Best anime series you've seen? (in Off-topic)

Goodfish November 5 2008 11:07 PM EST

So I have Netflix and share it with two friends, and the only things we enjoy communally is anime. We've gone through Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Chobits, and Speed Grapher. We also, strangely, enjoyed Firefly (no real surprise there, I guess) and Eureka (which is a really great show). Other movies we've seen (and enjoyed) include Appleseed, Karas: The Prophecy, Castle in the Sky, Spriggan, Spirited Away, and Steamboy. We did NOT like Rurouni Kenshin (how anybody enjoys that series is beyond any of us).

We're currently watching Planetes and Outlaw Star and plan on watching Parallel Dual and Wolf's Rain.

My question is, if you've enjoyed any of these animes (besides Rurouni Kenshin, which sucked horrendously), let me know what other anime series are worth getting in to.

three4thsforsaken November 5 2008 11:17 PM EST

I would tell you but I can't seem to get spellcheck to like me. I can't use HTML without Fex's script! (where did it go?)

PearsonTritonRaveshaw November 5 2008 11:18 PM EST

Old school animae: Dragonball and the gundam wing series I really enjoyed. They are made for kids and teens and all, but uhh, it's still good and all.

DoS November 5 2008 11:18 PM EST

I enjoyed watching the InuYasha series when I watched it. I haven't seen the movies though... only anime I have watched.

Mesoshort November 5 2008 11:18 PM EST

Ranma 1/2 of course.

Mesoshort November 5 2008 11:19 PM EST

Oooo and Gravitation. That was a good one too. Sorry for the spam, it just occurred to me.

Goodfish November 5 2008 11:21 PM EST

I definitely loved old-school Dragonball, and watched (almost) the full series, but after that I thought it sucked. Gundam never really struck me, but I haven't seen much of it. Generally the stuff that CN used to show is not really my style, as it's much too Americanized.

InuYasha is much the same way, although I suppose I haven't seen enough of it to really give it a fair analysis. But really, a dude with cat ears?

Meso, I'll have to check those out.

PearsonTritonRaveshaw November 5 2008 11:23 PM EST

I think there are three different gundam series. It was either gundam wing or mobile suit gundam that I liked. There was one where they sit in the cockpit of the gundams, and one where they wear this ridiculous suit and act out what they do inside a little ball thing and that's how they fight. I liked the cockpit one. Anyways.... =P

Robotech

Vaynard [Fees Dirt Cheap] November 5 2008 11:40 PM EST

A couple of my favorites, that you did not mention, are Trigun and FLCL. Also I've just started getting into Gurren Laggen on tv, and would highly recommend it. Kind of strange and a childish look to it at times(very strange looking characters lol), yet incredible battles and an intriguing story.

Oh yeah, can't forget Full Metal Alchemist! Or Elfen Lied (I think that's how it's spelled). And Scrapped Princess struck me as a great show.

That's all for now.

Goodfish November 5 2008 11:42 PM EST

I haven't seen Trigun but will have to give it a look. I've seen FLCL like five times, and agree that it's awesome.

The rest I'll check up on. :D

MonkeyMandate [Wasting Time] November 5 2008 11:54 PM EST

i have to say the gundam series in general are pretty good. gurren lagan is a must see. another good movie to see is nausica: valley of the wind. some other ones that I've seen that were good were,
-code geass
-fate stay night => one of the best ones I've ever seen
-heroic age
-last exile
-and probably my favorite, shakugan no shana.

Rawr November 5 2008 11:56 PM EST

Full Metal Alchemist

Suqataqus November 6 2008 1:00 AM EST

I second the post for Ranma 1/2. Obviously start with Season 1, but if you're not sure after a few, stick with it til you see Season 2+, which is where the show really got good.

SoulFire November 6 2008 1:10 AM EST

If you're into any sports anime I would recommend Major, Hungry Heart Wild Striker, and Prince of Tennis.

Fate November 6 2008 1:56 AM EST

evangelion (classic), code geass (first season is better then the second so far), fate stay night (awesome twist)

Sickone November 6 2008 5:59 AM EST

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

I just can't explain what's awesome about it, you have to watch it to see for yourself... and you have to watch it exactly in sequence, from the first to the last episode, without skipping to "the middle" because then it makes absolutely no sense at all. For instance, the first two expisodes are almost exclusively introductory but absolutely necessary for your later enjoyment.

Sailor Moon.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] November 6 2008 6:47 AM EST

Series or Movies?

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (1&2)
Abanabashi Magical Shopping Arcade
Witchblade
Guyver: Bioboosted Armour

Movies;
Streetfighter
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Final Fantasy: Advent Children
Ninja Scroll

And many more I've forgotten! ;)

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] November 6 2008 6:48 AM EST

"Full Metal Alchemist"

Yeah! Seconded. ;)

MonkeyMandate [Wasting Time] November 6 2008 7:48 AM EST

i agree full metal alchemist was alright, but it wasn't that great. i mean the first half of the show was great, but then they decided to make their own story which greatly differs from the manga, which was disappointing in itself. the direction they took with the ending just seemed completely weird.

though overall not a bad watch

Goodfish November 6 2008 9:28 PM EST

I refuse to watch Sailor Moon, I am not a nine-year-old girl nor am I a teenage boy who "can't get any".

:P

Ariac November 6 2008 10:07 PM EST

No offense, but that mentality would make you like that show. It's better than people say. And if you liked Firefly try buffy? It's not bad at all.

kevlar November 6 2008 10:18 PM EST

I am not a nine-year-old girl nor am I a teenage boy who "can't get any".

So how old are you then?

