The whys and wherefores of Usernames. (in Off-topic)

QBJohnnywas December 1 2006 5:29 AM EST

Pinch punch first of the month. Good morning CB!

Ok, the question that is occupying my mind this morning is: How did you come by your Username? What's the thinking/history/meaning of your username?

Some are pretty obvious, but some are just impenetrable!

Johnnywas: The title of a Bob Marley song, as covered by a band from Northern Ireland called Stiff Little Fingers. Stiff Little Fingers were a punk band, late 70's, early 80's. They still perform and record these days, but it's more straight forward rock these days. They were a big influence on a lot of American hardcore/punk bands. Bands such as Husker Du, Nirvana and Green Day all cited them as an influence at one time or other. Check out songs such as At The Edge or Nobody's Hero to see how much of an influence.

That's me. What about you?

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] December 1 2006 5:46 AM EST

Punch, kick for being so quick. No return. ;)

Ages ago, when I was first introduced to the 'net, I wanted to join a Games forum (Gamefaqs! :P) and needed a screen name! In fear of axe murderers stealling all your cash (or impersonating you, could never be sure which) you coldn't dare use your real name.

Plus, you had to be 'cool'.

Racking my mind for an original idea, I came up blank. :P

A freind of mine was in the same plight, but settled on 'Horribleangel' from the translation of Silver Fox's killing move in Saviour of the Soul (A brilliant Hong Kong action movie, that we were quite enamoured with).

Both being roleplayers, at the time we were immersed in Cyber Punk 2020, and hooked on the genre.

He suggested GentlemanLoser, the name of a Pub in a William Gibson short story, I liked it, and it kind of fitted. :)

GL was born.

Later, I joined another RPG list, for SLA Industries (A great game, with flawed mechanics) and everyone thought i was trolling the existing Gent Loser of thier community.

Heh. So much for originality. :P

NotSuitablForChildren [Yeeeaahh.................] December 1 2006 7:07 AM EST

I got mine from the beginning of the Girls Gone Wild commercial. I thought it was fitting, and it just barely fits in the screenname field on CB. NSFY got pretty irked about being confused with me lol.

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] December 1 2006 7:44 AM EST

Mine was back about 4 years ago when I tried joining highschoolclub.com and everything else I wanted had been taken (I kept wanting names associated with wrestling).
I sat and kept trying different things due to not wanting the 'number at the end' approach then turned to my mate and asked him if he could think of something original, he said Zoglog, I asked him why and he just said "Well it was just something random that popped into my head and it's weird so it's probable that nobody uses it".
So there you go, my name has no real background to it, just made up by a couple of adolescent kids wanting a screenname.

AdminShade December 1 2006 7:46 AM EST

I have had my username for about 8 or 10 years now, back then I played a game which had thieves and elves and I thought of Shade Stalker then.

Later on he got married in a game and his wife was called Dawn and they had a son named Dusk.

But still I'm just Shade :)

AdminG Beee December 1 2006 8:19 AM EST

I came up with a guff and pointless combination of letters when signing up for what was probably only gonna be a crappy text based game that I'd never play for anymore than a night anyway...

Doh !

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] December 1 2006 8:29 AM EST

And now here you are stuck as an admin, that plan didn't work out very well ;)

TBH never enough gabber December 1 2006 8:57 AM EST

it's my dj name that simple

48Zach December 1 2006 9:00 AM EST

Zach is my name :D

Slashundhack [We Forge Our Own Stuff] December 1 2006 9:19 AM EST

Well by the time I got to the name part of signing up I figured thats what this game was and I had been on a German site just before so I changed the "and" to "und".I have another username for most other sites.By the way we can thank Stumble for sending me here and I've thought maybe if someone made a CB button (as an add on) and had F.F. give it out we might get a few more people playing.

