One chat room.

Yes, they(Noobs) need to be included in the CB social life, as soon as they sign up. Now, what I fear is players getting annoyed by them. Maybe new op policies would have to be thought of to protect their right to ask away stupid things? Also, first comment for me :)

:x

think most noobs get scared off by bast! :x hehe rofl j/k

8 out of 10 dentists say

newbies + veterans = fewer cavities

Helper

Well, generally people don't get too upset if you ask questions.

perhaps you could get a /helper command, or the like, which would list a few people they can PM for answers. If their in the NP room anyway to help.. they shouldn't mind too much ^.-

Knigits

He would be crying his eyes out tonight, his little baby...

However I never agreed with new players in the first place so bring on the chop imo

-- Mythology

if you merge, put on the automatic thing when entering chat, the "how to change rooms", along with the rooms and how many people are in them.

-- smallpau1 - Go Blues

Both rooms should be merged, in my opinion, for new players to be more interested, and thus perhaps get more to stay.

Option Alternate

"Yes, new players need a room to ask newbish questions, and they should be able to use 'carnage' without being rebuked."

That option gets my vote!

-- QBsutekh137

I vote yes, mostly so that there's a little more discussion in carnage. And rebuking newbies for asking questions should be a serious crime(especially if the rooms merge), first offense boot, second offense kill, any more is a fine and/or chat ban(does 48! still work? or would it be 720! instead?)

-- AvoidCXT

Ambiguous

I voted no. I did so because while I do think that the default chat room should be the same for both new players and veterans, I also think that a room for asking newbish questions should be provided. You might say "isn't that what NP is at the moment?" but it actually isn't. Most of the (admittedly limited) conversation in new players is, from what I can tell, just that: conversation; not questions about strats. And yet there is very little conversation going on in there because there are so few people in there. So, yes, merge the rooms, but make a new room "Advice" or something, where anyone can ask any question without fear of being rebuked. Now we just need multiple-channel joining - see the chat client bounties in contests ;-)

I'd be happy for newbs to enter room carnage by default and immediately enter into the "community spirit", however if we go down that route then vets and ops must exhibit a greater degree of tolerance than present. Often newbs on arrival chat in the same way as they do on MSN with what we consider to be un-PG acronyms the norm. If they're greeted with 10 people shouting "PG" and a group of Ops rushing to kick them then they will end up wondering what they've got themselves into or worse be provoked to a further outburst that could finish their CB career before it began.
It's all about balance. The Ops that spend the majority of time in New Players are excellent at coaching our newbs in CB etiquette and that's something that I'm not quite sure our /room Carnage majority are ready for.

I vote "Yes, new players need to feel part of the community sooner " but I'm not quite sure how it will work out. I think we need to keep a place where newbs can feel safe asking "dumb" questions because I'm not convinced we're up to it in /room Carnage right now. Remember why we went down this route in the first place... :/

Erg... need another choice

I would love for new players to be in "carnage". It's the veterans that spend their time policing new players like prison guards that I would rather not see in carnage... The biggest complaint I ever hear from new players is how they are treated in that room, so I'd hate to have to deal with it myself. I've just been starting to get back into chat in recent months, and I would not like to give it up again.

-- AdminNightStrike

I voted yes. I remember when New Players chat was lively, it was awesome! If you were just joining a game and saw that chat was full of activity with people talking about strats and items, or just being friendly, then it makes it look more interesting than just an empty chat box. And G brings up some good points about new players and chat. If they still got the "welcome back to CB "name" when they entered chat that would give the Op's a little heads up that hey this guys new so maybe give him a warning about nonpg acronyms and explain to him that PG is the key here instead of just racing to boot him.

-- Adminedyit

edyit, that was my point not to kick us all out of NP to begin with, and now were talking about bringing it all together. lol. Seems like we should've just left it like it was 6(?) months ago.

-- smallpau1 - Go Blues

Thanks

Thanks Jon. And thanks CB for supporting it.

-- BootyGod

yes

this coming from a relative noob, i myself have asked numerous questions in chat without getting rebuked. I've seen other people ask questions that I thought were pretty dumb and noone else in the room jumped down thier throaght. Perhaps the CB community isnt as tough a crowd as it percieves itself to be. Possibly, I know nothing.

-- mikes wanton rage

doesn't matter much...

Can't tell you how many times I was having a normal (at least, by our standards) conversation in new players, then would go to carnage once it died down, only to be asked many newbish questions. But it also works the other way too... I say they should stay split because I can't imagine Bast, Angel of Death, and Ranger all in the same room at the same time...

-- TheHatchetman

Bast not bad, Bast good

"think most noobs get scared off by bast! :x hehe rofl j/k"

Bast is the reason why I even stuck around as long as I did (still here). Meeting her in NP and her discussing with me about the wiki (I had never used one) and just being generally nice in a situation that I was uncertain of.

-- Silatt

I think we should keep New Players. I remember when I joined CB and there was no New Players room, Carnage was scary. I know things are a lot different now but noobs still need that place to go and be noobs. I think what we need here, rather then shove everyone in one room, is more active helpful people in New Players.

-- SundariZelia

Hmmm...

Maybe a lumpbot-style bot to help the new players. I remember when I was first getting into CB1, Lumpbot was probably the most help.

-- SaintChristopher

iirc it never really helped them now did it?

I mean, they got/get information there but never stay either long enough for the game or long enough in there because they want to talk about more and different things.

Also it isn't as crowded anymore as it once was.

-- AdminShade

Just a thought

I liked chat best when you could freely bounce from room to room and see what was going on without fear of reprimand. (6 - 9 months ago). My activity in chat has died down enormously since then, and I think that is a good portion of it.

Rather than having "noob" and "carnage" Couldn't we just have a room geared to general chat, and one geared to strat (CB) talk. Obviously this would have some growing pains in deciding how much non-CB chatter would be tolerated in CB chat....

I think everyone needs options and that noobs should have the same options and be mixed right in with the vets. It keeps things more interesting and fresh for everyone.

-- velvetpickle

strat talk

There is more strat talk going on in carnage - it would be useful for NPs to see this also. A resounding Yes for the merger

-- Phrede

New players don't get rebuked

I've seen new players come into carnage a lot and ask noob questions, no one snaps or anything at them, they answer them nicely.

-- Flamey

A better solution

Instead of the proposed idea, I vote for allowing people to join multiple rooms at once.

-- AdminNightStrike

Status quo please

As someone who spent a lot of time in new players, I feel it is absolutely necessary. The major reason is that it cultivates friendships between new players, and that develops rivalries between them as the progress, thus making them stick around longer. In addition, the room makes it much easier to identify new players so that help can be offered. And despite what other people think, it is much less likely that someone will ask a question in carnage if they think it might earn them a rebuke. In many other games you do get made fun of for asking ''dumb" questions in chat, and new players may not know that that doesn't happen in cb.

-- Miandrital

New players are designed to give Todd an unfair advantage.

-- phrog

New player's isn't what it used to be.

I remember when me and many others sued to hang around in new players, chat amongst ourselves, whilst helping out new players. This gave them a sense of hospitality yet the help they need. Now in new players, it is like dead...? How can they feel a part of the game now that the room is too segregated, when the new rules were put in and half the vets kicked out it ruint it.

If this poll happened near the begining then I would be all for the new palyers room. Now they should merge.
