Fight Feed Graphics (in General)

Reyth October 11 2011 7:30 PM EDT

Anyone thing it'd be kewl to see a graphical respresentation of battles?

I am well aware that this will never happen on this server and of course its a secondary and even superfluous game element.

Still, the idea of pasting the output text into a program that will represent that output graphically has appeal to me.

I can relatively easily code such a thing in BASIC but the graphics would be 2-D top down ASCII. I would suspect that someone with a better coding language and the ability to design actual graphics could do a much better job.

Anyway, just an idea floating through my head. I do half expect this thread to die. XD

AdminTal Destra October 11 2011 7:31 PM EDT

would be awesome but you wouldn't be able to do it for every fight....

QBRanger October 11 2011 7:45 PM EDT

Not to say your idea is not a good one. It is just the Devs think otherwise.

Per the FAQ

Q: I have a great idea for adding graphics!

A: Graphics in modern games have to be incredibly good to qualify as non-lame. The days are long gone where you could get by with a few tiles and sprites. If Carnage Blender were to add graphics, they would have to be non-lame graphics. If you think about it, lame graphics are much, much worse than no graphics at all. (If you don't think about it, go away. I'm not going to argue the point.) So why doesn't Carnage Blender add state-of-the-art really cool graphics?

Graphics don't add gameplay. So return on investment is very, very low.
There are very few pages that could accommodate graphics without displacing more important information in the user interface.
Thanks to the magic of gzip compression, Carnage Blender's text interface gets by very well on a relatively small amount of bandwidth. Adding 10k of images would triple the average page size.

I suggested a similar idea before. I have seen someone post some cool stick man fighting sequences. This would make me smile. If the stick men could react according to events during the fight. I have no clue how or if it could work. Also some ppl could care less about that and also part of the catch is not having to endure graphics for each fight.

Hahaha excellent.

Ya I envision 2 sets of 4 circles with the enchantments displayed in a text box. Each action has a text description with a graphical animated representation.

Extremely simple but it would make analyzing fights more appealing imo.

AdminQBVerifex October 11 2011 8:40 PM EDT

It would be possible to add more fancy stuff to the feed. But all of it with a certain cost. For instance. Having 7 or 8 animations showing the battle outcome might be cpu intensive. It might slow it down a bit. It might be possible to use html5 elements to draw something happening too. But it would go against the basic tenets of the game not having "lame graphics" ;)

Reyth October 11 2011 8:58 PM EDT

Ya and I even agree with that principle. But having the option to examine a battle graphically seems appealing to me. My idea is to basically paste the feed into a form online or into wordpad for .txt and then simply output the results graphically in an entertaining way.

Just another way for the mind to analyze battles and such.

Btw, on the title "fight feed" I really meant battle output. :8}

Option to toggle on/off always stops the naysayers from saying nay.

Typical argument against would be "Resources could be spent elsewhere on more important problems"

Reyth October 11 2011 10:11 PM EDT

Ya, well this wouldn't even have to be using resources of the system. I mean I can write a stand alone program to do it; its just that someone that programs in a superior language to BASIC and could do actual graphics would do a better job than I would. :)

Sounds like a good user based project to me.

I'm not touching this, I don't like graphics.

Reyth October 11 2011 10:24 PM EDT

Exactly. :)

I will output a sample text to see what it looks like in my next post. :)

I can see the most difficult part will be determining every type of text that can be generated in battle. That is no small task because there are quite a number of possibile types of output.

A user on here, I forget who, did at one time simulate a CB battle using a final fantasy I kind of interface (that would be the NES variant upon which 8-bit Theatre was based).

Ok your second link is much better. I'm thinking drop the isometric view and just do top down; as long as its graphically displayed. Of course, if someone is talented enough to incorporate isometric graphics then more power to them. :D

Where I am at right now is basically needing to classify every type of hit, spell and skill and get the specific output text for each so they can be recognized and reported.
