Do we still need the 'non-tournament rewards'? (in General)

Xiaz on Hiatus May 10 2005 9:04 AM EDT

Seeing as CB2 doesn't host a weekly tournament (maybe just not yet), do we still need the '... non-tournament rewards..." in the bonus notice?

Maybe it should be removed, eventually, because some new player may be confused as to what tournament the notice is refering to...

changed

AdminShade May 10 2005 9:22 AM EDT

while we're at it why not change:

"so what if this guy offering me a loch for $100k is scamming me, all I have to is whine to the admins to get my money back."

from public record policy to a more popular and more valued weapon of CB2?

i'm still getting non-tournament when i fight..

This kind of change is usually not reflected in-game until after cache flush. I suspect it'll be updated later.

I would like to see the tournies make a comeback

AdminJonathan May 10 2005 11:06 AM EDT

There are very good reasons why tournaments aren't a good idea in CB2. Even private agreed when I pointed them out to him.

QBRanger May 10 2005 11:08 AM EDT

I think I know the answer to my upcoming question but I have to ask?

Care to share with the masses why tournaments are a bad idea in cb2?

This coming from someone who just started playing cb1 in Dec of 2004 and has never entered a tournament.

Thanks

What are the good things about tournaments in CB1? Are there reasons those are weaker in CB2? What are the bad things about tournaments in CB1? Are those stronger in CB2?

Good things: quick money, especially useful for newbies (but here they already have the newbie bonus).
Moreover, "time concentration": you have one week to make it (adrenaline rush?).
Occasion to try different strategies, and to learn everything about "how to build a char form scratch".

Bad things? Which bad things?

I would say that CB tourneys are a different (albeit similar) game from CB: the strategies you can use and the way you fight are completely different from the normal ones.

i think tourny's are good because it adds a different way to play. if a guy focuses on tournament play he can add cash or good items to his main char. i think cb1 tourny's were to complex however and need to be more accessible to newer players. i think tournaments are also good for collecting fines so that if player A cheats the community we have a chance to recover those goods instead of Central Bank just deleting them.

Black Market -> Claymore.

Some other observations:

Decay at 10K XP makes this spell even deadlier on a tournament char.
But there is the established tradition of not allowing decay in tourneys.

In CB1 there is plenty of "zombies" (namely, dead characters which have not been retired yet), and that make tourneys a bit boring (all you have to do is to find some high PR zombie to farm). Here instead there are much less undead, and tourneys could be more interesting.

You need someone policing the tourneys, otherwise all kind of unpleasant thing can happen.
But that is "only" a question of finding some willing, able and trustworthy people to do the job.

Black Market -> Claymore.

Not sure what that meant.?

As I stated before I have not played tournaments in cb1 so I dont know the good and the bad points.

Thats why I asked the question in the first place.

Tourneys were a good way to make quick money when you were new - I made enough in 2 tourneys to buy a decent exec and an adam - that's only two weeks fighting. I also tried out a couple of strats for size and enjoyed fighting in such a competetive way.

But the changes to DD spells in CB2 would mean that probably the easiest way to gain power quickly in a tourney would be to go CoC Mage. And if everyone that fought did that it would be a bit pointless and boring wouldn't it?

I did miss tourneys for a while but that was mainly because of the money! =)

strategies can be (and was in CB1) regulated by rules.
I think tourneys were very amusing, and find it sad that they won't be used in CB2

Ranger: I thought this thread was about small corrections in texts in this game?

Probably the easiest way to gain power quickly in a tourney would be to go CoC Mage.

That is also an easy way to gain power quickly in CB1: start FB mage, switch to CoC when you have enough exp. However, you often need more than 1 minion to survive ranged, and this is even truer here, where CoC does not fire until melee.

Anyhow, nobody uses tanks (unless obliged by the rules, or it is an arena tourney), since mages are much more effective against high PR chars (I mean nobody that wants to win the tourney).

However, as MM pointed out, it is up to the imagination of the organizer(s) to make so that "non-standard" chars remain competitive. One of the best ones (IMO) for instance was the T150 - In honor of private, where all kind of strats appeared.