Kong Ming December 1 2006 9:20 AM EST

Kong Ming aka Zhuge Liang:

Zhuge Liang's name is synonymous with wisdom in Chinese. He was believed to be the inventor of the landmine and a mysterious automatic transportation device (initially used for grain described as a "wooden ox and floating horse", which is sometimes identified with the wheelbarrow. Although he is often credited with the invention of the repeating crossbow which is named after him, called Zhuge Nu, i.e. Zhuge Crossbow, this type of semi-automatic crossbow is actually an improved version of a model that first appeared during the Warring States Period (though there is debate whether the original warring states bow was semi-automatic, or rather shot multiple bolts at once). Nevertheless, Zhuge's version could shoot further and faster. He is also credited for constructing the mysterious Stone Sentinel Maze, an array of stone piles that is said to produce supernatural phenomenon, located near Baidicheng. An early type of hot air balloon used for military signalling called the Kongming lantern is also named after him. Zhuge Liang's reputation for being intelligent is also emphasised in his portrayal in video games. Reflecting his status as the most highly regarded strategist.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] December 1 2006 9:37 AM EST

TBH, why did you choose that as you DJ name?

QBsutekh137 December 1 2006 9:49 AM EST

Check out the link under my user page. It explains Sutekh pretty well. Don't be fooled by Heather, Sutekh will be getting his site back soon... *smile*

QBsutekh137 December 1 2006 9:50 AM EST

Oh, and 137 is the fine-structure constant. Google "137" for more than enough explanation.

chuck1234 December 1 2006 9:56 AM EST

I came up with a guff and pointless combination of letters when signing up for what was probably only gonna be a crappy text based game that I'd never play for anymore than a night anyway...

Doh !

--G Beee, 8:19 AM EST

Hmmm, great minds do think alike, well almost....ditto as above with me; the only difference being I thought, does it really matter, i'm not going to be around much here anyways, so i signed in my real name and added numbers, coz most places my name being quite common is always taken.

QBBarzooMonkey December 1 2006 10:33 AM EST

I just like to come up with nonsense user names that I think no one sane could ever have thought up before, like JuJuLizard or BarzooMonkey...

They always seem to involve animals, for some reason...

:P

BootyGod December 1 2006 10:45 AM EST

WOOT. This may take awhile. I will mark the ones that are particularly of interest to me.

Godwolf:

Well, this is my most famous name. It was created for a good few reasons. Firstly, it's relatively rare (demonstrates by the fact I can join a site with hundreds of thousands and its still open). Second, I love wolves. Really, I love them. And the God part is kinda duh. I mean, if I love wolves that much then why not be the God of them? I have gotten in quite a bit in trouble with this name, but I still love it!

Any name with Bane in it: Great word, bane. Good meaning to. I just it quite a bit, and anything else with it just flows with what I was thinking at the time.

WolfCorpse, WolfSoul: Once again with my spiritual/wolf side. WolfCorpse is just a part of the cycle of life. I liked them both.

Psywolf: Do I really need to explain?

Atheist Knight: Ahhh, this name really was a bit of nostalgia for me. I used to play a game called AmericanWarlords. Text based strategy game. Completely owned that game (seriously, I broke it) and the Atheist Knights was the clan that led it. I went back to it to honor my time on the top of a game.

dramallama: First of all, who thought I would leave it out? No, its a name like any other. Granted, I didn't choose this name. Also, if some players hadn't abused it so much I wouldn't have disliked it so much. But there you go.

Dead: Umm... accidentally hit enter.

QBOddBird December 1 2006 10:47 AM EST

Mine came from the word 'oddball' (because I am kind of odd! or is that just my creativity showing?) and I adapted this for another game in which 'oddball' was taken, and created the name Oddbird. I had already made an account on CB1, and that was gone, so I created the account 'Oracle' just to see if I could make a CB2 account....and I could. I then changed it to Oddbird, and it's been changed to many different things since then.

