Reminder: Idle Rooms Not Allowed (in Public Record)

SNK3R August 28 2006 7:02 PM EDT

Upon entering chat this afternoon, I get the following start-up screen:

Chat Blender 3.1.7 starting...
Existing rooms:
BANE: 1 users
Bubble Wrap: 1 users
hiding: 1 users
KoRn: 1 users
Demon Squad: 1 users
moto*s minions: 1 users
Soup Ream: 1 users
Angel of Death's room: 1 users
Kittens Lair: 6 users
new players: 14 users
carnage: 16 users

I went to all 8 rooms that had 1 user and had to kick them due to them not responding for being idle. Idle rooms are not allowed, and you should stay in carnage if you feel to do so.

ChatOPs are reminded to check for idle rooms regularly.

SBW August 28 2006 7:12 PM EDT

duude, i was burning BA.. that's not afk

SNK3R August 28 2006 7:13 PM EDT

You didn't respond, so the assumption was you were idle. Thus, you were kicked. Next time, respond when someone asks you, "Are you here? :)".

SBW August 28 2006 7:14 PM EDT

hehe i'll try to notice. but keep up the good work SNK. CB needs good admins always active like that! Props to SNK

Stephen August 28 2006 8:22 PM EDT

SNK3R is now channeling MrsDi

SNK3R August 28 2006 8:24 PM EDT

I only follow Jon's instructions...

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 28 2006 8:24 PM EDT

Did his head spin around and everything?

WeaponX August 28 2006 8:31 PM EDT

i don't like this rule. i stay in my room because i don't like carnage. idle rooms do not damage the game and unless i'm mistaken the chat system should have nothing to do with server load. whats the fuss?

SNK3R August 28 2006 8:38 PM EDT

Read up on several posts about AFK rooms:

One, Two, Three (most recent), Four

WeaponX August 28 2006 8:42 PM EDT

still doesn't explain why its needed

SNK3R August 28 2006 8:43 PM EDT

You can't be telling me it took you 4 minutes to read every single post on those threads...

SBW August 28 2006 8:51 PM EDT

SNK, can you sum it up for us then? why the rule is necessary?

WeaponX August 28 2006 8:56 PM EDT

im a speed reader bro :)

SNK3R August 28 2006 9:03 PM EDT

Max sums it up well:
I see a problem with being afk in a user created room. I have been kicked myself after nodding off or just forgetting to log out. Personally, I don't see a big deal with being kicked for being afk in a room that is not New Players or Carnage. If we didn't we would have a zillion rooms.

Having open connections to the server for no reason is partly why it is enforced.
And if you still don't like any of those answers, the best one is that Jon makes the rules up so follow them, or take it up with him. :)

SBW August 28 2006 9:09 PM EDT

just for my info, is there any penalty for doing it constantly and getting kicked constantly?

Flamey August 30 2006 1:54 AM EDT

so if we're AFK, what do we do? be in 'carnage' and ignore everyone?

can't we have an AFK room?

and i know i probably missed something, so flame away :)

SNK3R August 30 2006 2:41 AM EDT

SBW: If there wasn't, one would just do it anyway.

Flamey: If you're going to go idle, either (a) logout, or (b) join carnage. It's that easy to understand. If you want a permanent AFK room, go ask Jon and see what he says.

AdminShade August 30 2006 2:43 AM EDT

Afk rooms flood/spam the chat entry window and therefore aren't approved of.

bartjan August 30 2006 3:44 AM EDT

Just be glad that SNK3R is nice to only /kick you, as the original policy dictates a /kill :)

chappy [Soup Ream] August 30 2006 8:39 AM EDT

This is silly to me ... I log onto CB from work and obviously I'm not sitting in front of my computer screen all the time .. If I'm not allowed to be afk then I'll be resorting to disabling chat or joining room carnage and ignoring everyone. I don't like to ignore people so that is why I join alternate rooms. I'd prefer to not disable chat as well, but if that is my only other option ... *shrug*

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 30 2006 10:38 AM EDT

I tend to wonder why anyone uses the built in chat at all...full screen baby!

