Sidebar improvements (in Changelog)

No new widgets this time. See if you can spot the differences.
(This is another improvement by Verifex, who put a lot of time into it. I think it improves the experience immensely. Thanks!)

My enter does not work, I can search by user though.

October 25 2005 4:53 PM EDT
Ah, the width of the drop down lists are now determined by the longest character name in the list, instead of the current character name. Now we don't have the sidebar resizing each time we fight - nice! :)

it seems some of the top half of my sidebar does not work correctly.
I cannot change characters, go to standard fight list, or search by user
1.The "Lower" button is NOT going lower, I don't know about Higher button 'cause there is not really anyone else.
2. changed score ->mpr in supportership option. Refresh the sidebar. Nothing changed.
3. BarzooMonkey is flooding/spamming my Supreme Chatroom (browser crash?):P

When hovering over Stats >> Items the "overview", "normal" and "tattoos" words vanish behind the main game screen.
Using Firefox version 1.0.7
Same with IE latest version
move back second frame 3 tabs. :P
Browser crash, and how! - I went to change characters and it gave me unending "frames within frames" until I could finally turn chat off...

Mikel had to disable Greasemonkey to get his buttons to work. If you're using FF, try that if you're having problems.

October 25 2005 5:18 PM EDT
Dunno what else has changed, but if 'not refreshing sidebar while changing characters' means an even lower chance of finding out about news items and polls, then I don't like it...
AdminJonathan
October 25 2005 5:23 PM EDT
that will be addressed in version 1.1.

refresh the sidebar. We just fixed that for people who don't check the "remember this address" login box.
Dolphin
October 25 2005 5:39 PM EDT
this works for me:
1.- Log out
2.- check "Remember this address and password"
3.- Log in
the refresh link was not enough to see the changes.
Good work Verifex, congrats!!
AdminJonathan
October 25 2005 5:40 PM EDT
It was fixed literally about 60s before I posted. So if you were refreshing earlier, yeah, it was still broken then.
No answer from : unable to view mpr in opponent's list? (anyone else beside me have the same problem?)

Oh yeah, now it's working - is that ever slick! Way to go Verifex!
When you switch characters, or switch between Standard/Favorites, or view Higher/Lower, only the fight list re-loads. The rest of the sidebar stays the same. And while loading, it says "... Loading ..." in the fight list :)

October 25 2005 6:00 PM EDT
awsome :)
Thanks everybody for helping bug check this. I tried to work out most of the kinks before releasing it. But within minutes of release it seems we got the most bug-check feedback, and I think we've addressed most of the concerns.

Not sure why this happened but when i switched to my character 'HR22' then switched back to 'Razor', 'Razor' and HR22 had the same score, it was fixed after a refresh though. Not sure if it is re-occuring.
Also when i switch to my charcter 'HR22' (he has a standard fight list) then i switch back to 'Razor' (has a favorite list) It changes Razor's list to Standard inside of keeping it on Favorites. (but it seems to have the same opponets on my favorite list, but still says 'Standard')
Not sure if it is something wrong or not, just letting ya know.
When it says standard it is on favorites, when it says favorites, it is on standard, that "standard" is for you to click to goto standard.

October 25 2005 9:53 PM EDT
I notice that when you click higher/lower that is stays on the button you click instead of going back to the fightlist. Before you could just keep fighting without having to click on the list, I think.
QBRanger
October 25 2005 11:22 PM EDT
great change, however now I am unable to fight from my Treo. the program will not now acknowledge a double press/click on the fight link.
QBRanger
October 25 2005 11:32 PM EDT
the only way to fight now from a treo is to view a character and fight via the fight link in their overview.
AdminQBVerifex
October 25 2005 11:44 PM EDT
On your TReo, can you click "higher" or "lower" or any of the other functions besides fight? The fight button has very few restrictions on whether or not it works.
QBRanger
October 25 2005 11:49 PM EDT
The fight, inspect and standard buttons do not work. I am on favorites list now and cannot get to standard opponents. I refreshed, deleted my cache and cookies all without helping me. I can only fight via the inspect character page.

