Not enough mid ranged stuff? (in General)

Brakke Bres [Ow man] January 22 2009 7:24 AM EST

Currently in CB we have two degradations in armor and weapons.

We have Rare and non-Rare.
The problem in Weapons department isn't that high, plenty of midranged weapons. But nothing special

Jon recently (well a few months ago) introduced some new mid ranged items. The elven stiletto (with VB effect), the gloves of mercy and the Menelvegorian Cape.

All three excellent cheap mid ranged weapons and armor.
But that was it. We don't have any more mid ranged items.

The rares aren't really rare anymore, just take a look at items overview. The "rarest" body armor isn't the TSA or EH but the Steel Cuiras. Which is clearly rubbish...

We have a lot of none rares with no real practical use. Some of the low end armor and weapons are nice (leather armors, lochs, katana's) but no real use.
And with current encumbrance, big upgraded items won't fit on small n*b's. This new mid ranged item group would fit perfectly between low end crap and high upgraded items.

So I ask the community should CB introduce a few items that have reduced effects of current rares? Or new items with new effects that aren't really useful high up, but work great up to 1.5mil mpr?

Why not?

An example of a reduced version of the corn; cheaper to upgrade but also less effect on it. Only +1% or .5% to ED and EO? Call it the Crown or something.

Make three classes of items, perhaps only useable at certain MPR levels.

AdminShade January 22 2009 9:22 AM EST

There never was much of a mid range to begin with..

Brakke Bres [Ow man] January 22 2009 9:47 AM EST

Thats what I'm saying.

But the question is; do we need more useful mid ranged items?

QBJohnnywas January 22 2009 9:57 AM EST

We only need more mid ranged items if you make it so you can't use the higher end items.

I mean would you seriously use an Exec if you could use an BoNE or a Morg? I wouldn't...

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 22 2009 10:07 AM EST

i think the only way to have useful mid-range items is to be able to convert them, with a cost, to high end items without losing any of the invested net worth. until that can happen, you are much better off saving until you can purchase a high level item.

does the salvage yard work for the elven stiletto to high end weapon? i also think armor would need to be added to the salvage yard. this would allow users to purchase a middy, start updating and investing in it and then when they can get a rare or affford it they can convert it over without losing any of their investment.

Brakke Bres [Ow man] January 22 2009 10:21 AM EST

Im all for a blacksmith that can do the same for armor as for weapons and tattoo's

Buy a piece you want to convert in. Then give the same NW, but different stats.

As long as mid ranged items don't get to expensive

QBRanger January 22 2009 10:34 AM EST

Back in the days of CB1, when there was no NUB, new players could not get rares as easy as now.

The lower end items actually mattered and were used.

It took me 2 months to get my first rare-an exec sword. And I was damm happy to finally get a rare.

However, now, NUB's have to play for a week to get basically any rare they want. NUB's after 2 months have their entire character stocked with all the rares the possibly need, with the possible exception of a very high NW weapon.

There is no need for mid level rares IMO. Just look at the new elven dagger. You cannot find people who will pay even NW for them most of the time.

The current system does not reward people for using mid/lower level items.

Unless CB is radically changed, this idea is not very viable, IMO of course.

Brakke Bres [Ow man] January 22 2009 11:44 AM EST

You mean the rares aren't really rare anymore? Yeah I knowm, spawn rates are way too high for such small amount of active players...

three4thsforsaken January 22 2009 11:48 AM EST

There are low rares that anyone can afford, like the MC...

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] January 22 2009 11:52 AM EST

Unless the game changes so that smaller base items have the cheapest upgrades, then you'll never need anything other than the 'Best in Slot' (like various top end body armours that all provide a different function, while remaining top end), and the temporary starter base items to get you off the ground.

Everything else is a waste of investment.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] January 22 2009 11:53 AM EST

"There are low rares that anyone can afford, like the MC..."

Because they, like Gloves of Mercy, are rubbish.

Sickone January 22 2009 12:04 PM EST

Rares weren't rare at all when I started more than a year ago.
All the "midrange" stuff is a joke, almost exclusively used by tournament characters and people who just don't know better yet.
The lowend stuff... not even worth mentioning.
Also, don't get me started on tattoos. What the hell is with "lesser" tattoos, why do they even exist ?

Eh... it is like it is, it kind-of-sort-of works, there's no "admin time" to make any changes even if there was a will to do it, which I doubt exists... so the whole subject is moot :(

QBRanger January 22 2009 1:52 PM EST

Wow,

Something the entire community agrees with.

Anything but the top rares for each slot, for a given character type are garbage.

Nothing else likely needs to be stated unless CB2 is radically changed.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] January 22 2009 4:02 PM EST

Unless you're playing a mage, you will need a Whip/Dagger/Sling to start a new character off with.

Other than that, I wholey agree with Ranger. ;)

Brakke Bres [Ow man] January 22 2009 4:07 PM EST

Yeah if something like midranged stuff would introduced into CB it would be in CB3, and thats not going to happen any time soon...

To bad, I really liked the idea to have a mid solution before you buy really high end stuff. Even with the blacksmith that could turn mid range into high range stuff for a price. :(

Back on the subject or rares? Should those rates be dropped or is it too late and just continue?

Wizard'sFirstRule January 22 2009 10:52 PM EST

turning mid-range item into rare seems like a joke to me. and I agree with that "best in slot" investment plan are working too well.

I like to see the $$ bonus in NUB taken out, and replaced with blacksmith credits, which gives 100% for upgrading noob weapons (and can't be disenchanted co-incidentally), 75% for mid-range, and 50% for top weapons (but can't be used on armor?). That way rares might actually be rare while new players can easily upgrade their items to keep up with the MPR growth.

Jersey January 22 2009 11:18 PM EST

i agree with ranger, no one stays at a mid lvl for long, i mean i have been playing since November, its been 2 months and 2 day, i have a +20 BoM, +18 EBs, HoC, named BGs, AoM, ToA, and a x3900 named ELB, i don't see a point in buying a mid range/mid rare weapon, when i can use rentals for a week to a month and then buy good gear, plus there are a lot of people who have rares just sitting around since they cant use them on their NCB that they can loan, rent, sell to NUBs