AdminShade August 30 2006 11:06 AM EDT

chappy: if you don't use chat while at work, then disable it for your own convenience...

then open chat in a separate window when you do want to chat, only a few seconds work...

Genie August 30 2006 9:13 PM EDT

SNK3R just came in on me and i replied, don't know how late, but it's only because looked toward the bottom of the play by play and seen it. Maybe the Chat OP's can check the persons battle log before they kick them also? (if they don't already. :P) the reason i went to my own room was so I could Burn ba quicker without any chatting. :)

QBRanger August 30 2006 9:19 PM EDT

Gosh Dang (PG version of what I'm really thinking).

So you get kicked, big deal. Just refresh when your back, no problem.

Genie August 30 2006 9:26 PM EDT

Yeah i know Ranger, but some people are lazy (not saying i wouldn't just type it again. big deal.) I was just wondering if they do / would.

AdminG Beee August 30 2006 10:38 PM EDT

I don't check battle logs, but then again some people are lazy ;)

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] August 31 2006 12:50 AM EDT

Oh, for pity's sake!

It can be done with a minimum of harassment to those who, for no imaginable reason, aren't engaging with the chat hoi polloi.

First, you can check on the keyboard presence of anyone without actually barging in on them. This is accomplished by a /who and a PM. Go through every room at once, wait five minutes. If you've no concept of what five minutes is, feel free to use this time to check the battlelogs of nonresponders.

Go visit those who have not responded. It takes up more lines and is, therefore, more visible. Make a general inquiry of some kind. More lines! Move on to the next room.

As another five minutes or so has now elapsed, make a final tour of the rooms. Make noise, rifle through personal effects, add a little personal graffito to each room if you must. Should you still get no response, you may assume that a reasonable time has elapsed for anyone not responding to be truly away. Long enough for a trip to the loo, a refilling of one's coffee, the nabbing of a sandwich, an Australian's shower, answering the door or telephone, shooing away one's employer, etc.

Empty the room and move on. If you care to do so as someone just completing one of the many onerous chores for which you are responsible, and not as someone who thoroughly enjoys being a complete hemorrhoid, do it with a minimum of self-important commentary.

Mem August 31 2006 9:49 AM EDT

Why don't you just close down chat when you go, Bast? I'm not going to wait ten minutes for anyone to come back to their keyboard.

QBsutekh137 August 31 2006 10:07 AM EDT

Because she's Bast-alicious.

QBRanger August 31 2006 10:08 AM EDT

I would have to say that the rules apply to all players with the exception of Jon.

Whether it is a regular player, an ops, or even an admin, idle chat rooms are not allowed.

So if your in a chat room, and idle, suck up the kick and move on.

Those who are checking the chat rooms have far better things to do than sit and wait for anyone to get back from going to the loo, making coffee, etc.

Those better things include actually playing the game and participating in chat.

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] August 31 2006 10:38 AM EDT

Okay, to clarify, as far back as Myth's great crusade: back when I was the only one doing the checking with any regularity, of course I made accommodation for the fact that some people answer the phone.

I made a tour once or twice a night, those who weren't responsive within the 15-minutes-or-so that it takes were deemed truly AFK and booted accordingly. This was a concession to general civility and the fact that this is a game, not Qwest On-Demand Tech Support -- those guys are always right at their monitors!. It also kept the complaints to a minimum (other than Myth, naturally) since no one could legitimately say it was a matter of OP capriciousness that he or she had looked away to clean Cheeto Orange from a mouse and been unceremoniously booted.

If it's too onerous a task for you personally to manage with a degree of politesse, leave it to someone who can. As I get several drop-ins during the short periods of time that I'm managing my CMs, it's clear that there are enough OPs heeding the reminder.

BootyGod August 31 2006 11:22 AM EDT

lol the song Cry me a River just fits so many situations in the game lately.