Verifex, we discussed this previously but I can't quite remember if you explained that the problem was solely with FF or if it's a CB thing.
I can't use the mouse scroll wheel to navigate through the Opponents list and would like to have this option if it's "fixable" as a result of your sidebar work.
I know you don't use the wheel yourself but I find that it's really handy using it when I either have a beer in my other hand or only a few BA to use ;)
QBRanger
October 26 2005 8:00 AM EDT
ok, I am beginning to have a major problem with fighting from my treo. can we go back to the old sidebar so it is good for everyone until the bugs are all worked out? as I have no power for likely 2 weeks, this is becoming quite frustrating.
QBRanger
October 26 2005 8:12 AM EDT
they say at least 2 weeks, some places up to 4. So please can we go back to the previous version of the sidebat??

I can't change characters. Even when I switch browsers to IE, where - until recently - everything except "fight" worked fine. (IE 5.2, Mac OS 9.2)
AdminJonathan

IE 5.2 is definitely not supported. Neither is Safari.
Firefox should work fine.
QBRanger
October 26 2005 11:47 AM EDT
Jon,
For those of us on a mobile, we do not have a choice in the browser that is used (I think, please correct me if I can wrong).
Do you have any solution to the problem I am experiencing on my Treo?
Any work around you can think of?
It is important to me, since I fight about 1/3 my battles from work on the Treo.
AdminJonathan
October 26 2005 12:11 PM EDT
I do not have a solution for people who use treos to fight (all 1? 2?), but in general terms you fall into the same category as mac IE 5.2 users: not a big enough category to be worth buying hardware and spending hours on compatibility work. Sorry.
QBBarzooMonkey
October 26 2005 12:44 PM EDT
Orkamat, CB2 on Netscape 7 on a Mac OS 9.x works fine for me - that could be an option for you?
Arorrr
October 26 2005 1:00 PM EDT
If this is very small cosmetic change and it makes some "unsupported" browser not working properly, why can't you change it back to previous version? At least it works for those unfortunate forks that fall into that unsupported browser catagory.
What is a big deal with "changing characters and Opponents auto refresh" feature? We the users can click on the "Refresh" ourselves with less a hassle.
BrandonLP
October 26 2005 1:01 PM EDT

There's an old saying, it goes something along the lines of:
"If it ain't broken, don't fix it"
AdminJonathan
October 26 2005 1:49 PM EDT
This is 2005. It's time for CB to start using modern web techniques. Some barely-used browsers will no longer work. I'm willing to pay that price for progress.
Special J
October 26 2005 1:54 PM EDT
I know operah has a mobile version, and there are several browsers that are made for mobile use.
I would assume is is broken because the browser does not support XML/HTTP requests.
Orkamat
October 26 2005 2:23 PM EDT
Jonathan: There is no firefox for Mac OS 9.2
Barzoo: *Amazing*! A browser that (almost) works! :) Works far better than the other four I've tried, at least. Life sucks on minority hardware.
QBRanger
October 26 2005 3:13 PM EDT
But if there is a bug that is making a few browsers that used to work, not work, how about trying to fix those bugs before making the changes permanent.
Or making an option to use the upgrade or not.
Arorrr
October 26 2005 3:18 PM EDT
Ranger,
May be if you had bribed Kitty and it became a Kitty problem, it would have been fixed by now. We don't want to alienate NUB players now, do we.
But then again, it's Ranger. So, it's YOURS problem.
(it's a joke, don't take it seriously). 8^)
{CB3}-HR22
October 26 2005 3:19 PM EDT
What was the point of this change and how is it a "modern web technique".
If it does not work on some players PC's/Portables then why change it. Just making the players more frustrated?
I ripped this browser test from some site somewhere, and modified it to add xmlhttp requests to the test. Try it out:
http://www.defhoboz.biz/browser-test.html
It will tell you for sure if you can use these new changes on CB.
AdminJonathan
October 26 2005 4:14 PM EDT
Ranger: fundamentally the bug is with your browsers, not with the new code. So "fixing the bug" means "hours of trying to find a workaround" that must be repeated for each browser that doesn't play by the rules.
I'm not willing to cripple future CB development by targetting the least common denominator. This has always been CB's philosophy; we've never supported opera or omniweb or safari, etc.