For now, it is OBBQ, a compromise between 'OB', my nickname on here, and 'BBQ', my favorite kind of sandwich!

matteo48 December 1 2006 11:04 AM EST

My name is Matt, but i wanna be called Matteo, and i live at number 48.

QBJohn Birk [Black Cheetah Bazaar] December 1 2006 12:22 PM EST

Sefton Electrius Lightfoot was my 2nd Edition Dungeons and Dragons wood elf fighter thief I started in 1988 and played through to about 1995 when we finally retired the whole group and started new characters. Sefton had the advantage of incedible starting rolls. If you know Dungeons and Dragons, you start out with rolling to generate random numbers between 3-18. I rolled two 18's and a 17, then added in a roll of 99 out of 100 for his Strength score. This made him head and shoulders more powerful than the fighter stength wise and with a 19 Dex he was a very good thief as well.

Suffice to say he was tough. And like everyone looking for an online alias, you want something unique to you, and something you will not forget. Sefton, was the perfect fit for me, and I have used it pretty much entirely my whole online career (or at least since 1988)

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] December 1 2006 12:46 PM EST

When I joined cb1, I was still a heavy counter-strike player, so joined with the name
Say it in Slugs (an Entombed song) and the rather quickly became LVL 1 Human Novice because I was a dork. That was quickly replaced with a much simpler title.
And other than my brief stint impersonating the old |D|I|G|I|T|A|L| logo it's been the same ever since. I think I stick with novice despite there being a now almost popular band from this same area (so close I know the girl all the songs are about is my best friends little sister) with the same name is that I like the Zen idea of each and every moment being a new one, and that we are ever a novice, no matter how grizzled and old.

Adminedyit [Superheros] December 1 2006 1:35 PM EST

edyit is a play on words and an old (unwanted) nick name. Ed being my name and idiot being what I call most people that annoy me to no end. I started saying it so much that it started to annoy them to no end and was in turn called ediot. That sobriquet has stuck since grade school even my wife calls me it every now and then. So now I use it as my online name. Chances are that if you see edyit on any other site it's me.

Miandrital December 1 2006 1:41 PM EST

Miandrital was originally a terrible spelling for Neanderthal. (stop laughing.) It really has no meaning at all, but is a great username, since I know that I can use it on any website, save for those which I am already registered.
I started using it when I first arrived here at CB, and it has become my online name ever since.

RedWolf December 1 2006 2:12 PM EST

As long as OpVines does not interrupt, I will continue.

RedWolf is named after my favorite character from Final Fantasy VII, one of the best Final Fantasy games ever made.

So far, he is able to attack all monsters on the battle field doing 9999 damage, or attack one monster four times doing 9999 each time. His time gauge takes less than a second to fill up again, which lets me attack over and over doing ridiculous amounts of damage muahaha :-P Not only that, but each attack inflicts confusion, silence, poison, sleep, frog, and small on the monster, if they survive. He's also immune to sleep, poison, sadness, fury, confusion, silence, frog, small, snow-numb, petrify, death-sentence, berserk, paralyze, and darkness. If by some unfortunate even he DOES happen to die, he just immediately revives himself again and continues fighting.

Before you ask why, I have already beat Ruby and Emerald weapons, and killed Sephiroth countless times (once I did it in 46 seconds, but that was with the whole party fighting. With just Red, it took a little over a minute.) Thus there is no challenge left for me in the game, and I have resorted to simply making Red even more invincible. That or setting new course records on the snowboard game (56.7 seconds on the easy course)

I had always thought the character Red XIII was a wolf, until OpVines recently told me it was actually a lion. But meh. He still looks like a wolf to me :-P

AdminQBVerifex December 1 2006 2:23 PM EST

I wish I had a better excuse for my current user name, but honestly, I don't. I came up with it many years ago when I needed something more pronounceable then "Eieken" as many people had difficulty pronouncing. In the end it is just a word I came up with. I am weird like that. I like unique names and I will probably pick another one in a couple more years. Or something.