But I agree with Ranger on this one. You get kicked big whoop, just go back.

The only thing I say to temper this is once against that Ranger has right idea. Many ops (including some of my friends) go idle in these rooms from time to time. As long as equal time is given to allt here is no reason why people shouldn't be kicked out. Like bartjan asid... at least he isn't killing everyone.

QBsutekh137 August 31 2006 11:35 AM EDT

Bast, give up the logic and "middle-ground" thinking. It's clearly lost on most everyone here.

But I appreciate your efforts and couldn't agree with you more. Thank you for your rationality and diligence. I might have to wrangle on into an idle room just to have you drop in! *smile*

Rubberduck[T] [Hell Blenders] August 31 2006 12:00 PM EDT

I agree with Bast. I accept its a rule but couldn't we have some policy understood by all as to how the rule is to be enforced ? Right now it seems open season for any OP to PM someone, get no response then kick them, sometimes going on to brag about it in carnage.
I agree a kick really means nothing however SNK3R told carnage yesterday that any OP finding AoD AFK could kill him and refer him for a fine. It just seems ridiculous when any OP can interpret AFKness for themselves when some of them seem incapable of leaving personal enmity etc out of the equation.

QBOddBird August 31 2006 12:19 PM EDT

I've never seen an OP go clear out an AFK room and then go on to brag about it in Carnage, myself.

As if there is anything to brag about. It isn't "Open Season" or hunting season or any other kind of game to us (well, me at least, but I'm positive the others as well) to go remove AFK rooms.

QBRanger August 31 2006 12:22 PM EDT

Hierarchy of cb2

Jon
Admins
Sub Admins
Chat Ops
All Others
AOD (J/K)

When a sub admin says to check rooms for inactivity, I do what s/he says. If you cannot do that, then perhaps you should not be an ops.

There is no "middle ground", this is a Jonocracy. Jon tells the sub/admins what to do and how to do it. They then tell us.

Do I agree 10-15 min is a reasonable time to wait to see if someone is active? Certainly. But according to those above me in the system we should check and if nobody is there, kick.

If I am too quick to kick people from idle rooms, then I am certain Jon or the admins will revoke my chat op status.

My gosh people, were talking a kick, not a kill, not a ban.

Take the kick and move on, start another room, pick your nose, go to the loo, make coffee, take a shower, play runescape-But get over it.

QBsutekh137 August 31 2006 1:44 PM EDT

"There is no 'middle ground'".

That's funny... Players have sure changed a lot of things around here. I wonder how they do that when there is no room for seeing both sides, no compromise, no tolerance for change...no "middle ground". Wherever there is even one person involved, there is middle ground, unless you are of the opinion that Jonathan is some sort of android.

There is always "middle ground". Next you'll be telling me "life's not fair!". Why didn't I think of that?

By the way, the fact that it is "just a kick" has absolutely nothing to do with the issue, in my opinion.

AdminG Beee August 31 2006 1:53 PM EDT

Chat ops have their /kick quota to fill. If they don't do that then Jon reduces their monthly salary accordingly. It's the easiest way to fill that quota by clearing out afk rooms.

AdminG Beee August 31 2006 1:56 PM EDT

ok, ok, stop the CMs!

Some people just miss the point I guess :)

I asked my girlfriend how much she loved me when we first met. She said, "Zero." So then I asked how much she loved me now. She said, "A thousand times that!"

Mem caught me yesterday while i was closing other windows i had open because it was about to storm.. Then my phone lines were messed up and finally got back on around 1:00 today. lol.

Genie August 31 2006 4:04 PM EDT

O.0 if i want to just go for a little smoke break from CB should i still go to carnage? :P

Mem August 31 2006 5:30 PM EDT

If you don't want to be kicked then I should say it'd be wise to do so, Genie.

Genie August 31 2006 6:45 PM EDT

alrighty, then i'd save some time for G_Beee since he's lazy. :D
