4 days since her last log in. and she didn't seem happy on msn. i had to beg her not to quit, and guess what she hasn't even been on msn since then either.
I'm a little baffled at the hubbub over a 100k fine, this is a 1/1/05 user who in the midst of a tirade used an unpg acronym and a word commonly regarded as offensive at a level comparable to racial slurs.
I've fined myself a mil for a slip in chat, I fail to see the great crime in backing up an Admin Edit with a token fine. Warnings are for new users, if you haven't learned in six years how things work I don't know what to say. Consistency in fines is something we are shooting for, consider this an opening salvo.

If it was an acronym for or about a curse that is different.
However L3G0 has never done it in the past and quite often we see a warning.
Remember he came back to CB after a long time away from CB.
100k is a minimal fine for a long time user, I'll admit his time away from CB was not taken into account, but considering the diminutive amount (that word was worth more frankly) and resulting poonami from the resident peanut gallery I'm not particularly sorry.

thanks ranger but its pretty pointless by now. I've given up. They can have there hypocritical rules. Hell used in a negative context is just as bad as any other word. yet they use it. I don't care if its a place or not one of the 7 dirty words not allowed on TV.
when you use a word in a negative context, like calm the hell down. its just as bad as saying the s word... but if i were to tell you to go to hell I'd get in trouble, but why. GO THERE, VISIT, TAKE A VACATION, STAY A WHILE, why should i get in trouble, its no different. then saying calm the hell down.

A
While in the past there has been a huge gap in the abilities and consistency of admins, I truly believe this set cares about CB.
However calling them out on consistencies is needed.
Even though the PG rules has been unevenly enforced, it is the rule and I hope the admins in the future fine ALL that break it. Not only those they do not like or know as in the past.
Personally, I have confidence this crew can. But close oversight by us normal players is always needed.
Lets try this again...
Did you or did you not use an unpg acronym?
Is the word contained in that acronym known to be among those that are fine worthy when posted in forums?
Are you a veteran user with a history long enough to know better?
Any word can be used in a 'negative connotation'. I could call someone a paperweight (innocuous in itself) as a insult.
Maybe I'm comparing them to a useless object that's just used to keep things still. Or thing they're dense and of only ornamental value.
Or I could be using paperweight in an innocent manner.
But.
There are some words that just don't, and can never, have an 'innocent' use.
These are the words we can't use here, and are moderated.
Bastard is a good example. It *can* be used as a vulgar curse. Or it can be used to describe a type of Sword (as it is in game), or even a person born out of wedlock.
I'm sure intent is also moderated. I could ask to buy a Bastard Sword on the forums, but if I called another CBer a Bastard (or a paperweight) as an insult, I'd expect to get fined for doing so.
I used to know a gamer many moons ago who went by the handle of Bastard Knight (probably inspired by the old and little known game Bastard! but I can't remember sadly), and have often thought of naming a CB character after him. ;)
Then again, we can also have PG fun. Just look to Carry On, or other double entendres for inspiration. Such as claiming you have the biggest BoNE or largest CoC.
>;)
TH3 C0113CT0R
December 21 2011 5:40 PM EST
oh so saying "calm the hell down" is all right even though your using it negatively.
yes, I think that has been established
negativity isn't what got you fined, using an acronym forbidden by the rules did
Google 'Clam down dear'. From the TV car insurance add to David Cameron using it in the House of Commons.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/apr/27/cameron-calm-down-dear-sexist-put-down
I imagine the Conservative PR machine will be going into overdrive over the next 24 hours or so as the outcry over David Cameron's hideously sexist and patronising instruction to Angela Eagle MP to "Calm down, dear!" during prime minister's questions this morning refuses to die down.
Perhaps he thought he was being trendy by quoting from an advert that, let's be frank, was already 20 years out of date when it first aired on our TV screens nine years ago. Or perhaps he genuinely thought it was a funny, inoffensive remark to make to a female MP. Whatever his excuse turns out to be though, any woman who watched this morning's exchange will be able to attest that "Calm down, dear" is neither humorous nor edgy; it is instead a classic sexist put-down, designed to shut women up and put them back "in their place".