Hyrule Castle [Defy] December 1 2006 4:49 PM EST

its the main castle in pretty much any zelda game...

Thraklight Resonance December 1 2006 6:01 PM EST

A thrak is the sound of 117 guitar players all hitting the same chord at approximately the same time. A thrakattack could be the graceful sound of 117 virtuoso guitar players playing note for note progressions or the painful sound of 117 All-American Reject tribute guitarists trying to do the same thing.

I remember G Beee using the name over on battlefaeries when I was the Earl of Happy, derived from my normal on-line nickname Happy the Man.

th00p December 1 2006 6:34 PM EST

th00p is short for th00permann, my old name + AIM name, which is pretty much making fun of this kid at my school who talkth with a lithp all the time and I cracked up so hard when he said 'thooperman' that I just had to use it... th00p is pretty much my only online name, the other one I had for RS was Mystermom, which surprisingly 90% of the people don't understand...

Bok [brimstone killers] December 1 2006 7:18 PM EST

mine came from wanting the name bob but it was already taken and i didnt want any numbers in it so i randomly hit a key after bo and it came out to be bok so thats my name

kx5 [The Lotus Cross] December 1 2006 8:12 PM EST

Random letters.

I composed a few piano works a while ago(i still do, but rarely) and the titles were "cool" combinations of letters and numbers, so i used that.

[P]Mitt December 1 2006 8:19 PM EST

Mitt

I don't know how I came up from this name, but I used to be called "iklfis". Yeah I'm not sure how I came about that name either. But "Mitt" seemed a simple, nice name, that people could relate to as warm and nice.

Darkwalker [Jago] December 1 2006 8:37 PM EST

Darkwalker....

the hero from a futuristic book regarding utopia.... his name is he who walks in the dark.... hence the shorten name... I use this for all my email nicks/address....

{CB1}Lukeyman December 1 2006 8:39 PM EST

Mine's easy, Lukeman's my last name, and i just put a y in there :p

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] December 1 2006 11:47 PM EST

For about a year or so The Vines were my favorite band (only second to Muse now) and the term "OpVines" came from a project put together by members of The Vines' message boards. I liked the way it looked and sounded so I stole it. Although to my dismay it seems there's at least a few other people who use "OpVines" as an alias because it's taken in a few places, the most disappointing being AIM.

Tylan December 2 2006 12:33 AM EST

Tylan- Main character in a story i wrote several years ago, and the name stuck throughout the years....my main name in over 20 different rpg accounts i keep active when someone hasn't alrdy managed to take it.

Unappreciated Misnomer December 2 2006 12:41 AM EST

drop precious cargo - AKA: DPC, from clone high

doop - AKA: Democratic Order Of Planets, from Futurama

and i never gave it much thought as to why, but thought they were funny, not much else goes into choosing a username for myself

Hyrule Castle [Defy] December 2 2006 12:44 AM EST

I was thinking of changing my name to Faytal as i am obsessed with star ocean 3. And have been using the name Faytal for about a year and a half now.... but Hyrule_Castle is a classic from 3-4 years ago. And who doesn't like Zelda?

GnuUzir December 2 2006 12:56 AM EST

Just a bad pun...

/me walks off into the sunset...