Rawr November 6 2008 10:23 PM EST

I haven't seen much of it but I've received a few recommendations from my friends for Blood +

Ariac November 6 2008 10:34 PM EST

Excel Saga.
Also, there's Alien Nine which is only a few episodes long and done by the same guys who did Excel Saga. It's probably one of the best anime I've ever seen. (IMO)

Stephen Young November 6 2008 10:54 PM EST

Just recently started watching Utawarerumono on Netflix Instant Play. So far, I've got to give it a big thumbs up, though it does seem to take a long time to advance the story. From Netflix:

This anime series follows the otherworldly adventures of Hakuoro, a permanently masked man who awakes in a village with no memory of who he is. As he wanders the town, he learns that its strange-looking inhabitants have a unique connection to nature; hence, their tails and long, pointy ears. Now, on a mission to reconstruct his lost memory and solve the mystery of the mask, Hakuoro joins with the villagers to protect their town and way of life.

Rawr November 6 2008 11:02 PM EST

I'm sure this is mentioned somewhere....
Naruto!

MonkeyMandate [Wasting Time] November 6 2008 11:53 PM EST

NARUTO IS EVIL
(had to said in caps)

Optimus(Prime) November 6 2008 11:59 PM EST

there is Air gear

Stephen Young November 7 2008 12:12 AM EST

My girlfriend's 10 year old nephew says Air Gear is quote: "Retarded"

Soul Eater November 7 2008 1:08 AM EST

It's a toss up between Eureka Seven, Code Geass and Death Note, Naruto and Bleach. But if I had to pick a single favorite it would have to Eureka Seven. With Code Geass coming in at a close second.

Rawr November 7 2008 1:11 AM EST

Oh yeahhh, Bleach is good. Death Note is good until episode 25 or 30..

Eliteofdelete [Battle Royale] November 7 2008 1:18 AM EST

Air gear wasn't retarded...just a little slow =) If you want retarded then watch the Serial Experiments of Lain Anyways here is a list I have seen from favorite to least favorite. Note: Ones that I found too stupid to continue watching like Serial Experiments of Lain are not included. Full Metal Alchemist Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Elfen Lied Hellsing Ouran High School Host Club Karin Hellsing OVA Air Gear Death note Chocotto Sister Magicano

[Beo]AggroHippie November 7 2008 1:47 AM EST

okay, time to impose my opinion once again in the off-topic forums!

Death Note - really cool, didnt end as I would have expected, dragged after a certain key moment.

Fullmetal Alchemist - Interesting concept, addicting.

Last Exile - shiny and entertaining, story is a little cliche at points, but still definitely worth a watch.

Princess Mononoke - Favorite movie still. great story, realistic characterizations and good pacing for the most part. Nausicaa: valley of the wind is older and along the same lines of a conflict between nature and mankind.

Helsing - quite entertaining.

Elfen Lied - interesting story, uses the 'people with power are for the most part wretched' plot basis.

Gunslinger Girls - amusing. would recommend it.

Thats all I can think of for now...

Nehemiah November 7 2008 3:18 AM EST

i will put a vote in for Rurouni Kenshin, its an excellent show, for the other people that havent seen it, action and a cool story line that keeps you coming back for more!!!

other than that another plug for DBZ original / cell / buu series, after that GT was ok but the music really went south ...

God Bless you!

Jesus Loves you!

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] November 7 2008 3:19 AM EST

For a bit of Fan Service, try Battle Vixens.

I also enjoyed Shadow Skill.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] November 7 2008 3:19 AM EST

Goodfish November 7 2008 5:19 PM EST

>>No offense, but that mentality would make you like that show. It's better than people say. And if you liked Firefly try buffy? It's not bad at all.

I've heard good things about Buffy and I occasionally watch it online. Meh... sometimes it's good, sometimes it sucks.

And I mean it- I will never watch Sailor Moon. It is not better than people say. ;)

>>I am not a nine-year-old girl nor am I a teenage boy who "can't get any".
So how old are you then?

Well, I'm either a male, between 0 and 12 or over 19, years old or I am a female of the same age range, with the exception of being nine. That answer your question? ;D

>>DBZ

Already said I won't watch it, I absolutely hated (most of) it.

>>Hellsing! (is awesome, bloody and filled with beautiful music. especially the main theme.)

I've seen it. It's very interesting, animation-wise, but I'm not sure I like their idea of "action". I thought it was decent, though.

>>I haven't seen much of it but I've received a few recommendations from my friends for Blood +

Currently watching it. ;) I like it, although it's a bit.... well, I prefer "realistic" anime. I believe I'm on disc 3.

>>Excel Saga.
Also, there's Alien Nine which is only a few episodes long and done by the same guys who did Excel Saga. It's probably one of the best anime I've ever seen. (IMO)

I'll have to watch these, then, assuming they interest me. ;)

Naruto and Bleach both suck and I don't understand why they have such a following. I like more "mature" anime. Boob jokes are only funny for about ten seconds. Heh.

And please stop recommending "fanboi" anime. I won't watch it, because most of it is junk. This includes FMA, DBZ, Sailor Moon, Bleach, Naruto, Inuyasha, and any other crap that has ever aired on CN/Toonami. Midnight Run was occasionally good, though...

I much prefer "grittier" anime. And anything with Space Pirates always gets me. :D

I'll be looking into the other recommendations, and thank you very much for them! :)

BadFish November 7 2008 5:40 PM EST

What about that show we used to watch... Outlaw Star? It has space pirates.

Lady Die November 7 2008 5:55 PM EST

Yes! Hellsing and Deathnote.

God Of Fire November 7 2008 5:56 PM EST

I think Yu Yu Hakusho is decent

Goodfish November 7 2008 5:58 PM EST

Actually Badfish I'm renting Outlaw Star at the moment. It's in my first post. You obviously didn't read it. ;D