I've never heard of that show, or heard any reference to that ever. And hell if I would ever put someone down in that respect if they though of it that way. so basically how I see it now, it telling me to calm down in any respect is insulting. wow I feel so much better now. especially when I was told "calm the HELL down".
what a joke.
Sometimes I shout at Emma to 'reboot' her.
It shocks her into stopping whatever tantrum she's currently throwing.
On the other hand, shouting at her when she's just playing nicely would get me all sorts of looks though.
Lord Bob
December 21 2011 6:13 PM EST
but if I called another CBer a Bastard (or a paperweight) as an insult, I'd expect to get fined for doing so.
But this is not how it works here. I have been called names, and had many insults hurled at me here. I think most of you know what I'm referring to. No fine was levied, nor even so much as an admin edit was applied to those posts.
But if I say "I'm having a [curse]ing good time here, and this game [curse]ing rules!" that is subject to a fine, despite the fact that no insult, no hostility, and indeed even no negativity was expressed whatsoever.
A link to a really funny George Carlin sketch is prohibited here, even if my intent is only to entertain you fine people. A slanderous hate speech from Ann Coulter? Fair game. And this is why I have advocated removing the PG rule in favor of punishing hostility and insults instead.
But this is not how it works here. I have been called names, and had many insults hurled at me here.
This is not what we're striving for btw.
Lord Bob
December 21 2011 6:18 PM EST
This is not what we're striving for btw.
What do you mean here? You're not striving to punish insults and other bad behavior so you can police a collection of harmless words regardless of their context? Or you're not striving to let stuff like that go and will do better in the future?
Lol, sorry didn't realize that could be seen in two different lights.
This is what I meant:
Or you're not striving to let stuff like that go and will do better in the future?
LB, that particular curse has no other definition than a vulgar one.
You could alwasy use 'Frag' from Battlestar Gallactica. Or my preference, Father Ted's 'Feck'. ;)
Although I doubt the word bought to the publics attention through the show 'Porridge' would be acceptable here.
Lord Bob
December 21 2011 6:25 PM EST
LB, that particular curse has no other definition than a vulgar one.
So? You're just making my point. Vulgarity is punished here. Attacks are not. It should be the opposite.
one is fairly easy to police, the other not so much...
even name calling has a huge subjective side
if we had to deal with every time someone felt attacked... sheesh!
It should be both.
If someone can't debate my points, and tries instead to attack me, they shouldn't be allowed to post here any longer (or for a while at least).
Well Nov, maybe we should have a method for people to report comments they feel have gone to far, and whether things like apologies would remedy the situation.
I totally agree that intent is far too subjective to divine, but that doesn't mean we should give up on it. ;)
You paperwieght! :P
(Illustrative purposes only! I am in no way comparing Nov to a useless ornament! And I apologise with my entire being for any offense that might have been caused!)
Lord Bob
December 21 2011 6:34 PM EST
It should be both.
No, it shouldn't. There are uses for those banned words that have nothing to do with offending anybody. Why punish someone for trying to express something positive, or telling a joke?
one is fairly easy to police, the other not so much...
Ah, so just keep punishing the thing that isn't harmful. Got it.
I vote to keep the PG rule just to keep the trolling to an executive level.
There are uses for those banned words that have nothing to do with offending anybody.
LB, There are words that have no other meaning than vulgar ones.
Like the word from Porridge. (I'll CM you it. ;) )
By definition, you can't use those words for anything else. Otherwise, they're not those words any longer. ;)
Lord Bob
December 21 2011 6:40 PM EST
LB, There are words that have no other meaning than vulgar ones.
Again, so what? Out of context, these words are not damaging at all. It is the way these words are used, and not the words themselves, that has the potential to be offensive. Punish the context if it is aggressive, not the word.
It is about the words themselves.
They have no other context than thier derogatory definition. You can't use them in any other way.
They're not like Bastard.
If you're using them, and trying to *not* be vulgar or degrogatory, you're using the wrong words. They don't mean anything else.
At that time over 50% of the people voted to keep the rule the same. I know we've changed since then. I wouldn't be against another poll, but I'm sure it's pretty similar.
TH3 C0113CT0R
December 21 2011 6:47 PM EST
that was my point earlier LB, why can i be told to "calm the hell down" hell is now being used in a derogatory context, thus as far as I'm concerned should be against the rules as well. not just IF I tell someone to go there. which is again using it in a derogatory way.
Lord Bob
December 21 2011 6:53 PM EST
It is about the words themselves.
Again, my point exactly.
Titan, see my responses on that very poll. My arguments are just as valid today.
----------
Get rid of it
We're all adults here. Ok, some of you may be late teens or young adults, but this is not a kiddie game. We don't need our language policed as if we were still in grade school. I'm a grown man and I don't need to be told to dumb down my language for those who think they're too sensitive to read it. It's censorship, pure and simple. If a few players go overboard with vulgarity, deal with them individually. But CB shouldn't be treated like the Disney forums.
----------
I've never seen Fex's RPG, but if it's as bad as you claim, it probably has to do more with immature players than a lack of censorship. I say punish the players who abuse the privilege of the forums, and let the rest of us decide how to use language responsibly.
----------
"Lord Bob I would love to understand how you say you have to "dumb down" your speak to keep it pg."
If I have to tip-toe around using certain words - not phrases, not attacks, not even ideas, just simple words - because some people are offended by a collection of letters that for whatever reason they have labeled as "bad," then yes, I see that as dumbing down my language.
"I can sort of see where you're coming from LB, but really, how much better would you express yourself with the removal of the PG rule?"
Glad you asked. I was just sent a hilarious video by my co-worker that I wanted to share with you all. I couldn't post it though, because it contains the dreaded f-bomb that for some inexplicable reason, you all decided you have a right not to read here.
"I don't see it as censorship,.."
You don't see being told what you can't say as censorship? I agree that we do need rules to prevent any inflammatory things on CB. For example, racist, sexist, insulting, etc. messages should be banned. But to pretend that profanity by itself, ignoring context, is offensive on it's own is ludicrous.
I think you all should watch that episode of Penn & Teller's show, whose title I cannot say because of this ridiculous PG rule, where they rename the show to Humbug.
----------
Plus a bunch of other posts I wrote in there that I'm not going to bother copying here.
Better to argue freedom of curse would bring in the players rather than right a wrong.
Your argument stalled Bob. =/ Dirty words are set in stone while insults are not. Heed my crude words for I am troll and must feed each lunar cycle.