Jonathan: If you don't wish to waste time supporting browsers that don't follow the rules, IE should be the first browser removed from your test base. MS has never believed in following any rules except their own, and even those they tend to bend or break when writing software for Mac OS. You'd almost think they had some reason for "encouraging" the entire world to run only their own OS and software.
:)) nice i like it.. also finally the lil arrows change color with changing the theme.. no ugly red/blue combo anymore now.. blue as well with the blue theme.. nice lil change :P

October 27 2005 10:04 AM EDT
Actually, Orkamat, Jon has consistently responded to IE support requests with, "Get a real browser."
Discussing Microsoft's limitations to Jon is preaching to the choir, but ranting to him about the vast Redmond conspiracy is bellowing off key to that choir.
Finally, to anticipate the typical response, I am the family Mac zealot. If you don't see the relevance of that statement: Congratulations, you weren't going to make the typical response.
Orkamat
October 27 2005 10:51 AM EDT
Okay. I get a little testy when I'm told that my system is too marginal to be worth supporting, and I tend to suspect MS brainwash when I hear it.
If Explorer joins Opera, Safari and others in the "not a real browser" category, it seems to me that the "real browser" category must have a very small membership. Perhaps the select few browsers that one should use or go home should be listed prominently on the pre-registration page. This would have saved me, for one, a great deal of frustration and more than a few software crashes.
AdminJonathan
October 27 2005 11:24 AM EDT
the "real browser" and the "worth supporting" groups are not identical.

Orkamat
October 27 2005 12:57 PM EDT
I was rather hoping that in addition to (not) calling me an idiot, you might give some indication of where I could find out WHAT browsers are supported and whether I could perhaps even hope that the last browser to partially work on my system might continue to partially work for a while longer.
I'll take that as an "eff off" and reply "same to you".
Using Camino on OS X and having fightlist issues. was working a few hours ago....
This is a mozilla derived browser browser here folks...shouldn't I be alright?
repeated refresh seemed to solve...no issues on FF for Mac OS X
I would find it really interesting to learn the breakdown of browsers hitting the site.
Perhaps it's close to the site I work on:
IE: 66.03%
Uncategorized: 12.37%
Firefox: 10.78%
Unknown: 5.41%
Netscape: 3.57%
Robots: 1.77%
AOL: 1.17%
Safari: 0.59%
Opera: 0.21%
Wireless: 0.10%

October 27 2005 1:45 PM EDT
Orkamat, it should be obvious from how regularly it is mentioned: Firefox is the "official" CB browser.
Um... that wasn't a backhanded comment. I'm seriously interested in the stats.
I expect that firefox has a much higher share of the pie here and would like to know just how big a percentage it is.

Small problem with opponents list and fighting... if you specify a character then go off of the character to fight somebody else it won't let you fight anybody but that specified character until you refresh the side bar.. no matter who I selected it only wanted to fight the specify character that I had added but was not select on.....
I'd like to confirm DAWG's bug report. Specify is definitely broken.
I've been using IE for a long time on my laptop. The game is broken now and unplayable all of a sudden.
So, who cares anyway?
Synco
October 29 2005 4:59 PM EDT
I just tried IE. I don't see how it's unplayable.
And "You may also purchase BA: up to 556 more today at the Manage Characters page" message needs to be removed.
i just had a problem with every link asking if i was sure i wanted to navigate away from the page, (Refresh everything and chat), on each thing i would click on: Active threads, Home, etc.
The problem with specify chars will be fixed soon, the link on the out of BA page will be changed also. These are all little problems and will be fixed. The sky is NOT falling. ;P