Kliktu December 2 2006 3:21 AM EST

Kliktu: A name I made to sound tough and sharp by using several hard consonants. It took me about 30 min. to create.
I tacked on _the_Destroyer on the first forum I ever attended about 3 years ago called Ki-Teachings. I don't practice what they teach any more, if you even care to find out what it is that they taught, rofl.
Kliktu_the_Destroyer quickly evolved into my evil, angry persona on that forum and I made many enemies and a few allies that actually liked my style ^.^;
My antics included page long flames, threads in which I argued with my alternate persona The_New_Kliktu and threw random objects at him and sometimes blasted him with a pokemon >.>, spreading apocalyptic rumors to the gulible saps on that site, and generally making a bad name for myself. My friends in real life loved Kliktu so much that they still call me that to this day.
I have changed my ways but I still kinda like my infamacy so I keep that name in hopes that one of those guys will see me and relive the horror that was Kliktu_the_Destroyer!!! WAHAHAHAHAH!!! Enough! G_Beee changed my 1st Char.'s name to BAr STewARD because it wasn't PG, (just pick out the capitals and you'll find my original name) and I changed it to Humble_Paladin, my 'good' persona on that forum. Professor, Humble_Paladin's minion, was a 'tough-teacher' type persona on that forum...
The name Kliktu is never taken on any site or game that I log on to play, so its unique ^.^ I've mellowed out quite a bit since those days, so don't be fooled by my past reputation (that I maybe shouldn't have let known, but oh well) And I hope you enjoyed my presentation of "The History of Kliktu" That will be all from me now! See you on the battlefield!!

mastinox December 2 2006 3:54 AM EST

Mastinox; a highly toxic chemical used in aviation, used as a corrosion preventative compound.

Xenko December 2 2006 10:36 AM EST

Kultur

A username I started using at least a decade ago when I was playing a MUD through Telnet (those were the days). I flipped through the dictionary looking for a somewhat obscure word that could be used as a name. My name IRL starts with a K, so I was looking in that section of the dictionary. It basically means culture in German (and Russian as well I am told), and it can also specifically refer to "German culture and civilization as idealized by the exponents of German imperialism during the Hohenzollern and Nazi regimes." I just thought the word sounded cool.

Xenko (my character's name on CB) is just a random name I made up, and it is now the main moniker I use online. My only problem with it is that it is only 5 letters long, thus I can't make the e-mail addy Xenko@gmail.com because it needs to be 6 characters minimum. Darn you Google!!

Wasp December 2 2006 12:22 PM EST

Wasp isn't my usual alias but I made up a different one for CB. At the time of signing up my girlfriend was reading a book (which was quite good, in a strange way) called "The Wasp Factory" by Iain Banks. The book was by the computer when I signed up, at her house. So there you have it. Besides... Wasps are cool!

AdminG Beee December 2 2006 12:27 PM EST

Beees are better ;)

Wasp December 2 2006 12:32 PM EST

Bees are rubbish. They sting you and die!? I mean think about it. They want to protect themselves from danger... so they sting you... and die anyway. Woooo. So smart :P

Flamey December 2 2006 5:10 PM EST

Well, y'see, I was playing Perfect Dark (N64) with my brother and his friends, they had nicknames, so, I wanted one. I was 8 at the time. I thought red (being my favourite colour) and fire is red, to turn fire into a noun, Flamey! it originally came out as Flamy, but as you can see that doesn't look, nor sound as good :P

Gender Bender December 2 2006 6:00 PM EST

Was jumping around trying to find a good online game as I was watching an episode of Futurama (back in the CB1, no BA, FoD era!), found it funny so hung on to it.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] December 2 2006 7:05 PM EST

Ian Banks rocks! :D

Sukotto [lookingglas] December 2 2006 10:23 PM EST

Sukotto is my wife's nickname for me. It's similar to my RL name.

AvoidCXT December 6 2006 3:52 PM EST

Ages ago, my screen name was TripitakaMan for anything that I joined. Tripitaka was just a cool word that I invented. Even though I was only 13 at the time I started using I was still the manliest man ever, so I had to express that in my user name.

A few years before I joined CB1, I learned a thing or two about Tripitaka, and therefore needed a new screen name.

I opened one of my favorite books and randomly pointed to a word. That word was "shemale," so I tried again. The next word was "diarrhea," so I got a different book. So it was decided that my new screenname would be "Avoid" The first site I tried the new name on had an eight-character minimum, so my three favorite letters were added to the end of it.

So why is it still my screename for the past several years? Inertia.
This thread is closed to new posts. However, you are welcome to reference it from a new thread; link this with the html The whys and wherefores of Usernames.
