of "punishment" has been very sporadic and very irregular.

I have had people actively curse at me in CM and when I brought it up to multiple admins I get the "You should just /ignore them".

Now we have someone who was actually punished for abusing the CM and since chat misses him, his timeout is cut massively short.

I would like standardization of things at least.

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] October 5 2011 3:01 PM EDT

I would like standardization of things at least.

I think that's what they were trying to do with this revert. They see that doing nothing can be bad. But, also chat banning for a month may be a little too much. They're just trying to find some middle ground.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 5 2011 5:17 PM EDT

ranger, if you were in charge, how would you standardize the policies?

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] October 5 2011 5:21 PM EDT

ranger, if you were in charge, how would you standardize the policies?

Can I go next?

QBRanger October 5 2011 5:24 PM EDT

First I would state that whatever is allowed in chat is allowed in CM. Which was the policy I thought ever since CB1.

If it is not allowed in chat, it is not allowed in CM. Unless of course both parties agree in CM to suspend that rule.

Basically, if you would type it in chat, they you can type it in CM. If unsure, don't type it.

That alone is the first thing I, if an admin, would ask.

That is standardization. The penalties would have to be discussed among all the admins to get a standard policy.

Like first offense is a day ban from x and y.
Second offense a week. Third a month. Fourth is a ban from CB.

But, as we all know, Ranger will never be in charge.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 5 2011 5:24 PM EDT

you can go first! ; )

QBRanger October 5 2011 5:24 PM EDT

Can I go next?

When I'm in charge, you can be my VP.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 5 2011 5:25 PM EDT

too slow!

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 5 2011 5:26 PM EDT

so the admins should be checking people's private messages to make sure they aren't breaking those rules or you want us only to step in when someone complains?

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] October 5 2011 5:31 PM EDT

I agree with Ranger pretty much on this. Either CMs should be monitored for some, or not at all. We have an ignore feature, also, you wouldn't have to always look at CM/PMs, just wait for a complaint.

In addition to that, I would like that rules always be enforced, and it be clear what those rules are. I know there is a lack of time from the admins, so that makes it a little hard. But, I'm hoping here.

Finally, I would like a standardization of punishments. Break a rule the first time in 6 months, verbal warning, unless it's really bad, then you go to 1 day from forum/chat, or both. 2nd time, 1 week. 3rd time 1 month. Of course, these should be always taken with a little discretion from the admins, just like a judge in court. But, I would just like a little more consistency. And believe me, I understand, *WE ARE ALL BUSY*. So, I in no way think this is NS's fault, yours or any other admins. I'm greatful for all you do. This is just me hoping.

QBRanger October 5 2011 5:34 PM EDT

so the admins should be checking people's private messages to make sure they aren't breaking those rules or you want us only to step in when someone complains?

Duh!

If people do not complain, then one can imply consent. If someone complains then action may or may not be needed, like in chat.

I have CMd an admin less than 5 times in my years in CB about this. And yet have had conversations with people a few time (more than 5) where they have cursed at me. Only after I ask them to stop, repeatedly, do I CM an admin.

And then I get the typical answer "You should just /ignore" them". IMO, that is the wrong answer. CB is supposed to be a PG game. At least that is how it was in CB1. CB2 has gotten away from that.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 5 2011 5:36 PM EDT

duh fails to enlighten me in this case, which one are you choosing?

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 5 2011 5:38 PM EDT

i think you chose only step in when someone complains. then we should go in and read all of the cm's preceding that one to see if it was an escalating issue on both sides? or do we just mete out punishment to the first one that cusses?

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] October 5 2011 5:42 PM EDT

Just do one of these:

1) Say anything goes in CM, if you don't want to get CMs from someone, ignore them.

2) Say explicit language or behavior can be punished if used in a harassing manner that is unwelcome by the person receiving the CMs, and then wait for a complaint.

Just pick one, I don't care which. It's just some admins pick 1, while others pick 2...

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 5 2011 5:47 PM EDT

i do like titan's idea better! i can get behind that one.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] October 5 2011 5:49 PM EDT

it wasn't about the cm per say, it was because of a perception of spamming an image to many folks

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] October 5 2011 5:50 PM EDT

it wasn't about the cm per say, it was because of a perception of
spamming an image to many folks

It was sent through CM right? Which is why I think #2 may be the best; but like I said, either, I just want consistency. And Gun's situation is barely of concern to me, b/c I don't really know the whole story. My opinion is drawn from many events.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 5 2011 5:58 PM EDT

i would like an easier method of ignoring someone than going to chat for cm's as well as more tools for managing such a blacklist. that would be my ideal solution, it doesn't tie up admins, it leaves it on the user but empowers them to handle the situation.

everything else is just over-regulation in my mind!

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] October 5 2011 6:00 PM EDT

I think it'd be nice to have a separate ignore list for CM/chat too. But, I can think of at least 100 other things I'd want implemented first :P

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 5 2011 6:01 PM EDT

that is always the case with me as well. i want uc fixed first! ; )

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] October 5 2011 6:05 PM EDT

that is always the case with me as well. i want uc fixed first!

That actually wasn't on my list...

1) Mobile implementation
2) Return of themes
3) New Weapon(s)
4) New Armor(s)
5) Improved Tutorial
6) Better NCB/NUB
7) Facebook re-implementation
8) CM Icon on the sidebar
9-100... etc.

But, I suppose we could get to UC after the other 100 :-)

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 5 2011 6:06 PM EDT

hehe, that is the real kicker, everyone has different priorities. i am glad i am just an admin and not a dev! ; 0

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] October 5 2011 6:13 PM EDT

Well I just always figure, who cares if the game is balanced if no one plays. And nothing in the game right now is absurdly broken. So, I just want to focus on getting more users and keeping them here.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 5 2011 6:21 PM EDT

it can be difficult to quantify the number that left due to lack of facebook or mobile app, bonus structure, uc being borked, lack of graphics, etc.

uc is a personal issue for me especially since jon had stated he was addressing that next before he decided to go be an uber-capitalist and start his own business! i hope he is doing well, anyone know?

AdminQBVerifex October 5 2011 7:27 PM EDT

He seems to be doing well, I wish that he had more free time to do CB, but it's okay. That's why NS and I are here.

Elf X.7plus35k October 5 2011 7:32 PM EDT

So, I just want to focus on getting more users and keeping them here.

Wouldn't a good place to start to make that a possibility is with the rules not being exactly fair or consistent from admin to admin or even from op to op? Just my two cents worth *shrug*

I have many thoughts on how to do this and how to address it but it might be a bit ''long'' and time consuming to read :P

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 5 2011 7:42 PM EDT

i got sidetracked earlier, my point is basically if we have 10,000 regulations on the books or just one it will always come down to a human on the other end of these admin tags that has to make a decision. a good real world example is speed limits. in texas, the max speed limit, in most areas, is 70. you can usually drive 75 and get away with it. if they really want to cite you though if you are driving 71 you are breaking the law.

if you are truly in need of very black and white rules, then here goes:

1. respect each other and each others opinion
2. if you question whether you should say or send something, then don't
3. be nice to each other

in the heat of the moment it can be difficult to follow those. do your best most of the time and you should be fine. if someone else doesn't do this, ignore them if it is in chat or in a cm. their lack of self-regulation does not give you equal freedom.

wow, i sound like that little book:
